It’s Wednesday, February 17th, 2016…and here’s The Gouge!

First up, courtesy of Balls Cotton and The Patriot Post, John Bastiat bids a true red-white-and-blue American a final good bye:

Justice Antonio Scalia — Farewell Nino

2016-02-15-adb17632_large

“Our Republic has lost one of its most articulate defenders of Liberty and Rule of Law: Justice Antonio Scalia.

The best way to pay proper tribute to Justice Scalia is by citing some of his public remarks and opinions from the bench (cases are noted below) in affirmation and defense of our Constitution:

If you think aficionados of a ‘living constitution’ want to bring you flexibility, think again. …If we’re picking people to draw out of their own conscience and experience a ‘new’ Constitution, we should not look principally for good lawyers. We should look to people who agree with us. When we are in that mode, you realize we have rendered the Constitution useless. (2005)

The argument of flexibility goes something like this: The Constitution is over 200 years old and societies change. It has to change with society, like a living organism, or it will become brittle and break. But you would have to be an idiot to believe that. The Constitution is not a living organism, it is a legal document. It says some things and doesn’t say other things. (2006)

Persuade your fellow citizens it’s a good idea and pass a law. That’s what democracy is all about. It’s not about nine superannuated judges who have been there too long imposing these demands on society. (2011)

Under all the usual rules of interpretation, in short, the Government should lose this case. But normal rules of interpretation seem always to yield to the overriding principle of the present Court: The Affordable Care Act must be savedAnd the cases will publish forever the discouraging truth that the Supreme Court of the United States favors some laws over others, and is prepared to do whatever it takes to uphold and assist its favorites. I dissent. (King v. Burwell, 2014)…”

To which we can only add a hearty “AMEN“!!!

Meanwhile, forget the last-gasp efforts of a lame-duck President; were it not for our abiding faith in the sovereignty of an Almighty God, the fact the fate of the Founding Fathers’ Republic, Lincoln’s government of the people, for the people and by the people, might well rest in the hands of these two…

Donald-Trump-and-Mitch-McConnell

…would certainly cause sleep to escape us!

In a related item, as James Taranto details, the inconvenient truth behind the origin of the term “borking” appears to have eluded the erudite editors of The Old Grey Nag:

Bork to the Future

Half a century of Supreme Court rancor.

BN-MP746_botwt0_J_20160216095831

Too bad Teddy Kennedy and the rest of the hypocritical character assassins in the Senate weren’t also under oath!

“Remember Robert Bork? If you do, you’re not a member of the New York Times editorial board. Justice Antonin Scalia’s death over the weekend at 79 prompted the Times’s editors to drop Bork (who died in 2012) down the memory hole:

When Antonin Scalia was named by President Ronald Reagan to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court in 1986, the Senate considered the nomination for 85 days, then voted to confirm him. The tally was 98-0.

That unanimity was by no means a measure of widespread agreement with Justice Scalia’s judicial philosophy. Rather it was the Senate’s customary acknowledgment—at least until recentlythat the president had fulfilled his constitutional duty and selected a clearly qualified person for the post.

Thirty years later, and within hours of the news that Justice Scalia had died, Senate Republicans, led by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, rejected that practice outright…”

For those tempted to grant The Times‘ obviously-addled editors the benefit of the doubt…after all, 1987 was a ways back, and the 60’s did likely put a significant strain on their brains…Chucky Schumer’s 2007 opus offers convincing evidence the omission was deliberate deception…

…squarely aimed at the absence of even the remotest knowledge of history at the heart of every single Dimocratic voting bloc.

Liberals: the truth can’t set them free, because the truth simply ain’t in ’em!

