According to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/education\/3975959-one-in-four-high-school-students-identify-as-lgbtq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" testid=\"standard-link\" class=\"broken_link\">new data reported in\u00a0The Hill<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span>, the actual percentage of LGBT young Americans is closer to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>25\u201326 percent<\/em><\/span><\/strong>. For rather obvious reasons, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>this is worth discussing<\/em><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">First, let\u2019s review the numbers themselves. According to figures originally sourced from the Orwellian-sounding Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) administered by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 75 percent or so of American high-school students now identify as heterosexual. Roughly 3 percent \u2014 combined \u2014 ID as gay and lesbian, while 12.2 percent identify as bisexual, 5.2 percent as \u201cquestioning,\u201d and 3.9 percent as \u201cother\u201d (trans, nonbinary, etc. would presumably fall here). In what may be a measure of reading comprehension rather than sexual openness, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>fully 1.8 percent<\/em><\/span><\/strong> of responding young scholars said that they <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">could not understand the question<\/span><\/em><\/strong>. Overall, \u201cthe number of LGBTQ students went from <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>11% in 2015 to 26% in 2021<\/em><\/span><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Several things are notable here. Obviously, there is simply <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>no genetic or biological explanation<\/em><\/span><\/strong> for a surge like this one. The percentage of Baby Boomers who identify as LGBT is <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>2.7 percent<\/em><\/span><\/strong>, and the main change in the \u201cstock\u201d of the United States since the 1960s and 1970s has been large-scale in-migration of Latinos from some of the world\u2019s more conservative Catholic societies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Popular \u201cculturalist\u201d explanations like \u201cincreased social tolerance for gays\u201d or \u201cmore exposure to pornography\u201d also basically fail. It seems wildly unlikely that either of those variables has shifted upward by 240 percent since 2015 (not 1966) alongside the growth of the non-straight population. Further, and importantly, mass rates of LGBT identification seem confined almost entirely to young folx \u2014 while one would expect a simple response to greater tolerance to involve citizens of every age.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">One clue about what\u2019s going on here is provided by the fact that a lot of today\u2019s \u201cqueer youth\u201d don\u2019t seem to be very gay\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>in practice<\/em><\/span><\/strong>. As noted above, only <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>3.2 percent<\/em><\/span><\/strong> of today\u2019s young people say they are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>primarily<\/em><\/strong><\/span> same-sex attracted \u2014 a figure very much on par with many recorded in the past. That group is outnumbered about <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>four to one<\/em><\/span><\/strong> by the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>self-declared<\/em><\/span><\/strong> bisexuals. For that matter, a surprisingly large chunk of today\u2019s heavily female cohort of \u201cbisexuals\u201d seems to be spaghetti-straight <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>in practice<\/em><\/span><\/strong>. According to data from the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cspicenter.com\/p\/born-this-way-the-rise-of-lgbt-as-a-social-and-political-identity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">Center for the Study of Partisanship and Ideology<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>55 percent<\/em><\/span><\/strong> of self-declared bisexual women under age 30 have had <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>only heterosexual sex<\/em><\/span><\/strong> (if sometimes quite a lot of it) in the recent past.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This 55 percent figure represents a 412 percent increase in \u2014 if you will \u2014 bisexual heterosexuality since just 2010, when the \u201cmen only\u201d figure recorded for the identical cohort of women was only 13.3 percent. Further complicating this picture is the fact that sexually active people of any kind are rapidly becoming a minority among the young. According to the 2021 YRBSS report, the percentage of American high-school students who have ever had sex fell from almost <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>60 percent in 1991 to 30 percent in 2021<\/em><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The percentage who are regularly sexually active is now <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>21 percent<\/em><\/span><\/strong>. Likely, many high-school and college students describing themselves with terms like \u201cgleefully poly-queer\u201d have <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>never<\/em><\/span><\/strong> even French-kissed <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>anyone<\/em><\/span><\/strong>, of <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">any sex<\/span><\/em><\/strong>. Indeed, entire fairly popular modern identities \u2014 \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/resources\/article\/understanding-asexuality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">asexual<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>,\u201d \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtqnation.com\/2022\/06\/all-about-the-demisexual-flag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">demisexual<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u201d \u2014 are based around the theme of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>never or rarely having sex<\/em><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So, what are we to make of all this? Responding to\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheRabbitHole84\/status\/1631090607753138176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">a viral Twitter drop<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0of the CPSI data by the popular social-media account the Rabbit Hole (which focuses on statistics), Andrew Sullivan, the well-known gay columnist,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sullydish\/status\/1631328024560902148\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">gave one logical answer<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>: \u201cThe most <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>plausible explanation<\/em><\/span><\/strong> is that everyone <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>wants<\/em><\/span><\/strong> to be \u2018LGBTQ+\u2019 now \u2014 so <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">why not lie and be cool<\/span><\/em><\/strong>? Only problem is that <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">this<\/span><\/em><\/strong> makes the \u2018LGBTQ+\u2019 community <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>majority straight<\/em><\/span><\/strong>.