{"id":106422,"date":"2023-01-12T19:11:17","date_gmt":"2023-01-13T00:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/?p=106422"},"modified":"2023-01-12T19:11:26","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T00:11:26","slug":"the-daily-gouge-archive-wednesday-january-11th-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/?p=106422","title":{"rendered":"The Daily Gouge Archive, Wednesday, January 11th, 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>It&#8217;s Wednesday, January 11th, 2023&#8230;but before we begin, we came across this quote from an episode of <em>Dr. Phil <\/em><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/dr-phil-schools-guest-reality-defunding-police-someone-end-9-1-1\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">entitled &#8220;Defunding the Police: A Failure or a Fallacy<\/span><\/a><\/em>? <\/span>in which one Mychal Denzel Smith &#8220;took a stance so controversial on policing, it provoked a heated reaction from the host himself&#8221;:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;<em>When I say, \u2018Oh I don\u2019t believe that there&#8217;s a need for police,&#8217; what I&#8217;m saying is that there has been so little investment in creating the conditions under which police would not be necessary.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>People are the creations of the society in which they live in. If you are a society that has such massive inequality, and you are a society that is based on racial and gendered hierarchies, and you are a society that deprives people of the resources that they need to live &#8211; talking about housing, clean water, food, all of these things that are part of an equitable society, you\u2019re talking about people that will do desperate things in order to survive<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Though our response is an emphatic&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0xHe1zkABYo?start=87&amp;end=89&amp;\" width=\"420\" height=\"235\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8230;Dr. Phil actually agreed with everything Smith said, which the exception of defunding the police <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>today<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Smith&#8217;s asinine assertions and Dr. Phil&#8217;s ignorance of the facts to the contrary notwithstanding, since 1965, the federal government has spent $<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">22 trillion<\/span><\/em>&#8230;that&#8217;s $22 with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>twelve 0s<\/em><\/span> after it&#8230;fruitlessly fighting poverty, a figure <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>exclusive<\/em><\/span> of Social Security and Medicare expenditures.\u00a0 And it hasn&#8217;t made even <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>minimal<\/em><\/span> impact on poverty.\u00a0 Today, America&#8217;s poor, the fattest on the planet, live in conditions many relatively well-to-do residents of the Third World would envy, having easy access to, among other programs:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1. Food Assistance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2. Health Insurance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3. Medicaid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>4. Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>5. Housing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>6. Financial Assistance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>7. Welfare<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>8. Head Start (free preschool)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>9. Federal Pell Grant Program (free college tuition assistance)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>10. The Lifeline and Affordable Connectivity Programs (free broadband, hence\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/standupwireless.com\/blog-9-free-things-for-low-income-families-a-government-assistance-guide\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Stand Up Wireless\u00a0as the source of our list<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>And let&#8217;s not forget <a href=\"https:\/\/www.obamaphone.com\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em>free smart phones<\/em><\/span><\/a>\u00a0with which to access their &#8220;free&#8221; internet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>As for this charlatan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_contract\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em>regurgitation of Jean-Jacques Rousseau&#8217;s claptrap criminals are a creation of society<\/em><\/span><\/a>, both Dr. Phil and Smith conveniently ignore the single biggest determinant of poverty and criminal activity in America: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>single motherhood<\/em><\/span>!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s the juice: It&#8217;s yet one more example of life imitating art, in this case, Colonel Jessup&#8217;s legendary courtroom soliloquy from <em>A Few Good Men<\/em>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9FnO3igOkOk?start=78&amp;end=83&amp;\" width=\"420\" height=\"235\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>The &#8220;you&#8221; in this case being Dr. Phil and Mr. Smith, both of who undoubtedly <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>KNOW<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/shorts\/C5IZjI_p6-Q?feature=share\"><em>single motherhood produces poverty, prison and every other kind of social ill<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span>, but to admit such would frame the problem as one of individual choices and actions rather than a systemically-racist, hierarchical, heartless society.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, here&#8217;s <em>The Gouge<\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First up, courtesy of the legendary KaCHING!, the <em>WSJ<\/em>&#8216;s Andy Kessler insightfully identifies a group to which many, if not all of us, may already unwittingly belong:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"crawler css-bsrkcm-Box e1vnmyci0\">\n<h1 class=\"css-1hch5ce-StyledHeadline e1ipbpvp0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-voting-bloc-against-bossiness-dontell-libertarian-freedom-covid-education-language-silicon-valley-11673195159?st=nfppbhhzmxsnfzs&amp;reflink=share_mobilewebshare\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900; text-decoration: underline;\">The Voting Bloc Against Bossiness<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n<h3 class=\"css-mosdo-Dek-Dek e1jnru6p0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" tell me what to do, hence the name.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Their telltale sign is an obvious case of ODD.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">What\u2019s that?<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Oppositional defiant disorder, which, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, is a behavior disorder, often in children who \u201care uncooperative, defiant, and hostile toward peers, parents, teachers, and other authority figures.\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Yeah, I\u2019ve got that.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Also add: Don\u2019t tell me what to say, to think, to pay.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Backlash was inevitable against the metastatic absurdity.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Use only paper straws.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Don\u2019t tell me what to do.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">You can\u2019t say \u201cmaster bedroom\u201d anymore.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Oh yes I can.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">That 6-foot-tall dude winning all the NCAA women\u2019s swimming meets is really a woman.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">I don\u2019t think so.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Every threat is existential.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Maybe to you.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">No abortions ever.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">What?<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Your taxes pay people not to work.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Make it stop!<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Tea partiers and red-hatted MAGA supporters pushed back against Obama-era bossiness.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">They didn\u2019t want high taxes to pay for open-border welfare, gun confiscation or being woke poked.<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"> Heck, they even supported a blundering bloviator for president.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">That\u2019s how desperate their Dontell dedication was.