Washington Free Beacon<\/em>&#8216;s Matt Continetti offers up, we&#8217;re always dismayed by him consistently conflating (including, but by no means limited to,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/12ft.io\/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commentary.org%2Farticles%2Fmatthew-continetti%2Fconservative-factionalism%2F&amp;mkt_tok=NDc1LVBCUS05NzEAAAGDxnzpcdNQXzAv3uTlECgTs5E3yxCEs0IKEWD0PNUe67wiaJsXiSYidiZ63z--UPJujKqxJ1n5-Z3zfm7GsQr8aqFPFG1N7j5nRuS-8iSx3CM\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em>here<\/em><\/span><\/a> and <a ILLEGAL immigration and open borders with hostility towards LAWFUL immigration across closely-controlled national boundaries.\u00a0 No one we know, The Donald and Ron DeSantis included, opposes <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">measured amounts<\/span><\/em> of LEGAL immigration, and we&#8217;re frankly at a loss to explain the continued confusion of Continetti and a number of other Conservative scribes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, here&#8217;s <em>The Gouge<\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First up, since we mentioned\u00a0<em>The Washington Free Beacon<\/em>, in its pages one Charles Lehman reaches an unequivocal conclusion we came to years ago:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"mb-3 text-red font-serif text-xl md:text-4xl\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/media\/yes-the-media-bury-the-race-of-murderers-if-theyre-not-white\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\">Free Beacon analysis shows how homicide coverage downplays the race of minority offenders<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a 30px;\">&#8220;&#8230;<span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Yes<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">A\u00a0<em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em>\u00a0review of hundreds of articles published by major papers over a span of two years finds that <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">papers downplay the race of non-white offenders<\/span><\/em>, mentioning their race <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>much later<\/em><\/span> in articles <span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>if <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">at all<\/span>!!!<\/em>)<\/span> than they do for white offenders.<\/span> These papers are also three to four times more likely to mention an offender&#8217;s race at all <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">if he is white<\/span><\/em>, a disparity that <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">grew<\/span><\/em> in the wake of George Floyd&#8217;s death in 2020 and the protests that followed.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The\u00a0<em>Free Beacon<\/em>\u00a0collected data on nearly 1,100 articles about homicides from six major papers, all written between 2019 and 2021.<\/span> Those papers included the\u00a0<em>Chicago Tribune<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>,\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Philadelphia Inquirer<\/em>,\u00a0<em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>, and Minneapolis&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Star-Tribune<\/em>\u2014representatives of each paper <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">did not return<\/span><\/em> requests for comment for this article. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">For each article, we collected the offender&#8217;s and victim&#8217;s name and race, and noted where in the article the offender&#8217;s race was mentioned, <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">if at all<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>The data suggest an alarming editorial trend in which major papers <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">routinely omit information from news reports<\/span><\/em>, presenting readers with a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>skewed picture<\/em><\/span> of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>who does and doesn&#8217;t commit crime<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">These editorial choices are part and parcel with the &#8220;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/07\/10\/889773113\/reckoning-with-race-in-journalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">racial reckoning<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>&#8221; that swept newsrooms in the wake of Floyd&#8217;s murder, which saw journalists dramatically overhauling crime coverage <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">to emphasize the view that the criminal justice system is racist at the root<\/span><\/em>\u2014<span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">perhaps<\/span><\/em><\/span> at the expense of honesty about individual offenders&#8217; crimes<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1-2-1-2048x1280.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-101318\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1-2-1-2048x1280.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"313\" brother<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/LA-Fatal-Stabbing-Suspect-1-copy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-101319\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/LA-Fatal-Stabbing-Suspect-1-copy.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" a <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">black fisherman hat<\/span><\/em> with marijuana leaves, a <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">turquoise t-shirt<\/span><\/em>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>light-colored shorts<\/em><\/span> with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>dark shoes<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>As opposed to sporting a dark face and arms, both of which are infinitely tougher to change than, say, a hat, shirt, shorts or shoes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In what can only be pure coincidence, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wltx.com\/article\/news\/crime\/report-shooting-inside-columbiana-centre\/101-5704a316-69ed-4e7f-baf3-3e97c3069e6a\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reports of the Columbiana Centre mall shootings<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a>\u00a0ALSO omitted the race of the gunmen, though with a little digging we are able to introduce you to Mr. Jewayne Price&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/jewaybe.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-101348\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/jewaybe-276x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/jewaybe-276x300.png 276w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/jewaybe.png 387w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8230;<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one<\/span><\/em> of <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">three<\/span><\/em> suspected shooters.\u00a0 Anyone care to guess the race of the remaining two?!?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/but-wait.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-101368\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/but-wait.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"188\" (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><strong>Apparently, a<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>South Carolina\u00a0judge set a $25,000 bond for Jewayne, allowing the suspect, if he posts the minuscule bond, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/south-carolina-mall-shooting-suspects-bond-set-at-25000-can-go-to-work-with-ankle-monitor\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">to be held under\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">house arrest and allowed to travel to and from work while wearing an ankle monitor<\/span><\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As we&#8217;ve repeatedly observed in the past, it&#8217;s <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">almost<\/span><\/em> as if&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>gasp<\/em><\/span>!!!&#8230;law enforcement doesn&#8217;t want the perps apprehended, and when arrested, not to suffer any meaningful consequences for their crimes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>All of which is par for the course for a crowd, as\u00a0<em>NRO<\/em>&#8216;s Rich Lowry accurately assesses, whose nominal leader&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"article-header__title\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: president to misspeak so routinely that it almost seems strange when he gets it right.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>It\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not normal<\/em><\/span> for a president to shovel trillions of dollars into a growing economy, and then still want to spend trillions more when it\u2019s clear that inflation is a real problem.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>It\u2019s <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not normal<\/span><\/em> for a president to want to suppress U.S. oil and gas production at the same time he begs OPEC to pump more.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>It\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not normal<\/em><\/span> for a president to open the floodgates for illegal migration at the southern border and pretend that if he doesn\u2019t call the ensuing deluge a \u201ccrisis,\u201d it somehow isn\u2019t.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>It\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not normal<\/em><\/span> for a president to abandon his long-standing support for the Senate filibuster to try to pass a no-hope Democratic voting bill and warn of looming autocracy if the legislation doesn\u2019t pass.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>It\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not normal<\/em><\/span> (or shouldn\u2019t be) for a president to extend an eviction moratorium that he knows is illegal.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>It\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not normal<\/em><\/span> for a president to abandon Americans in a foreign country after his withdrawal of U.S. forces, against the advice of his generals, leads to a hostile force rapidly sweeping to power.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>It\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not normal<\/em><\/span> for a president\u2019s son and brother to get millions of dollars in easy money from a company that is a cat\u2019s-paw of the Chinese government.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>It\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not normal<\/em><\/span> for a first-term president to be on the verge of becoming a lame duck because almost no one believes his assurances that he\u2019s going to run again (only 41 percent of Democrats in a recent\u00a0<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0poll say they think Biden will run in 2024).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">It\u2019s a badly divided country at a time of growing threats abroad and of declining faith in U.S. institutions.<\/span> These are serious challenges that it would take deft, farsighted presidential leadership to overcome. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Instead, what\u2019s on offer isn\u2019t even above-average presidential leadership, and that\u2019s not going to change.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>For Joe Biden, this rocky, uninspired performance is indeed the norm.<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s the juice: it&#8217;s life
