It’s Friday, September 9th, 2022…but before beginning, we offer two brief thoughts from former SecDef Deputy Assistant Amber Smith on the occasion of the recent letter enumerating\u00a016 thoughts dealing with the chain of command, political pressure, and civilian control of the U.S. military<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a>\u00a0signed by the likes of Ash Carter, Mark Esper, Bob Gates, Chuck Hagel, Jim Mattis, Leon Panetta, Martin Dempsey, Joseph Dunford, and Peter Pace:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It\u2019s completely hypocritical<\/em><\/span> for these former Defense Secretaries and [Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff] to preach about how important civ-mil relations are while setting the stage for using military leaders and officials to undermine the president.<\/span>\u00a0They are getting ready for Trump\u2019s second term.”<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

“Additionally, those who penned this letter are complicit<\/em><\/span> with the deterioration of trust and the breakdown in the relationship between the military and civilians they speak of.\u00a0They are essentially raising the alarm for an environment they helped create<\/em><\/span>.”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Talk about trying to shut the barn door after deliberately letting the horse out.\u00a0 Put another way, they’re trying to cover their tracks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Suspect in Memphis Shooting Spree Previously Served Less Than One Year for Killing<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n

“Police arrested a suspect Wednesday night in a\u00a0shooting spree\u00a0across Memphis, Tenn. that left four people dead and at least three others wounded.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Ezekiel Dejuan Kelly, 19, was detained around 9\u00a0p.m.<\/span>\u00a0local time after authorities chased after a stolen car he was driving, which he later crashed, according to Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn \u201cCJ\u201d Davis.<\/span> The alleged killer had a recidivist record, with\u00a0multiple felony charges pending against him<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A repeat offender, Kelly was charged with attempted first-degree murder but had it downgraded to aggravated assault in a plea bargain in April 2021, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said during a press briefing.<\/span> He was sentenced to three years in prison but was released eleven months later<\/em><\/span>, Strickland said.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>An arrest warrant on the charge of first-degree murder was already approved<\/em><\/span> for Kelly on Wednesday before<\/em><\/span> he committed the string of shootings, court records\u00a0obtained\u00a0by Memphis ABC affiliate WATN show.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

…<\/span>\u201cI want to assure<\/em><\/span> the public that we\u2019re all going to be working together to try to curb this senseless violence here in Memphis and Shelby County,\u201d Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner said at the press conference.<\/strong><\/span><\/span>“<\/p>\n

Sorry, but from where we sit, hardly anyone\u00a0in either the city of Memphis or<\/em><\/span> Shelby County seems to be doing much of anything\u00a0to prevent the\u00a0repeated depredations of the likes of Ezekiel Kelly and Cleotha Henderson<\/em><\/span><\/a>, and damn little when they apprehend them after the fact.<\/strong><\/p>\n
