Jewish schools and synagogues are rapidly expanding.<\/span> Jews from the Northeast and Midwest, as well as Latin America and Israel, are migrating to the Sunshine State in significant numbers, making the Jewish communities there lively and varied. <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Florida\u2019s booming and low-tax economy is no doubt one of the attractions to young Jews seeking to build a prosperous future for themselves and their families.<\/span> So is Florida\u2019s educational system, which provides tax credits that assist many parents in sending their children to Jewish day schools.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">A few years ago, we helped launch the Jewish Leadership Conference, an annual gathering to consider the challenges facing the Jewish people and Israel.<\/span> It is hosted by Tikvah, a 20-year old Jewish educational and cultural institution whose main activity in America is teaching young Jews about Jewish history and civilization. <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">We thought it would be interesting to invite Gov. Ron DeSantis to discuss how the \u201cFlorida model\u201d has contributed to the growth and vitality of Jewish life in his state.<\/span> The event was to be held at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City. <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Until<\/em><\/span>, as the saying goes, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>we got canceled<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Over the years, Tikvah has hosted numerous conferences at the museum, always including prominent Jewish, Israeli and American thinkers and leaders of various political and religious points of view. <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">We were working closely with the museum on the details for the June 12 event\u2014until, out of the blue, we were told by the museum staff that Mr. DeSantis <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>didn\u2019t \u201calign with the museum\u2019s values and its message of inclusivity<\/em><\/span>.\u201d<\/span> Either we <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>disinvite<\/em><\/span> the governor, they said, or our event was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>unwelcome<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Throughout the modern age, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Jews<\/em><\/span> have suffered the consequences of this kind of intolerance.<\/span> We see it all the time on college campuses, where anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism have become a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>tolerated<\/em><\/span> (and even <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>celebrated<\/em><\/span>) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>form of discrimination<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">We see it in the boycott, divest and sanctions movement, which advocates treating Israel as a pariah.<\/span> We see it in the U.N., with its odious anti-Israel Human Rights Council and with Amnesty International\u2019s \u201capartheid state\u201d calumny.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>But we know things are bad when a Jewish institution\u2014in this case, a museum whose purpose is to keep Jewish heritage alive by remembering the Holocaust\u2014<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>turns on its own and tries to make a virtue of its own intolerance<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jta.org\/2022\/05\/06\/politics\/did-a-new-york-holocaust-museum-ban-florida-gov-ron-desantis-depends-whom-you-ask\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em>the museum denies canceling an event it claims was never actually booked<\/em><\/span><\/a>, and has invited DeSantis to attend the June 30th opening of a major revision to its main exhibition.\u00a0 Note, DeSantis is invited to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>attend<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not<\/em><\/span> to <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">speak<\/span><\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Next, writing at <em>Best of the Web<\/em>, Jim Freeman details the &#8220;rules&#8221; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Intimidation-Game-Left-Silencing-Speech\/dp\/1455591890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>\u00a0\u201cThe Intimidation Game\u201d about the political left\u2019s bare-knuckled attempts to silence conservatives. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Now the so-called progressives who run much of the American government are encouraging or condoning efforts to bully the Supreme Court into political obedience.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Today Ms. Strassel\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a class=\"icon none\" style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/nothing-but-roe-to-run-on-democrats-midterms-wade-leak-supreme-court-campaign-midterm-11651783715?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writes<\/a><\/em><\/span>:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The liberal response to Justice Samuel Alito\u2019s draft opinion that would overturn\u00a0Roe v. Wade\u00a0was as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">predictable<\/span> as it was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">substance-free<\/span>.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Forget<\/span> any discussion about the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">legal reasoning<\/span> in the case. <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Or<\/span> any soul-searching as to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">how<\/span> Democrats came to face a 6-3 conservative high-court majority.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Or<\/span> any internal debate about how the party might craft an agenda that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">resonates<\/span> with the public, so that it can <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">maintain<\/span> its hold on power and begin the process of reshaping the court.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Instead<\/span>, Democrats proposed to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">burn every Washington institution down<\/span>.<\/span> Party leaders and activists <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">openly attempted to intimidate<\/span> the justices, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hoping to change<\/span> the outcome.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unapologetic effort<\/span><\/em> to bring political pressure to bear on the judiciary is shocking <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>even<\/em><\/span> to some media folk.<\/span> Here\u2019s the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a class=\"icon none\" style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/preprod.abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/GMA3\/video\/democratic-congresswoman-discusses-fallout-supreme-court-leak-84494198\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transcript<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0of an interview T.J. Holmes of ABC News conducted this week with Rep. Karen Bass (D., Calif.) after Justice Alito\u2019s draft opinion was leaked:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Mr. Holmes<\/em>: Congresswoman, the Chief Justice called this an egregious breach, this leak. What should happen to the person who leaked this? It might not rise to the level of a criminal act, but&#8211;but it\u2019s not just that this was a leak. This was a leak in this particular case, at this particular moment. What should happen to the person who leaked this?