It’s Wednesday, February 24th, 2016…but hold the countdown for a brief observation about the end…mercifully, at least for the country in our opinion…of the Bush dynasty.  As we’ve observed before, George H.W. Bush breaking his no-new-taxes pledge, along with an incredibly listless campaign, birthed 8 years of Bubba.  George W.’s most enduring legacy, due to trillions in unnecessary debt…war and otherwise…was 8 years of Barry.  We shudder to think what beast Jeb might have begot.

But back to the subject at hand: what’s struck us most about every single post-mortem of the last Bush campaign is the failure, even from the likes of John Podhoretz, to recognize, let alone emphasize what we consider Jeb’s most glaring disconnect:

Jeb Bush on Illegal Immigrants Crossing The Border: “An Act Of Love

Yeah…

Jeb-Bush-Border-greeter-illegal_alien_borderActs-1act-of-love-jeb-bush

…right!  That and the gooney glasses which, rather than gravitas, gave him look like a cross-eyed librarian.  Forget being the wrong candidate at the wrong moment; Jeb might as well have been George Wallace or Lester Maddux…running for mayor of Berkeley.

The Bushes’ blessed passing into history evokes the thought of Captain “Lucky Jack” Aubrey in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World upon being surprised twice by his French adversary: “This is the second time he’s done this to me. There will not be a third!”

Now, here’s The Gouge!

First up, writing at NRO‘s Morning Jolt, Jim Geraghty comments on what sounds like a Raymond Chandler mystery: the Curious Case of the Compulsory Candidate.

“We’ve had three Democratic contests in their presidential primary, and so far we’ve been allowed to see the vote totals in one of them. Heck of a party you’ve got there, my friends.

Yet Hillary Clinton’s five-point win in the Nevada caucus — where the vote totals are handled more securely and with more secrecy than classified information on Hillary’s server — was treated as a decisive turning point in a lot of corners of the media this weekend…

Do you get the feeling some folks want to declare the Democratic primary over?

Bernie Sanders won 47 percent on Saturday. I haven’t seen the figure “47 percent” get this much bad press since Mitt Romney’s comments to donors.

Think about it, we’ve had one razor-thin Hillary win (Iowa), one Sanders landslide (New Hampshire), and one reasonably solid Hillary win (Nevada). Take a guess at what the delegate split is…(Play “Jeopardy” theme here.) “Mrs. Clinton has 502 delegates to Mr. Sanders’s 70; 2,383 are needed to win the nomination.”

Perhaps, in the interest of…you know…fairness, the Dims should consider an alternative standard bearer:

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, in two deservedly scathing commentaries, NRO‘s Ian Tuttle reveals the true persona of the would-be leader of The Gang Who Still Can’t Shoot Straight.  Trumpeteers take heed, because what you’re about to read is the unvarnished truth about the man you’re depending upon to bring clean up the cesspool which is our nation’s capital.  First…

The Playboy Bully of the Western World

donald-trump-global-bully-b

“…According to The Independent, Trump’s lavish promise of 6,000 jobs and a £1 billion investment in Scotland’s economy was empty; the Menie project has resulted in just 200 jobs, and best estimates suggest that he has invested just £25 million.

And it’s quite possible the country will never see the promised money. In December, Trump lost a protracted legal battle (Anyone else detecting a pattern here?!?) with the Scottish government, which had previously permitted development of an offshore wind farm in view of Trump’s Menie golf course. Since the U.K. supreme court’s unanimous ruling against him, Trump has threatened to discontinue development on the Scottish coast. The man who piled up earthworks to block residents’ view of the sea says that the wind farm would spoil the view from his resort.

donald-trump-global-bully

It would be an extraordinary irony if Donald Trump secured the Republican nomination riding a groundswell of working-class anger toward “elites.” In Scotland, Trump teamed up with “elites” in the local and national government in an attempt to railroad working-class residents out of their homes. In Scotland, Donald Trump was not against “special interests.” He was special interests…”

Trump’s Yuuge Lies

the-7-most-ridiculous-things-donald-trump-has-said-in-the-last-2-weeks

The Donald: he lies like a bad rug!

“Among South Carolina Republicans who preferred above all else a candidate “who tells it like it is,” 77 percent voted for Donald J. Trump. That is astonishing, given that Donald Trump’s entire life has been an extended exercise in deception.

…Trump’s entire personal and professional history is Obama-esque: When it serves his interests, Trump lies. He has lied to business associates, employees, friends, spouses, and now to millions of prospective voters. Anyone who thinks that Trump will not lie to them, or that he will at least tell the truth about “important things” — immigration or ISIS or whatever — is deluding himself. When it becomes expedient for Trump to lie, he will.

“You can’t con people, at least not for long,” Trump wrote in The Art of the Deal. “If you don’t deliver the goods, people will eventually catch on.” His supporters may prove otherwise.

Though frankly, as our brother-in-law Brutus, F-14 jock par excellence, recently noted: not unless he’s photographed giving birth to a Hillary supporter…

Donald Trump’s Tax Return Dodge

He shoots the messenger—us—for asking to see his ‘beautiful’ returns.

payn_c13892120160220120100

Donald Trump didn’t become the favorite for the Republican presidential nominee without having political talent—not least his ability to unleash a torrent of verbiage that ducks a question. If he loses in the end, the guy should start up Trump Political School.