Since we’re on the subject of an absence of truth, though not remotely on the scale practice by Progressives, as Breitbart reports, where Ted Cruz smelled smoke there was indeed fire:

Interview Transcript Proves Rubio Promised Hispanics en Español He’d Keep Executive Amnesty in Place

517a2650-1d10-0133-76af-0aecee5a8273

“…Indeed, video footage of Sen. Rubio confirms Cruz’s assertion. In an April Spanish-language interview, Rubio told Univision’s Jorge Ramos: I wouldn’t undo it [DACA] immediately.” Rubio elaborated in English, telling Ramos: “I don’t think we can immediately revoke that [DACA]I’m not calling for it to be revoked tomorrow, or this week, or right away.”

So when, inquiring minds want to know, might the junior Senator from Florida see fit as President to rescind The Great Divider’s the Constitutionally-questionable act of amnesty?

“…Indeed, in both Spanish and English language interviews, Rubio said that he would not “immediately” rescind Obama’s unconstitutional 2012 executive amnesty. Rubio even said that his “ideal” plan would be to leave Obama’s unconstitutional amnesty in place until Rubio’s long-sought after legislative amnesty can replace it– i.e. Rubio has the same position on DREAMer amnesty as does President Obama.

In a manner of speaking, though not entirely true, yes, he does; which, absent some major course correction, doesn’t bode well for his chances in Cleveland.

Next up, as David French notes at NRO

Donald Trump Is No Revolutionary, He’s Just a Democrat

trump_00_thumb

“Saturday’s GOP debate finally clarified the Donald Trump phenomenon. After months of dominating the polls and millions of words of analysis, the grueling slog of the primary race is finally bringing the facts into sharp relief. Donald Trump isn’t a revolutionary. He’s not a conservative. He’s not even a populist. He’s a Democrat.

Regarding the Iraq War, Trump made it quite plain that he believes the fever-swamp “Bush lied, people died” narrative of the radical Left. The transcript could not be more clear.

Regarding the horror of 9/11, only a committed leftist would pin the undeniable failure of America’s security apparatus on George Bush and George Bush only, but that’s what Trump did.

…When the conversation turned to Planned Parenthood, incredibly he had this to say:

…Trump: Excuse me. Excuse me, there are wonderful things having to do with women’s health.

These are standard Democratic talking points, intentionally designed to obfuscate the fact that when you pump hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars into a business, you help the entire businessnot just the portion funded. He knows that. Everyone involved in the debate knows that.

pJ6IS1L

When you combine fever-swamp leftism with his protectionism and border policies, Trump looks less like a new sensation in American politics and more like a famous and talented gene splice of an old-school Teamster and a millennial Salon.com editor. He’s an old-fashioned union Democrat and a new-fangled conspiracy theorist. He’s got a chronic case of Bush Derangement Syndrome. I used to think his public persona was that of a WWE wrestler. Now I think he’s Pajama Boy with ’roid rage, tweeting until his thumbs fall off…”

But if his South Carolina soliloquy didn’t sour Trumpeteers to The Donald’s supposed appeal, perhaps this will…

Trump warns RNC isn’t honoring ‘pledge,’ threatens to sue Cruz

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump meets supporters after a campaign rally in Greenville

…though we doubt it.  Hells bells; Trump could seduce his devotees’ daughters and they’d chalk it up as simply another sign he’s not beholden to or bound by The Establishment and its traditions.

And for those who still fail to recognize the seriousness of our situation, Townhall.com‘s Kurt Schlichter sounds the warning siren:

The GOP Sitcom Just Got Serious

vuk

“…The nonsense needs to end.  This just got real.

The next president will appoint Justice Scalia’s replacement, and thereby determine whether the Supreme Court will remain a bulwark of liberty or a tool of liberal fascismthat is, assuming that sad sack Mitch McConnell stays sacked up and refuses to allow a vote on whatever token commie Obama decides to nominate.

…No more games, no more clowning around.  There’s no question Cruz and Rubio will nominate real conservatives.  But The Donald?  Donald Trump’s frivolous speculation about appointing his ultra-liberal federal judge sister to the Supreme Court was vaguely amusing when it was just a hypothetical; now we need real answers.  We need the names of the real, committed conservatives he would appoint to replace Justice Scalia.  “I’ll find the best people, brilliant people, fabulous people” won’t cut it.  Who, Donald?

