“In April 2014, America was transfixed by an armed standoff in the Nevada desert. On one<\/em><\/span> side was a collection of dangerous, out-of-control armed men who were deliberately provocative, prone to saying unhinged things in a single-minded quest to destroy their enemies, and who lied time and again to cover their misdeeds<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

On the other<\/em><\/span> side was Cliven Bundy<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If you think that\u2019s an unfair and inflammatory attack on the federal government, consider that yesterday<\/span> a federal judge<\/span>, Obama appointee Gloria Navarro<\/span>, dismissed the federal government\u2019s criminal case against Bundy and two of his sons on the basis that the government was guilty of \u201cflagrant misconduct\u201d in the trial<\/span>. Its conduct was so<\/span> \u201coutrageous\u201d that \u201cno lesser remedy\u201d than dismissal with prejudice \u201cis sufficient<\/span><\/span><\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The government<\/em><\/span>, you see, lied<\/em><\/span>. It withheld evidence<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> It concealed the truth from the court and from the American people<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span> To say this isn\u2019t to whitewash Bundy\u2019s misdeeds. He broke the law. He defied the government without any legal justification, and his own conduct helped precipitate a crisis that could have led to a horrible tragedy.<\/p>\n

Bundy was wrong<\/span><\/em>. But so was the government<\/span>, and the government\u2019s conduct<\/span>, given its enormous power over the lives and liberty of its citizens, was far<\/span> more troubling than anything<\/span> Bundy did<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>…”<\/p>\n

In other words, while Bundy was wrong, the federal government was far<\/em><\/span> wronger.\u00a0 Boys and girls, can you say “Ruby Ridge”…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, had commissioned the Government Accountability Office report to look into how online private dealers might be selling guns to people not allowed to have them.<\/span>\u00a0(We’re assuming these fools didn’t foot the bill for this fiasco out of their personal funds!)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Their efforts were based on a 2016 report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which claimed that \u201canonymity of the internet makes it an ideal means for prohibited individuals to obtain illegal firearms.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

…Over the course of the two-and-a-half year investigation, agents tried to buy firearms illegally on the \u201cSurface Web\u201d and the \u201cDark Web<\/em>,\u201d generally by sharing their status as \u201cprohibited individuals\u201d or trying to buy across state lines<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span> But the\u00a0GAO revealed\u00a0that their 72 attempts<\/span> outside of the dark web were all \u201cunsuccessful<\/span><\/em>.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Andrew Cuomo Goes<\/span> to War<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n

It\u2019s a battle between the blue and the red, says<\/span> New York\u2019s governor<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

