color: #0000ff;\"><em>a cadre of armed FBI agents descended on the family home of one of the 11 pro-life activists targeted by Biden&#8217;s DOJ for peacefully protesting outside an abortion clinic in Tennessee<\/em><\/span><\/a>, while&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">These activists are still illegally protesting in front of the homes of the Supreme Court justices, particularly Justice Barrett <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hjaATa2yBv\">https:\/\/t.co\/hjaATa2yBv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mary Margaret Olohan (@MaryMargOlohan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaryMargOlohan\/status\/1578823531567386624?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 8, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>And do even get us going about people being jailed for strolling through the Capitol.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, here&#8217;s <em>The Gouge<\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Leading off the Monday chapter of <em>The Gouge<\/em>, Jim Geraghty\u00a0puts 46&#8217;s latest off-the-cuff, ill-advised assertion into proper perspective, as he warns&#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"article-header__title\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">\u2018<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/armageddon-bidens-blurting-is-a-danger-to-us-all\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=MJ_20221007&amp;utm_term=Jolt-Smart\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Armageddon\u2019: Biden\u2019s Blurting Is a Danger to Us All<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/6wbw19.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-104685\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/6wbw19.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/6wbw19.jpeg 420w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/6wbw19-300x171.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>My first thought is that if the president of the United States is genuinely worried that a regional conflict in eastern Europe is leading us toward a nuclear exchange and \u201cArmageddon\u201d \u2014 Joe Biden\u2019s words, not mine \u2014 then he probably should not announce it in off-the-cuff remarks during a private fundraiser for Democratic Senate candidates at the Murdochs\u2019 Manhattan home. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">That seems like the sort of thing that warrants an Oval Office prime-time address.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>And yet,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-nuclear-risk-1d0f1e40cff3a92c662c57f274ce0e25?utm_source=homepage&amp;utm_medium=TopNews&amp;utm_campaign=position_07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" testid=\"standard-link\" class=\"broken_link\">here we are<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/06\/politics\/armageddon-biden-putin-russia-nuclear-threats\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">As CNN dryly observed<\/a><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">: \u201cIt\u2019s striking for the President to speak so candidly and invoke Armageddon, particularly at a fundraiser, while his aides from the National Security Council to the State Department to the Pentagon have spoken in much more measured terms, saying they take the threats seriously but don\u2019t see movement on them from the Kremlin.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Striking<\/em><\/span>\u00a0is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>one<\/em><\/span> word for it, yes.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">This is another statement that is likely going to get walked back.<\/span> \u201cFollowing Biden\u2019s remarks, officials emphasized to CNN Thursday night that they had not seen <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>any<\/em><\/span> changes to Russia\u2019s nuclear stance.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Biden\u2019s specific words, according to the AP, were, \u201cI don\u2019t think there is any such a thing as the ability to easily use a tactical nuclear weapon and not end up with Armageddon.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/what-if-the-unthinkable-isnt-quite-so-unthinkable-anymore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"dynamic-link\">I suppose that is indeed one form of attempted deterrence<\/a><\/em><\/span>, but Biden\u2019s words indicate that the use of a Russian tactical nuke would <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>inexorably<\/em><\/span> lead to an American nuclear response.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Let us be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>exceptionally clear<\/em><\/span>: The U.S. may <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>want<\/em><\/span> to help Ukraine, but Ukraine is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not<\/em><\/span> a member of NATO, the U.S. is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not obligated<\/em><\/span> by treaty to defend Ukraine, and Ukraine is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not covered<\/em><\/span> by the U.S. nuclear umbrella.<\/span> A nuclear attack on Ukraine is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not<\/em><\/span> the same as a nuclear attack on the United States, and it should <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not<\/em><\/span> be treated as such. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The detonation of a Russian nuke on Ukrainian soil or off Ukraine\u2019s coast <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>would be<\/em><\/span> an outrage <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>and<\/em><\/span> a war crime.<\/span> It <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>would demand<\/em><\/span> the imposition of all kinds of serious repercussions on the Russian state. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">But an American nuclear counterstrike <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is not and should not<\/em><\/span> be one of those repercussions.<\/span> (We have all kinds of ways to hit Russia hard that do not involve nuclear weapons. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">For example,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/15\/us\/politics\/trump-cyber-russia-grid.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" testid=\"standard-link\" class=\"broken_link\">that\u2019s a nice power grid you\u2019ve got there<\/a><\/em><\/span>, Russia. It would be a shame if something happened to it.*)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>The U.S. cares a lot about what happens in the Russia\u2013Ukraine war. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">But we don\u2019t care so much that we\u2019re willing to lose some cities over it.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Biden\u2019s off-the-cuff \u201cArmageddon\u201d warning is in line with his past \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/a-gift-to-putin-bidens-disastrous-response-on-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"dynamic-link\">minor incursion<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u201d and \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/bidens-ad-libbing-becomes-more-dangerous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"dynamic-link\">for God\u2019s sake, this man cannot remain in power<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u201d gaffes. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Biden has never been a disciplined thinker or speaker, and now that he is almost 80, he often blurts out the first thing that pops into his head.<\/span> (Further evidence that Biden\u2019s remarks were completely spur-of-the-moment and not any kind of planned announcement or release:\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/10\/07\/remarks-by-president-biden-at-democratic-national-committee-reception\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" testid=\"standard-link\" class=\"broken_link\">Biden attended another Democratic fundraiser earlier in the day and didn\u2019t mention Russia at all<\/a><\/em><\/span>.)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Biden keeps saying things that are not U.S. government policy, and his staffers are then forced to rush out and insist that he didn\u2019t mean to say what he just said.<\/span> (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/06\/politics\/armageddon-biden-putin-russia-nuclear-threats\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">CNN reported<\/a><\/em><\/span>, \u201ca senior US government official expressed surprise at the President\u2019s remarks, saying there were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>no obvious signs<\/em><\/span> of an escalating threat from Russia.\u201d)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">There is a time and place for strategic ambiguity \u2014 for leaving your opponent unsure of what your actual \u201cred lines\u201d are and what you\u2019re really willing to do.<\/span> But the stakes don\u2019t get much higher than this, and miscalculations tend to have their own form of compounding interest: Each subsequent underestimation or overestimation of the opponent gets further from the mark.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>For what it\u2019s worth, United Kingdom defense secretary Ben Wallace recently declared that Putin is \u201chighly <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>un<\/em><\/span>likely\u201d to use nuclear weapons, but that he <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is<\/em><\/span> acting irrationally.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Looking back at NR\u2019s writing after the first month of the war,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2022\/03\/how-russias-war-on-ukraine-will-change-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"dynamic-link\">our John Hillen was prescient<\/a><\/em><\/span>, saying that, as much as we hated facing down a strong Putin, a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>weak<\/em><\/span> Putin could be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>even more dangerous<\/em><\/span>: \u201cAn embittered, embattled Putin in a declining nuclear state is a different actor from Putin the expansionist regional leader.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*Yes, I know,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/nice-new-pipeline-youve-got-there-shame-if-something-happened-to-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"dynamic-link\">the last time I wrote something like that<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>, a few months later, someone came along and\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;