\u201d Sullivan was blunt and even a little harsh, but his point is clear. If we all <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>set politics aside and simply look at the data<\/em><\/span><\/strong>, it seems <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>empirically obvious<\/em><\/span><\/strong> that the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>best explanation<\/em><\/span><\/strong> for today\u2019s patterns of sexual identification is what my fellow big-domes often call <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>social contagion<\/em><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Not only is there already <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>significant evidence<\/em><\/span><\/strong> of contagion (\u201crapid onset gender dysphoria,\u201d etc.) occurring specifically within the context of \u201cgender\u201d and sexual identity, this is obviously also something our society and others witnessed during the growth of the great youth \u201cscenes\u201d such as goth and rave, the spread of\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/withinhealth.com\/learn\/articles\/harmful-outcomes-of-the-pro-ana-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">negative<\/a>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Promotion_of_anorexia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">social trends<\/a>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17258173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">like anorexia<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>, and even the post-1960s popularization and acceptance of teen sex itself. I\u2019m only partly joking when I say that a 400 percent surge in the number of virgins with boyfriends who identify as \u201ctotes bisexual\u201d appears to fit some previous patterns to a T.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And, dead seriously, there is a rather obvious reason why we would be seeing\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>this<\/em><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0pattern <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">now<\/span><\/em><\/strong>. In an era when multiple major left-wing organizations use the \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dsausa.org\/organize\/respectful_discussion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">progressive stack<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u201d ranking of victimization to decide which speakers to prioritize, and I myself was able to write a best-selling\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hate-Crime-Hoax-Lefts-Campaign\/dp\/1621577783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">book about people who seek notoriety by faking racial crimes<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>, <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">large premiums often attach to being considered unique (or different) and even \u201coppressed<\/span><\/em><\/strong>.\u201d At such a moment, it isn\u2019t hard to see why students and other young people, when given the option to move away from mundane middle-class white status and identify as something \u00e0 la \u201cenby x ace\u201d (look it up), often do so. (In the U.S. and U.K., the demographics of atypical gender and sexual orientation seem to perfectly match this scenario. For example, in a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/buttonslives\/status\/1649565929729081344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">recent study<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0of young people who identified as transgender, nonbinary, gender queer, etc., 34 of 36 respondents were white, 80 percent were female, and almost all seem to have been middle-class.) The rapid spread of \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/transstudent.org\/gender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">Gender Unicorn<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u201d\u2013style public-school lessons detailing the full range of possible sexual orientations and \u201cgenders\u201d has likely <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not slowed<\/em><\/span><\/strong> this trend down.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What\u2019s a parent to do about these trends? At the most basic and surface level of analysis, not much. There\u2019s nothing wildly wrong with being bisexual (demisexual might well be the dream of fathers of girls), and a huge number of the kids claiming these edgy-sounding identities aren\u2019t actually saying much \u2014 the percentage of people who truly are preferentially gay likely hasn\u2019t changed at all. Speaking as a cynic, I\u2019d say probably the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>worst<\/em><\/span><\/strong> way to prevent your teenage daughter or son from participating in a trend you aren\u2019t thrilled about is to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>get hysterical enough about it to make it seem rebelliously cool<\/em><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">At a deeper level, two tips do come to mind. First \u2014 and this applies more in the context of gender than of sexuality but is important \u2014 it is a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>hellaciously bad idea<\/em><\/span><\/strong> to let <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>any minor child make permanent physical changes to his or her body on the basis of an identity that, statistically, the kid will very likely not hold in ten years<\/em><\/span><\/strong>. Second, there is a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>lot<\/em><\/span><\/strong> to be said for <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>normalizing normalcy inside your home<\/em><\/span><\/strong>.