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em>Rep. Bass<\/em>: Well, I think it\u2019s going to be very curious as to who that person was and what their motives were, but I do have to say, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>I\u2019m glad that it was leaked<\/em><\/span>, because now <em>maybe<\/em>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>just maybe<\/em><\/span>, the justices will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>rethink this<\/em><\/span> as they see the outrage spread across the country. We know that&#8211;or at least we are hearing, that some vote took place, but we also know in the process before a final decision is made there could be other drafts. We have to see what the Chief Justice is going to do. So, maybe, maybe, it provides a little bit of hope that this will not ultimately be the decision of the Supreme Court.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Mr. Holmes<\/em>: Well, Congresswoman, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>that\u2019s a touchy road to go down<\/em><\/span> as well, to think we&#8211;we want the court <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not<\/em><\/span> to be influenced by politics. Are you saying now that this is out there that maybe they will see the backlash and change their minds? We <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>don\u2019t<\/em><\/span> want our court to be doing <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>that either<\/em><\/span>, to be <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">influenced by public opinion<\/span><\/em> or debate out there, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>do we<\/em><\/span>?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em>Rep. Bass<\/em>: Well, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>seriously<\/em><\/span>, we know the court is <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">always<\/span><\/em> impacted by public opinion. <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Absolutely<\/span><\/em>. And I\u2019m just saying that maybe it gives an opportunity for them to rethink that. But I think that it would be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>naive<\/em><\/span> to think that the court is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not<\/em><\/span> influenced by public opinion.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Mr. Holmes<\/em>: Well, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>call me<\/em><\/span> the naive American out there, Congresswoman.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Call Mr. Holmes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>sensible and responsible<\/em><\/span> for recognizing the role of the judicial branch in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>interpreting<\/em><\/span> the law, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not<\/em><\/span> bending to political will. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">He <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>stands in stark contrast<\/em><\/span> to elected Democrats who casually and recklessly attempt to influence America\u2019s independent judiciary.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Readers may recall a pathetic non-apology issued in Washington two years ago. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">NBC\u2019s Rebecca Shabad of NBC News\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a class=\"icon none\" style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/schumer-denies-threatening-supreme-court-justices-says-i-shouldn-t-n1150446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0at the time:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em>Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Thursday that he <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">regretted<\/span> saying that two Supreme Court justices \u201cwon\u2019t know what hit\u201d them if they vote to uphold abortion restrictions, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">insisted he was not making a threat<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">offered no apology<\/span>.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">This week anyone hoping for a clear White House rejection of the intimidation game has been disappointed.<\/span> Here\u2019s the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a class=\"icon none broken_link\" style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2022\/05\/05\/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-jen-psaki-may-5-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transcript<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0of Thursday evening\u2019s White House press conference, when Press Secretary Jen Psaki was questioned by Peter Doocy of Fox News:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Q<\/em>&#8230; So, you guys had some time yesterday talking about what you think are the extreme wings of the Republican Party. Do you think the progressive activists that are now planning protests outside some of the justices\u2019 houses are extreme?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em>MS. PSAKI<\/em>: Peaceful protest? No. Peaceful protest is not extreme.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Q<\/em> But some of these justices have young kids. Their neighbors are not all public figures. So would the President think about waving off activists that want to go into residential neighborhoods in Virginia and Maryland?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em>MS. PSAKI<\/em>: Peter, look, I think our view here is that peaceful protest \u2014 there\u2019s a long history in the United States and the country of that. And we certainly encourage people to keep it peaceful and not resort to any level of violence.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Let me tell you what I was referring to and what the President was referring to yesterday.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Q<\/em> Not about yesterday, though \u2014 just about moving forward. These activists posted a map with the home addresses of the Supreme Court justices. Is that the kind of thing this President wants to help your side make their point?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em>MS. PSAKI<\/em>: Look, I think the President\u2019s view is that there\u2019s a lot of passion, a lot of fear, a lot of sadness from many, many people across this country about what they saw in that leaked document. We obviously want people\u2019s privacy to be respected. We want people to protest peacefully if they want to \u2014 to protest. That is certainly what the President\u2019s view would be.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Q<\/em> So he doesn\u2019t care if they\u2019re protesting outside the Supreme Court or outside someone\u2019s private residence?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em>MS. PSAKI<\/em>: I don\u2019t have an official U.S. government position on where people protest. I want it \u2014 we want it, of course, to be peaceful. And certainly, the President would want people\u2019s privacy to be respected.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>But I think we shouldn\u2019t lose the point here: The reason people are protesting is because women across the country are worried about their fundamental rights that have been law for 50 years. Their rights to make choices about their own bodies and their own healthcare are at risk. <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">That\u2019s<\/span><\/em> why people are protesting.
