width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>In Carlson&#8217;s case, his adamant opposition to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>any<\/em><\/span> U.S. support for Ukraine in its defense against Putin&#8217;s unprovoked invasion leads him to conflate the cause of the EU&#8217;s energy shortage with sanctions against Russia rather than the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>incredibly<\/em><em> egregious unforced error<\/em><\/span> of allowing themselves to become dependent upon Russian energy <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>in the first place<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s the juice: Germany&#8217;s energy shortage is the result of Angela Merkel&#8217;s pointless green energy initiatives just as certainly as America&#8217;s dearth of domestic diesel is due directly to Biden&#8217;s deliberate disruption of the flow of our nation&#8217;s unlimited fossil fuels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hence a nation which sits atop the greatest supply of cheap energy on the planet effectively starves amidst plenty.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/biden-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105109\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/biden-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"353\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/biden-2.png 353w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/biden-2-252x300.png 252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yes, you most certainly did; text-decoration: underline;\">Georgia and the Democrats\u2019 Closed Systems<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/6yzhz2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105157\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/6yzhz2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/6yzhz2.jpeg 420w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/6yzhz2-300x248.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;&#8230;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>There is a theory that every group of human beings \u2013 organizations, companies, political movements, nations \u2014 is either \u201copen\u201d or \u201cclosed.\u201d <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">That is, they either have free and open communication \u2014 including dissent and assessment of flaws or problems \u2014 or they stifle disagreement and internal criticism.<\/span> Authoritarian regimes, cults, and companies run by tyrannical bosses are closed systems; hopefully, the organizations you belong to have leaders who will listen when someone says, \u201cHey, we\u2019ve got a problem here.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Closed systems often appear more stable and stronger in the short-term, but they\u2019re brittle and vulnerable in the long-term.<\/span> Real problems get downplayed, ignored, or denied; honest assessments and good ideas are never allowed to bubble up from the bottom.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Jon Stewart recently lamented that, \u201cThe way to understand the American legislative process is that it\u2019s so complex and arcane that nothing is possible. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">It\u2019<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">s a remarkably inefficient system that\u2019s not agile, and I think it\u2019s why democracy . . . is in some ways on the wane in the world.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ain\u2019t nothing as agile as authoritarian regimes.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Authoritarian regimes are \u201cagile\u201d in the sense that when the authoritarian orders a change, it is usually quickly carried out. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But authoritarian regimes prioritize keeping the authoritarian in power over all other interests \u2014 which usually erodes the regime\u2019s ability to address real problems.<\/span> It is the end of October 2022,\u00a0and the government of China is still locking workers inside of factories to control the spread of Covid. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vladimir Putin\u2019s regime is \u201cagile\u201d in terms of its ability to send more troops to the front in Ukraine, but not so agile in analyzing the mounting costs and shrinking benefits of invading its neighbor.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>In the end, the Democratic Party\u2019s internal politics are a closed system, or at least an insufficiently open one. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Leaders don\u2019t like hearing that a candidate that they like is, at minimum, a poor match for the state they\u2019re running in, and likely nowhere near as charming and charismatic as the party\u2019s leaders want to believe.<\/span> (As anyone who has criticized Donald Trump knows, the Democrats are not the only major political party that suffers from this dynamic.)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The people at the top wanted to believe that Stacey Abrams was a superstar, even a \u201csuperhero.\u201d<\/span> They didn\u2019t want to hear that she was the wrong candidate to run in a GOP-leaning state in a GOP-leaning year. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Beyond Warnock\u2019s reelection bid, this year, Georgia elects seven other statewide officials, 14 U.S. House members, all 56 state senators, all 180 state representatives, and numerous candidates for local offices, as well as voting on various ballot measures, etc.<\/span> If Abrams flops at the top of the ticket, it will have deleterious consequences for Democrats further down the ballot.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Democrats were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>warned<\/em><\/span> about Abrams\u2019s flaws as a candidate; text-decoration: underline;\">There is no such thing as a limited nuclear war in Europe\u00a0and Russia would be foolish to expect that it could contain a nuclear war on Ukrainian territory<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/download-5.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105148\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/download-5.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/download-5.jpeg 420w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/download-5-300x169.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;&#8230;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The problem with Russia\u2019s nuclear warnings is that neither Russia nor any other nuclear weapons state can maintain control over events once the nuclear threshold has been crossed.<\/span> Russian leaders may imagine that they can unleash a low-yield \u201ctactical\u201d nuclear weapon\u2014compared to \u201cstrategic\u201d nuclear weapons deployed on intercontinental launchers\u2014and regain a temporary advantage on the escalation ladder. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But the use of a nuclear weapon would not just be a military incident but a political game-changer.<\/span> The world will hold its breath since the reactions of Ukrainian and NATO political leaders are not necessarily going to be what Putin and his advisers expect.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nor will Russian political elites and the public necessarily rally around the flag in response to a nuclear weapon fired against Ukrainians.<\/span> Many Ukrainians have relatives in Russia and vice versa. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The people of Russia and Ukraine do not hate one another, only their governments do.<\/span> Many Russians will react with horror and disgust at nuclear first use in Ukraine and the mass exodus of Russians from their own country will grow larger in number as images of Armageddon dominate the media and social discourse.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Some contend that the Russian military has\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bomb-Presidents-Generals-History-Nuclear\/dp\/1982107294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adopted a rationale<\/a>\u00a0for nuclear first use based on the logic of \u201cescalate to de-escalate\u201d if a conflict appears to be going badly for Russia.<\/span> If so, it would be a mistake for Russia to apply this doctrine to the exigent circumstances in Ukraine. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">During the Cold War,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Escalation-Metaphors-Scenarios-Herman-Kahn\/dp\/1412811627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">numerous studies<\/a>\u00a0and war games\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Evolution-Nuclear-Strategy-Third\/dp\/0333972392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">examined the concept<\/a>\u00a0of limited\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Arms-Influence-Preface-Afterword-Lectures\/dp\/0300143370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nuclear war<\/a>\u00a0in Europe with varying sets of assumptions, role players, and outcomes. <\/span>For the most part, players had considerable difficulty\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/War-Controlling-Escalation-Richard-Smoke\/dp\/0674945956\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">managing the conflict<\/a>\u00a0before the fighting escalated to comprehensive attacks between the United States and the Soviet Union.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Less is known about Soviet-era war games but if Russia expects to manage escalation after nuclear first use they are likely to be disappointed.<\/span> Nuclear escalation control is not like a minuet or a waltz; it resembles more of a mosh pit. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Optimism assumes that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Strategic-Command-Control-Bruce-Blair\/dp\/0815709811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">command and control systems<\/a>\u00a0will still work as expected; that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/thebulletin.org\/premium\/2020-01\/loose-cannons-the-president-and-us-nuclear-posture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leaders and their advisers<\/a>\u00a0will keep their heads; that panic and mass migration will not throw European countries into political and social turmoil; and that infrastructure on which states depend for day-to-day functions (manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, fuel, power supplies) will be viable even in the face of mass destruction.<\/span> There is also the question of whether enlisted personnel in the Russian military, already unhappy about the entire enterprise in Ukraine, will move forward into irradiated wastelands resembling Chernobyl on steroids.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">NATO\u2019s political and military unity is now as important as it has ever been.<\/span> Putin\u2019s nuclear saber-rattling should be taken seriously but it should not divide the United States from its European allies. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">There is no such thing as a limited nuclear war in Europe\u00a0and Russia would be foolish to expect that it could contain a nuclear war on Ukrainian territory.<\/span> Putin should stop imitating Kim Jong-un and revisit the example of Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev with respect to nuclear war and deterrence. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Normalizing Armageddon invites misperception, inadvertent escalation, and unthinkable destruction.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unfortunately, the authors&#8217; conclusion <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>assumes<\/em><\/span> Putin, like his ChiCom counterpart, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>will act rationally<\/em><\/span> when threatened with the loss of the absolute power they&#8217;ve so ruthlessly accumulated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In a related item at <em>Unherd.com<\/em>, Aris Roussinos suggests <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/thepost\/is-putin-scaling-down-his-war-aims\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em>targeting Ukraine&#8217;s power grid may be an indication Putin may be scaling back his goals of his unprovoked invasion<\/em><\/span><\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;&#8230;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Back in February, Putin ordered lightly-armed troops to invade much of Ukraine, leaving the country\u2019s infrastructure intact in the seeming belief the war would end in days with a puppet government installed. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In destroying Ukraine\u2019s power grid, Putin is signalling, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>perhaps unintentionally<\/em><\/span>, acceptance that his broadest ambitions will not be realised.<\/span> Ukraine\u2019s civilian infrastructure is now a target precisely because the country will not become part of Russia\u2019s sphere of influence. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The escalation of the bombing is in its own way <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>a quiet admission of defeat<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Though Mad Vlad doesn&#8217;t strike us as someone to go gently into that good night.\u00a0 Besides, you know what they say about cornered animals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking of animals, <em>Best of the Web<\/em>\u00a0offers an update on&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"css-1hch5ce-StyledHeadline e1ipbpvp0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/communist-covid-lockdowns-and-labs-11667234326?mod=djemBestOfTheWeb\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; in the fall of 2019, the dispatches took a darker turn.<\/span> They referenced inhumane working conditions and \u201chidden safety dangers.\u201d <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">On <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">November 12 of that year<\/span>, a dispatch by party branch members at the [biosafety level-4] laboratory <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">appeared to reference a biosecurity breach<\/span>.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em class=\"css-i6hrxa-Italic e1i5tkwa0\" data-type=\"emphasis\">once you have opened the stored test tubes, it is just as if having opened Pandora\u2019s Box. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">These viruses come without a shadow and leave without a trace.<\/span> Although [we have] various preventive and protective measures, it is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nevertheless necessary for lab personnel to operate very cautiously to avoid operational errors that give rise to dangers<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Every time this has happened, the members of the Zhengdian Lab [BSL4] Party Branch have always run to the frontline, and they have taken real action to mobilize and motivate other research personnel.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Reid studied the words intently. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Was this a reference to past accidents?<\/span> An admission of an ongoing crisis? <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">A general recognition of hazardous practices?<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Or all of the above<\/em><\/span>? Reading between the lines, Reid concluded, \u201cThey are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>almost<\/em><\/span> saying they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>know<\/em><\/span> Beijing is about to come down and scream at them.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Ms. Eban and Mr. Kao continue:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>Vanity Fair and ProPublica downloaded more than 500 documents from the WIV website, including party branch dispatches from 2017 to the present. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">To assess Reid\u2019s interpretation, we sent key documents to experts on [Chinese Communist Party] communications.<\/span> They told us that the WIV dispatches <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">did indeed signal that the institute faced an acute safety emergency in November 2019<\/span>; inability to act, rather their selective refusal to enforce existing laws.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Since we&#8217;re on the subject of the homeless, a<\/strong><strong>re we the only one who views\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.com\/tipsheet\/mattvespa\/2022\/10\/29\/did-a-911-call-refer-to-the-pelosi-home-intruder-as-a-friend-n2615203\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;
