White House is in Damage Control Mode After Biden’s Commitment to Defend Taiwan<\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n

“As Leah\u00a0reported earlier<\/a><\/em><\/span>, President Biden made comments while on his swing through Asia about how the United States would react to a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan and, as a result, the White House is springing into action \u2014 yet again<\/em><\/span> \u2014 to do damage control.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking at a news conference in Japan, Biden said \u201cyes<\/span>\u201d when a reporter asked whether he\u2019s \u201cwilling to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan if it comes to that.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Confirming the president\u2019s position, the reporter again asked: \u201cYou are?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the commitment we made,\u201d the president responded.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Biden’s words, according to The New York Times, “surprised some members of Mr. Biden\u2019s own administration watching in the room” and set off another round of quick clarifications from West Wing aides about what the president *meant<\/em><\/span>* to say.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

…<\/span>“The White House quickly tried to deny that the president meant<\/em><\/span> what he seemed<\/em><\/span> to be saying,” The Times added in their\u00a0dispatch<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0from Tokyo.<\/span> “‘As the president said, our policy has not changed,’ the White House said in a statement hurriedly sent to reporters. ‘He reiterated our One China Policy and our commitment to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.<\/span> He also reiterated our commitment under the Taiwan Relations Act to provide Taiwan with the military means to defend itself.'”\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

But, as The Times notes, Biden’s statement “went beyond<\/em><\/span> simply reiterating that the United States would provide Taiwan with arms, because the question was posed as a contrast to what he had done with Ukraine<\/em><\/span>.”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

…<\/span>While the White House has done its apparent best to limit the number of Biden gaffes \u2014 especially ones that sound like the president is trying to wade the United States into some sort of World War III on two fronts<\/em><\/span> \u2014 they’re just not able to keep up. Even after moving Biden’s events from the Oval Office in the actual White House to a Truman Show-esque stage in an adjacent auditorium, aides still can’t keep their boss from muddying the waters on critical topics of international impact.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>“<\/p>\n