Let me help: How about Justice Don Willett from Texas?  How about Professor Glenn Reynolds, aka Instapundit?  How about Ted Cruz?  You can get points for diversity by nominating a Canadian.

Donald Trump needs to get serious, and not just about his stupid neo-Trutherism

…There are three candidates.  Trump, Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio.  No one else has a path to the nomination.  The rest are in the way.

This is truly it, conservatives.  The Democrats would disarm and gag us and set the Constitution on fire.  There is a very real chance that their campaign to crush normal Americans into submission would rip the country apart.  Literally.

Those are the stakes.  They could not be higher.  It’s time to can the comedy and get serious.

Trump doesn’t even rise to the level of comedy; he’s a complete and utter farce.

Which brings us, appropriately enough, to today’s installment of Tales From the Darkside, as, courtesy of NRO, Dennis Prager opines on one of Modern Liberalism’s most pervasive, injurious myths:

The Fallacy of ‘White Privilege

-irish

“…First, no reasonable person (Which eliminates 99% of Progressives!) can argue that white privilege applies to the great majority of whites, let alone to all whites. There are simply too many variables other than race that determine individual success in America.

And if it were true, why would whites commit suicide at twice the rate of blacks (and at a higher rate than any other race in America except American Indians)? According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, white men, who the Left argues are the most privileged group of all in America, commit seven out of every ten suicides in America — even though only three out of ten Americans are white males. Whatever reason one gives for the white suicide rate, it is indisputable that, at the very least, considerably more whites than blacks consider life not worth living. To argue that all these whites were oblivious to all the unique privileges they had is to stretch the definition of “privilege” beyond credulity.

f3f9684213dc21141cb6307510fcdb8e

Second, there are a host of privileges that dwarf “white privilege.” A huge one is Two-Parent Privilege. If you are raised by a father and mother, you enter adulthood with more privileges than anyone else in American society, irrespective of race, ethnicity, or sex. That’s why the poverty rate among two-parent black families is only 7 percent. Compare that with a 22 percent poverty rate among whites in single-parent homes. Obviously the two-parent home is the decisive “privilege.”

…And the biggest privilege of all is American privilege. Unless you or your family make some big mistakes, the greatest privilege of all is to be an American. That’s why much of the world wants to live in America.

wpid-wp-1444524783943

So then why all this left-wing talk about white privilege? The major reason is in order to portray blacks as victims. This achieves two huge goals for the Left — one political, the other philosophical.

The political goal is to ensure that blacks continue to view America as racist. The Left knows that the only way to retain political power in America is to perpetuate the belief among black Americans that their primary problem is white racism. Only then will blacks continue to regard the Left and the Democrats as indispensable.

THEYWERE_WHITE_AND_THEYWERE_SLAVES_chlid

The philosophical reason is that the Left deniesas it has since Marxthe primacy of moral and cultural values in determining the fate of the individual and of society. In the Left’s view, it is not poor values or a lack of moral self-control that causes crime, but poverty and, in the case of black criminals, racism. Therefore, the disproportionate amount of violent crime committed by black males is not attributable to the moral failure of the black criminal or to the likelihood of his not having been raised by a father, but to an external factor over which he has little or no powerwhite racism.

migrant-mother

White privilege is another left-wing attempt, and a successful one, to keep America from focusing on what will truly help black America — a resurrection of the black family, for example — and instead to focus on an external problem: white privilege. In doing so, the Left has become the only real enemy the black has in America today.

The concept of “White Privilege” is about as real as the “science” of anthropogenic global warming…and as accurate as Al Sharpton’s tax returns.

For Platoon aficionados, it’s sorta like the difference between what Junior thinks…

…and any semblance of reality.  Then again, Junior always was

…full of it!  As for the continuing plight of “Black America”, physician, heal thyself; i.e., free your minds…truly free your minds…from the slavery of Modern Liberalism, and your overstuffed, ignorant, Beyoncé-sized asses are bound to follow!