“In the iconography of the American Civil War, the two sides are defined by their colors: union blue versus rebel gray. A century and a half later, Andrew Cuomo invokes colors to advance again the argument that a Republican federal government has divided the states. This time<\/em><\/span> the colors are red and blue<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In his official address kicking off the new year\u2014and no doubt his bid for the White House\u2014Mr. Cuomo accuses Republicans in Washington of having declared an \u201ceconomic civil war\u201d aimed at \u201crobbing the blue states to pay for the red states.\u201d<\/strong><\/span> The reference is to the limit on deductibility for state and local taxes in the GOP tax reform passed just before Christmas. The effective tax hike on New York residents, the governor complains, \u201ccould cause people to leave the state.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Hyperbole aside, Mr. Cuomo and other blue-state governors are right<\/em><\/span> about the pain. The SALT deduction operated as an effective federal subsidy for blue-state taxpayers because it returned to them some of the high taxes they paid to their state governments.<\/span> With the deduction now capped at $10,000, citizens in states such as New York, New Jersey, California and Connecticut will be feeling more keenly the pinch of their states\u2019 tax and spending policies<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSALT is one of many maneuvers that have let states spend without facing reality<\/em><\/span>,\u201d says Eileen Norcross, director for the State and Local Policy Project at George Mason University\u2019s Mercatus Center. \u201cThe states hurt the most<\/em><\/span> by the changes to SALT are the same states<\/em><\/span> that have relied on evasive budgetary tactics<\/em><\/span>: lowballing liabilities, skipping pension payments and issuing debts to cover debts.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Cuomo\u2019s resort to war metaphors is illuminating<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> In the few weeks since the tax bill has become law, blue-state pols have declared they are willing to entertain any number of workarounds to deliver relief for their taxpayers<\/span><\/em>: suing on the grounds that capping the deduction is unconstitutional, changing their nondeductible state income taxes into deductible charitable contributions, or replacing a state income tax with a payroll tax, which employers would be able to deduct.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, Gen. Cuomo and his fellow civil warriors will consider anything<\/em><\/span> to hold the blue line\u2014anything<\/span><\/em>, that is, except<\/em><\/span> address the root problem<\/em><\/span> by lowering their taxes and spending<\/em><\/span>. Because to do so would require taking on the public unions that drive much of state spending and debt, and are the key constituency of the 21st-century Democratic Party.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Ironically, in the course of denouncing the attack from Republicans in Congress and the White House, Mr. Cuomo ceded their core argument<\/em><\/span>: Tax rates affect behavior<\/em><\/span>. For in his declaration of war, Mr. Cuomo admitted his worry that hiking the marginal tax rate on New Yorkers gives them an incentive to relocate.<\/span> Until now it was supposed to be a Republican canard that highly taxed blue staters defect to lower-taxed red states.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Just as illuminating<\/em><\/span>, this<\/em><\/span> is a battle being waged for the wealthy<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span> In his speech Mr. Cuomo hailed the Empire State as a progressive \u201cbeacon\u201d unto the nation. But in a Monday post, Thurston Powers, a legislative analyst for the American Legislative Exchange Council\u2019s Center for State Fiscal Reform, noted that 88% of the savings<\/span> from the SALT deduction were enjoyed by people with incomes of $100,000 or more<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Note to New York City mayor and self-styled Progressive in Chief Bill de Blasio : The elimination of this deduction diminishes an effective subsidy for wealthier taxpayers<\/em><\/span>. <\/strong><\/span>So where are the shouts of support for making the rich pay their \u201cfair share\u201d<\/em><\/span>?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, Gen. Cuomo speaks of war. It\u2019s an interesting way to enter 2018…”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She reportedly contends that meritocracy is oftentimes associated with hard work<\/span>, but it ignores \u201csystematic barriers\u201d that prevent the opportunity of success<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Rubel reportedly recommended that math teachers<\/em><\/span> use more social justice issues during lessons<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Rubel, however, warned that teaching<\/span> \u201csocial justice\u201d can also be a tool of whiteness<\/span> if teachers are ignorant to the experiences of their minority students<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span>.<\/em>..”<\/p>\n

Thus, when little Latifah and Jamaad can’t get jobs at Burger King because they fail to demonstrate the most basic understanding of mathematics, the likes of Laurie Rubel will blame it on racism.\u00a0\u00a0It’s another classic “heads we win, tails you lose!” conclusion from Progressives bereft of any argument grounded in fact.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Those last two memes came to mind during a conversation in which G. Trevor, Lord High King of all<\/em><\/span> Vietors, wondered why Republicans always cede the playing field of facts in general, and terminology in particular, to The Left.<\/strong><\/p>\n

First, by not relentlessly<\/em><\/span> referring to<\/em><\/span> the facts<\/em><\/span>!\u00a0 Watching Tucker Carlson “debate” the realities of the theory of anthropogenic global warming with the nitwit in the hat<\/em><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>we were perplexed he never brought up the repeated falsification of temperature and climate data by supposed “scientists”, not to mention question why, if human activity is<\/em><\/span> behind “climate change”, what caused the retreat of the glaciers which covered North America 20,000 years ago?\u00a0 After all, if the science is so compelling, why falsify the facts?!?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Then there’s the terminology surrender.\u00a0 Think about it: the GOP routinely uses terms like “DREAMers”, “pro-choice”, “Palestinian”, etc. created by the opposition<\/em> to obfuscate the truth<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 Thus are illegal aliens cloaked in a mantle of nobility, advocates of the killing of the unborn granted moral cover and a non-existent people rights and grievances they never had.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We can only assume it’s for the same reason Republicans continue to allow the likes of George Snuffleupagus, Candy Crowley and Anderson Cooper to “moderate” their debates: ‘cuz they’re the party of pandering cowardice and…<\/strong><\/p>\n