Consider the businessman’s response Sunday to a question about when he would release his tax returns, as he has already promised to do. George Stephanopoulos of ABC’s “This Week” quoted our Saturday editorial calling on Mr. Trump to release his returns “so Republicans can know what they’re voting for.” Mr. Stephanopoulos: “Will you release them by Super Tuesday? Don’t Republican voters have a right to know?”

Mr. Trump erupted in that now-familiar and calculated way in which he pretends he is the victim of a great injustice:

Well, first, no, I won’t. No, no, no, I won’t. I’m working on it. We’re working on, they’re massive. You saw pictures of me. But let me tell you about The Wall Street Journal. I have no respect whatsoever for The Wall Street Journal. I don’t think they know what they’re doing.

“They have taken me on so much it’s so ridiculous. Every day, editorials, bad editorials, and they had a poll come out, which was so wrong. I said they should fire their pollster and they should fire their editorial staff because I think these are people that don’t know what they’re doing.

“I don’t even want to read it very much anymore. They’re so wrong.”

So Mr. Trump shouldn’t have to release his tax returns because he says The Wall Street Journal doesn’t like him…”

Shades of Megyn Kelly!!!  As Lurch would say…

What will it take for the Trumpeteers to realize once (Heaven forbid!!!) The Donald’s truly in the Republican driver’s seat, the MSM will carve him up like a Thanksgiving turkey?!?

Think about it: like the positive press currently accorded John Kasich, in 2008 The New York Times almost swooned over John McCain…right up until the moment he won the Republican nomination; whereupon the The Old Grey Nag unloaded a story so libelous the lobbyist in question sued the rag for defamation.

And one can only begin to imagine the skeletons…

So, who’s staying home in November if Trump’s the nominee?

trump-rushmore-720

“I am, says Erick Erickson, and he’s not alone. One of the chief coping mechanisms from righties on social media this weekend upon surveying the destruction in South Carolina was to swear they’ll never be a Trumpist, even if the heavens fall. I believe Erickson, but I’d also bet cash money that 90 percent of the people saying “HELL NO NEVER HAPPEN” today will grudgingly come around over the next eight months upon being reminded, not on a daily but on an hourly basis, that Hillary Clinton is a pathological liar who’d be in prison if not for her status as the creme de la creme of Washington’s elites.

I’m not saying conservative revulsion at Trump isn’t real. It is, and I think when it all shakes out in November that Trump will have seen more Republicans stay home for him than stayed home for either Romney or McCain. But I don’t think there’ll be a third party and I also don’t think that some sliver of conservatives staying home will doom Trump’s candidacy. Given Hillary’s weakness and his own appeal to independents and Reagan Democrats, it’s possible that he’d find the votes he needs to win in the center. That would be the final indignity to the conservative movement after having its impotence laid bare for more than a year — staging a mass boycott of Trump on election day and discovering that Trump can win anyway…”

Likewise, given the choice, we’ll pull the Trump lever with one hand while holding our nose with the other…and holding those who actively advocated for this madman accountable for their utter lack of judgment; then depend upon a Republican Congress to hold him in check.

After Kalamazoo Shooting, Obama Reminds Americans Gun Control Is the Answer

7485003_f260

“President Obama on Monday weighed in on the shooting spree in Kalamazoo, Mich., over the weekend that took the lives of six people and injured two others. Not surprisingly, he used the tragedy to again remind Americans that it’s time to get serious about gun control.

“Their local officials and first responders did an outstanding job in apprehending the individual very quickly,” Obama said at a meeting of the National Governors Association at the White House. “But you’ve got families who are shattered today.” “I’ve got to assume that all of your are just as tired as I am of seeing this stuff happen in your states,” the president said.

Meanwhile, three people died over the weekend and 29 were wounded in shootings across Chicago, despite the city already having some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation. No word from the president on these shootings, however.

Here’s the juice: the Progressive penchant for ineffective legislation is just another aspect of their utterly incomprehensible ideology:

Pope Francis calls on Christians to abolish death penalty: ‘make a courageous and exemplary gesture’

85650034_85650031

“Pope Francis on Sunday urged Catholic leaders to show “exemplary” courage by not allowing executions this year, while expressing hope that eventually the death penalty will be abolished worldwide. Francis told tourists and pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square that “the commandment ‘do not kill’ holds absolute value and applies to both the innocent and the guilty.”

He added that there is “an ever more widespread opposition in public opinion to the death penalty, even only as an instrument of legitimate social defense.” “I appeal to the conscience of those who govern so that international consensus is reached for the abolishment of the death penalty,” the pope said. “And I propose to all those among them who are Catholic to make a courageous and exemplary gesture: may no execution sentence be carried out in this Holy Year of Mercy.”…”

Funny he didn’t mention the concepts of conscience and mercy, let alone the absolute nature of ‘thou shall not kill’, to the biggest mass murderers to hit the western hemisphere…