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Note, there is a fine distinction between the Doncares (I don\u2019t care), the Leavmis (leave me alone), and the Dontells.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">The first two groups rarely vote.<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"> But Dontells <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>vote<\/em><\/span> in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>droves<\/em><\/span>, on both sides of the aisle.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Amazingly, the whole Dontell thing still comes as a huge surprise to self-important city dwellers on both coasts.<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"> Yes, most big-city progressives like to be dominated and enjoy being told what to do.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Walk\/Don\u2019t Walk.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Mind the gap.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Wait in long lines.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Alternate-side-of-the-street parking regulations.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Calorie counts in doughnut shops.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Confiscatory taxes.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">New York\u2019s (unconstitutional) ban on large sodas.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">San Francisco\u2019s ban on Happy Meals.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">The seemingly mandatory use of words such as \u201cpositionality\u201d and \u201cperformative\u201d in conversation.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Liberals, implied in the name, say they are for freedom, but are they?<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">The progressive wing is full of authoritarians telling others what to do or how to think: America is a racist country.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Wear a mask.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Limit charter schools.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Bees are fish (in California).<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">\u201cA drag queen for every school\u201d (Michigan\u2019s attorney general\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a class=\"css-1h1us5y-StyledLink exk4ewm0\" style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/wwmt.com\/news\/local\/drag-queens-should-be-in-every-school-michigan-ag-says-at-conference-report-claims-attorney-general-dana-nessel-pride-trans-transgender-students-kids-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferer\" data-type=\"link\">promises<\/a><\/em><\/span>).<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">ESG.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">CRT.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">DEI.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">I could go on.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Meanwhile, Dontells are fed up with submission.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Many Dontells rally around the yellow Gadsden flag with its coiled rattlesnake and declaration \u201cDon\u2019t Tread on Me.\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">In 2016 a controversy raged over whether the Gadsden flag was racist.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Really?<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">There\u2019s that insulting implicit bias again.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Dontells <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>hate<\/em><\/span> the thought police.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">It\u2019s about freedom.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Are Dontells libertarians?<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Not necessarily.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">There is a deeper psychology of freedom that runs through society, way beyond\u00a0Ayn Rand\u00a0fanatics or Cato Institute donors or even crypto-crazies.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">This is especially true in Silicon Valley, even though its residents won\u2019t admit it.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Disruption almost by definition is not listening to what others tell you to do.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">We no longer live in a nanny state, but a bossy state.<\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\"> You must express the prevailing opinion or face mockery.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Do this, don\u2019t do that.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Instead, let\u2019s eliminate ODD in our lifetime.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">The Dontells\u2019 philosophy is simple: How about you live your life, and I\u2019ll live mine.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Don\u2019t tell me what to do, say, think or pay.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Oh yeah, and don\u2019t tread on me\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>because I vote<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>As we observed on our recent trip to the Lone Star State, Texas is BRIMMING with Dontells.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In a related item, <em>NRO<\/em>&#8216;s Charley Cook provides&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"article-header__title\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">It falls so far outside the federal government\u2019s purview that it doesn\u2019t even merit a counterargument<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/7710f8.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-106436\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/7710f8.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/7710f8.jpeg 420w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/7710f8-300x175.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>One\u00a0could advance any number of compelling arguments against the Biden administration\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/09\/biden-administration-reportedly-weighing-national-ban-on-gas-stoves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">reported desire<\/a>\u00a0to institute a nationwide ban on gas stoves. <span style=\"color: #808080;\">One could note that such prohibitions are clearly not within the federal government\u2019s constitutional powers.<\/span> One could question the president\u2019s priorities in a time of inflation and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dbusiness.com\/daily-news\/survey-burnout-hits-consumer-confidence-as-financial-troubles-grow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" testid=\"standard-link\" class=\"broken_link\">consumer alarm<\/a>. <span style=\"color: #808080;\">One could observe that the study that has led the administration to consider outlawing gas stoves is ridiculously \u2014\u00a0<a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aga.org\/news\/news-releases\/statement-aga-concerned-by-methodology-of-new-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">and deliberately<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 flawed.<\/span> One could even ask how such a measure \u2014 which would make many forms of ethnic cooking more difficult \u2014 could be squared with all that fashionable talk of systemic implicit racial bias. <span style=\"color: #808080;\">And yet to offer any of these objections would ultimately be counterproductive, insofar as it would signal an acceptance of the premise underlying the policy, which is that this is the sort of matter that a free people should expect their federal government to superintend.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>I do not accept this premise, and, as a result, I must offer up a response wholly different from the ones above. <span style=\"color: #808080;\">Namely:\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Bugger off<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>That\u2019s right. <span style=\"color: #808080;\">The correct response here is a rather simple one, all told: Go away.<\/span> Leave us alone. <span style=\"color: #808080;\">Stick your ludicrous propositions where the sun don\u2019t shine.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: built features to maximize users\u2019 time on their sites, and they use complex algorithms, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to \u201cexploit the neurophysiology of the brain\u2019s reward systems to keep users coming back, coming back frequently, and staying on the respective platforms for as long as possible.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\">The lawsuit alleges that school districts in Seattle and across the country \u201care uniquely harmed by the current districts have had to hire additional mental-health staff, develop new mental-health resources, train teachers to help students with their mental health, increase disciplinary services, and repair
