color: #0000ff;\"><em>to save the rule of law, the FBI as an institution must be dismantled<\/em><\/span><\/a>, and its component parts placed under new management.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Third, as Joy Pullman accurately asserts at <em>The Federalist<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/08\/criminalizing-opposition-to-the-regime-is-how-the-republic-ends\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em>criminalizing political opposition to the regime is how the Founders&#8217; Republic ends<\/em><\/span><\/a>, as a two-tier justice system is not a justice system, but totalitarianism whose purpose is not justice but power and control.\u00a0 And no, Chris Wray is not in any way, shape or form a good guy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In two related items well worth you time, the <em>Journal<\/em>&#8216;s Kim Strassel suggests <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-payback-for-mar-a-lago-will-be-brutal-trump-raid-fbi-justice-department-president-investigation-11660255311\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em>the payback for Mar-a-Lago will be hell<\/em><\/span><\/a> when Republicans regain control of the DOJ and FBI, while <em>Best of the Web<\/em>, after noting the self-congratulatory nature of Merrick Garland&#8217;s brief, question-less presser, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/trump-garland-and-the-fbi-11660247705?mod=djemBestOfTheWeb\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; for 99.99% of the U.S. population in early August 2022, the last thing on their mind was Mar-a-Lago. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Instead, a short list of real things preoccupying Americans would include inflation, crime, battles in Congress over spending, Ukraine fighting World War III for us in Europe, and China conducting massive live-fire military exercises around Taiwan.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>So it came as a surprise to discover Monday evening that the Justice Department and FBI decided the most important thing in the world just now was raiding former President\u00a0Donald Trump\u2019s estate in Palm Beach, Fla. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Among other thoughts, a three-letter acronym starting with W comes to mind.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong style=\"color: #333399;\">Forgive me for not spending more than a moment on the legal niceties of this event\u2014the applicability of the Presidential Records Act, that it had be about \u201csomething big\u201d involving classified documents, or that no one, including a former president, is above the law. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">They are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>all beside the point<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong style=\"color: #333399;\">You can hate Donald Trump until your eyes pop out, but let us be clear: He\u00a0<em class=\"wsj-i6hrxa-Italic e1i5tkwa0\" data-type=\"emphasis\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">was<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>elected the 45th president of the U.S. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">He served four years in office.<\/span> No former president who was disliked by many\u2014not Clinton, Reagan nor FDR\u2014had his home invaded by a squad of FBI agents. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">This should <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">never<\/span><\/em> happen in the U.S.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>End of discussion<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong style=\"color: #333399;\">But it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>did<\/em><\/span> happen. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Trump raid is now a wall-to-wall\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a class=\"wsj-1h1us5y-StyledLink exk4ewm0\" style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-fbis-dangerous-donald-trump-search-mar-a-lago-merrick-garland-justice-department-11660074118?mod=opinion_lead_pos1&amp;mod=article_inline\" #333399;\">Consider the current spectacle the U.S. is presenting to foreign adversaries. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Multiple members of the sitting president\u2019s own party in the past week\u2014such as\u00a0Joe Manchin\u00a0and Jerry Nadler\u2014have openly abandoned\u00a0Joe Biden\u00a0for an election that is two years off.<\/span> Days later, the previous president comes under explicit attack from the FBI.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Imagine what we would think of the stability of China or Russia if events like this were happening to\u00a0Xi Jinping\u00a0or\u00a0<a class=\"wsj-1h1us5y-StyledLink exk4ewm0\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/topics\/person\/vladimir-putin\" data-type=\"phrase\">Vladimir Putin<\/a>.<\/span> That is how they see us\u2014destabilized and vulnerable. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Our opponents are redoing their global risk-reward ratios.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong style=\"color: #333399;\">Incredibly, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>we<\/em><\/span> are doing this <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>to ourselves<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Correction: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>They<\/em><\/span> are doing it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>to<\/em> <em>us<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Who are \u201cthey\u201d? <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">They, as of Monday, are who much of the political right says they are\u2014the Swamp, the Deep State, the Regime, the Establishment.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong style=\"color: #333399;\">Normally in times of hypermarginalized political opinion, it is worth attempting to argue on behalf of a functioning government system. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">But past some point, that becomes nearly impossible.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong style=\"color: #333399;\">With this raid on a former president\u2019s residence, the Swamp pushed past that point. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The rest of us are being carried along in their undertow of political debris.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong style=\"color: #333399;\">Washington has become a very small town, inhabited by people inbred by profession, marriage, schools and cultural disposition. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The imbalance between the capital and the nation has been a problem for a long time, but as we say, life goes on.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Until Trump<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">After Mr. Trump took office, the Washington establishment\u2014the Comey-McCabe FBI, opposition Democrats, the press\u2014asked the public to indulge the notion that the new U.S. president was a Russian pawn.<\/span> No matter that the Steele dossier, the day it was published, struck many as Russian fabulism. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The press published story after story based on anonymous sources that it might be real.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>It wasn\u2019t<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mr. Trump fired FBI Director\u00a0James Comey, and the public next got the Justice Department investigation led by\u00a0Robert Mueller, a figure from Beltway central casting, which led to the Mueller report, which amounted to almost nothing.<\/span> Then\u00a0Adam Schiff, the impeachments, etc., etc.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>In the event, the Democrats won back the presidency in 2020 when the incumbent Mr. Trump failed to put away an opponent who campaigned mostly from inside his house in Delaware.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong style=\"color: #333399;\">Trump takedown accomplished? <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Obviously not.<\/span> For the Swamp, Donald Trump is Dracula, and they won\u2019t rest until they\u2019ve put a stake through his heart.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Which brings us to the hard part\u2014Mr. Trump himself.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong style=\"color: #333399;\">This incident may push the former president into the Republican nomination race, running\u2014with evidence\u2014against the Swamp\u2019s institutional corruption. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Within hours, Mr. Trump\u2019s organization posted a\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a class=\"wsj-1h1us5y-StyledLink exk4ewm0\" style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PTuTp6PPeRM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferer\" data-type=\"link\">3\u00bd-minute campaign-style video<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0about a \u201cnation in decline.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong style=\"color: #333399;\">A second Trump term <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>isn\u2019t the last thing<\/em><\/span> this country needs. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">But it\u2019s about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>second to last<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The raid on Mar-a-Lago proves that Trump Derangement Syndrome won\u2019t go away until Mr. Trump is out of elective politics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wsj-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Trump II <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>would not<\/em><\/span> be a replay of Trump I, a more substantive, policy-driven presidency than his critics will admit.<\/span> Trump II would be a <span style=\"text-decoration:
