color: #0000ff;\"><em>a good number of House Republicans say they&#8217;re prepared to vote against him for Speaker<\/em><\/span><\/a> unless their demands for significant rules changes and major spending cuts are met.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As Romina Boccia notes at <em>NRO<\/em>, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2022\/12\/its-time-for-congress-to-ban-earmarks\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=NR%20Daily%20Monday%20through%20Friday%202022-12-01&amp;utm_term=NRDaily-Smart\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>it&#8217;s high time Congress put an end to earmarks<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span>&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>permanently<\/em><\/span>!\u00a0 And there&#8217;s no chance of Kevin McCarthy&#8217;s the least bit interested in doing so, for, as the <em>Journal<\/em>&#8216;s Kim Strassel records, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-gop-spending-poseurs-budget-house-republicans-leader-congress-taxpayer-federalism-wasteful-11669934943\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em>he, along with at least 157 other members of the House GOP, are spending poseurs<\/em><\/span><\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Self-awareness isn\u2019t one of the modern GOP\u2019s strong suits, as House Republicans proved again this week. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">If the party is still confused as to why voters didn\u2019t trust them in greater numbers, it might consider that it isn\u2019t trustworthy.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Leader\u00a0Kevin McCarthy\u00a0in September unveiled to great fanfare the party\u2019s Commitment to America, which vowed that Republicans would \u201ccurb wasteful government spending\u201d that feeds inflation and the national debt. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Hundreds of Republican candidates stormed their districts, waving Commitment pocket cards and pronouncing on fiscal discipline and oversight.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Then came Wednesday\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>first test<\/em> <\/span>of whether this was all hot air, and it turns out <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>a fleet of dirigibles wouldn\u2019t have held the gas<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">California Rep.\u00a0Tom McClintock\u00a0moved to repeal the recent party rule allowing earmarks. The caucus routed his motion, voting it down <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>158-52<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Commitment to America? <span style=\"color: #333399;\">More like Commitment to Spoils<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s the juice: While earmarks don&#8217;t necessarily put money directly into a Congressman&#8217;s pocket, they do contribute substantially to an individuals odds of reelection.\u00a0 Though it&#8217;s clear the vast majority of these civic-minded, dedicated public servants don&#8217;t leave Congress as millionaires by chance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, here&#8217;s <em>The Gouge<\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First up on the last <em>Gouge<\/em> of the week, another far wiser and infinitely more Conservative McCarthy, that being Andy, recounts&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"article-header__title\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2022\/11\/the-oath-keepers-verdicts-correct-the-record-on-january-6\/?bypass_key=MExSdFF2a0JieXJQQXo0SHpNZ0hWUT09Ojphbk5JYzNFMlVuTmtjelZtTm5NemFYWlRXa0ZTUVQwOQ%3D%3D&amp;utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=NR%20Daily%20Monday%20through%20Friday%202022-11-30&amp;utm_term=NRDaily-Smart\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Oath Keepers Verdicts Correct the Record on January 6<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n<h3 class=\"article-header__subtitle\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2022\/11\/the-oath-keepers-verdicts-correct-the-record-on-january-6\/?bypass_key=MExSdFF2a0JieXJQQXo0SHpNZ0hWUT09Ojphbk5JYzNFMlVuTmtjelZtTm5NemFYWlRXa0ZTUVQwOQ%3D%3D&amp;utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=NR%20Daily%20Monday%20through%20Friday%202022-11-30&amp;utm_term=NRDaily-Smart\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The jury concludes that there was a spontaneous riot at the Capitol, rather than an elaborate plot to make war on the United States<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/capitol-hill-protests-010621-8-copy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105574\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/capitol-hill-protests-010621-8-copy.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/capitol-hill-protests-010621-8-copy.png 420w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/capitol-hill-protests-010621-8-copy-300x175.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"drop\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>I<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span class=\"small_caps\">t<\/span>\u00a0wasn\u2019t an elaborate, multilayered plot. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">It wasn\u2019t democracy hanging by a thread.<\/span> It was a mob run amok, a riot. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">It was dangerous for those on the scene, and it was notorious because it happened at the Capitol instead of, say, on the streets of Minneapolis.<\/span> But it was a spontaneous, chaotic, nearly pointless tantrum that had no chance of achieving even the nebulous, short-term aim of preventing Congress from counting state-certified electoral votes, much less of overthrowing America\u2019s constitutional order.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Oh, and to hear prosecutors tell the story of January 6, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Donald Trump had precious little to do with the whole thing<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>These are the only logical conclusions to draw from the verdicts returned Tuesday afternoon by a jury in deep blue Washington, D.C. T<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">he panel acquitted three of the five Oath Keeper defendants whom the Justice Department overheatedly charged with\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/18\/2384\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">seditious conspiracy<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 the crime of agreeing to levy war against the United States, or to forcibly oppose its authority.<\/span> The jury did return seditious-conspiracy convictions against the Oath Keepers\u2019 national leader, Stewart Rhodes, and his confidant, Kelly Meggs, who headed up the loose-knit organization\u2019s Florida chapter.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Yet jurors acquitted Rhodes on a charge of conspiracy to disrupt the January 6 joint session of Congress \u2014 the objective that, according to prosecutors, drove the seditious conspiracy.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>On the other hand, all five defendants \u2014 Rhodes and Meggs, along with Kenneth Harrelson, Jessica Watkins, and Thomas Caldwell \u2014 were convicted of what should have been the main charge in the case:\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the actual obstruction of a congressional proceeding<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Like the superfluous seditious-conspiracy charges, obstruction carries a potential penalty of 20 years\u2019 imprisonment; by itself, it would have provided more-than-adequate punishment for the defendants\u2019 actions.<\/span> Unlike conspiracy, actual obstruction need not entail a plan, much less a serpentine scheme to destroy our republic. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Again, it was a better fit for what happened at the Capitol on January 6, which was chaos.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>The verdicts seem irrational, but that is because the prosecution was irrational<\/strong><\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>If this kangaroo court prove one thing it&#8217;s that for all Trump&#8217;s faults, which are numerous, inciting insurrection wasn&#8217;t among them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Next, though this latest offering from the <em>Journal<\/em>&#8216;s Holman Jenkins is well worth your time&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"crawler css-bsrkcm-Box e1vnmyci0\">\n<h1 class=\"css-1hch5ce-StyledHeadline e1ipbpvp0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff0000;\">Zero-Covid and Xi Jinping\u2019s Deal With the Devil<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"css-mosdo-Dek-Dek e1jnru6p0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">China\u2019s lockdown strategy was aimed at helping a new Mao consolidate power<\/span>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>I doubt Mr. Xi drinks deeply of the mentality of the Western media, whose zero-Covid delusions amounted to indulgence in the prerogative of the harlot through the ages. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Western politicians weren\u2019t asking what made the most sense for society, but what made the most sense for themselves at a specific moment, in terms of career preservation.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>President Trump extended his social-distancing guidance in March 2020 based on polls that showed the public, however unrealistically, wanted and expected to be spared the virus altogether<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Those who fail to grasp almost all our completely counterproductive response to the genetically-altered coronavirus which was either loosed or slipped loose from a government lab in Wuhan, China was based on George Wallace\u2019s 1963 declaration urging \u201csegregation now, segregation forever.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>They will, instead, be referring to the last five years, in which colleges have begun\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/woke-college-are-backing-segregation-now-tomorrow-and-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"dynamic-link\">separating students by race<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>\u00a0out of concern that it might damage the \u201cmental health\u201d of non-white students if they are forced to interact with white students.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>What was once discarded as an embarrassing remnant of the Jim Crow era has now become de rigueur on college campuses, returning in the form of \u201caffinity groups,\u201d racially separate housing arrangements, and segregated theatrical
