M.] Seneviratne, a lean 65-year-old with a shock of silver hair, who has been farming since he was a child.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u201cLast year, we got 60 bags from these two acres.<\/span> But this time it was just 10,\u201d he added.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">The dramatic fall in yields follows a decision last April by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ban all chemical fertilizers<\/span> in Sri Lanka \u2013 a move that risks undermining support among rural voters who are key to his family\u2019s grip on Sri Lankan politics<\/span>.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>Although the ban was rolled back after widespread protests, only a trickle of chemical fertilizers made it to farms, which will likely lead to an annual drop of at least 30% in paddy yields nationwide, according to agricultural experts.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Sri Lanka is a small island nation off the coast of India.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.diethelmtravel.com\/5-films-shot-in-sri-lanka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" testid=\"standard-link\" class=\"broken_link\">When Hollywood needs a jungle<\/a><\/em><\/span>, it films there.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>The Bridge on the River Kwai<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom<\/em>, and one of the\u00a0<em>Jungle Book<\/em>\u00a0movies all included scenes shot on the island.<\/span> It is about as far as a country can get from the United States, and when news about the country has reached Americans, it was usually bad news \u2014 such as the government\u2019s long battle against the Tamil Tigers terrorist group,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewhumanitarian.org\/analysis\/2014\/12\/24\/sri-lanka-tsunami-and-evolution-disaster-response\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" testid=\"standard-link\" class=\"broken_link\">or the devastating 2004 tsunami<\/a><\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Yet with the Tamil insurgency defeated, in the past few years, Sri Lanka had begun to look like a success story by the standards of the region.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2022\/06\/sri-lankas-collapse-and-the-end-of-globalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"dynamic-link\">As our Dominic Pino laid out<\/a><\/em><\/span>:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">By 2019 it had been\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.lk\/columns\/Sri-Lanka-s-elevation-to-upper-middle-income-status-Attainment-is-welcome-but-challenges-are-more\/4-681449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">elevated<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u00a0from a lower-middle-income country to an upper-middle-income country by World Bank classifications.<\/span> Its\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/ny.gdp.pcap.pp.cd?most_recent_value_desc=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" testid=\"standard-link\" class=\"broken_link\">GDP per capita<\/a><\/span>, adjusted for purchasing power, is about double that of India, about the same as the poorer countries of Eastern Europe such as Ukraine and Moldova, and only slightly behind Brazil. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Its largest city of Colombo had become a tourist destination.<\/span> It\u2019s not a wealthy country by any stretch of the imagination, but it was doing well for its neighborhood, and its 22 million inhabitants saw a dramatic improvement in their quality of life in the past decade.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">But everything fell apart fast: Inflation is raging out of control, the government defaulted on its debts, an energy crisis led to rolling blackouts, and the food shortages spurred massive crowds of people to storm into the houses of the country\u2019s wealthy rulers and effectively topple the government.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2117216\/world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" testid=\"standard-link\" class=\"broken_link\">Inflation in Sri Lanka has reached jaw-dropping levels<\/a><\/em><\/span>: \u201cConsumer prices rose 54.6 percent in June from a year earlier, with transport surging 128 percent from the previous month and food 80 percent.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/the-global-crisis-youre-not-hearing-about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"dynamic-link\">Back in May<\/a><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">, I noted that the Russian invasion of Ukraine meant that two of the world\u2019s biggest grain exporters were effectively taken out of the market, as well as Russian exports of fertilizer.<\/span> I also said:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">The global fertilizer shortage is likely to reduce crop yields in a lot of places, which means we may be dealing with a worse problem in the coming months and years.<\/span> Using less fertilizer usually translates into fewer crops. . . . <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hungry<\/span> people do things that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">well-fed<\/span> people <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">do not<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">They protest and they riot.<\/span> Hungry people move across borders as refugees. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">They are more easily recruited into terrorist or extremist groups. . . . Hungry populaces are more likely to turn to demagogues promising an easy solution.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/warontherocks.com\/2021\/11\/to-tackle-instability-and-conflict-its-time-to-elevate-hunger-as-a-national-security-priority\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">Where there is hunger, there is conflict<\/a><\/span>.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/sri-lanka-crisis-flashes-warning-for-other-indebted-economies-11657473277?mod=world_major_1_pos4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em>And as the\u00a0Wall Street Journal\u00a0warns this morning<\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">, there are other debt-ridden countries that are probably not too far from Sri Lanka\u2019s dire position:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>Countries such as Zambia and Lebanon are already in the grip of crises and are seeking international help to provide loans or restructure their debts, while Pakistan\u2019s new government, which came to power in April, says that it\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/pakistan-faces-painful-choice-as-inflation-batters-economy-11652883774?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">narrowly averted a debt default<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in recent weeks, driven by a soaring fuel-import bill. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Foreign-exchange reserves held by the central bank dwindled to cover less than two months\u2019 worth of exports, largely closing off Pakistan\u2019s prospects of tapping international financial markets.<\/span> China, a close ally, provided a $2.3 billion loan in June to shore up the foreign-currency reserves.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-07-07\/why-developing-countries-are-facing-a-debt-default-crisis#xj4y7vzkg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" testid=\"standard-link\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bloomberg News adds El Salvador, Ghana, Egypt, and Tunisia to the troubled list<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>But Pakistan stands out, as that country has\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sipri.org\/yearbook\/2021\/10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">an estimated 165 nuclear weapons<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.outlookindia.com\/business\/what-is-pakistan-economic-crisis-debt-ridden-sipping-less-tea-is-pakistan-the-next-sri-lanka-petrol-price-in-pakistan-what-is-sri-lanka-crisis-news-206111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" testid=\"standard-link\" class=\"broken_link\">One Indian business publication\u2019s assessment of the Pakistani economy reads like a horror show<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">, and it explicitly compares that country to Sri Lanka: runaway foreign debt; skyrocketing cost of foreign imports; a collapsing currency; falling exports; shortages of food, fuel, and medicines; hoping for rescue from the International Monetary Fund but having no negotiating leverage; and a recovery plan that relies on people drinking less tea and exporting donkeys to China.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>You would <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>like<\/em><\/span> to think that a country with a large nuclear arsenal would also know how to manage its borrowing, pay its debts, and keep its economy running smoothly. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Then again, there\u2019s probably some Pakistani out there wondering how an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>American<\/em><\/span> could have the nerve to make <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>that<\/em><\/span> criticism.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>As <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/_lleLDOO-Jk\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;
