Francis said, referring to a caption put on the back of the image<\/span><\/strong>&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"21\"><strong>First,&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C6cxNR9ML8k\" width=\"420\" height=\"235\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Second, get your facts straight: Hiroshima wasn&#8217;t &#8220;the fruit of war&#8221;, it was the fruit of Japanese aggression and imperialism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>And as moving as Francis&#8217;s photo may be, he&#8217;d do well to remember while approximately 220,000 civilians were killed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>combined<\/em><\/span>, the Japanese slaughtered that many innocent Chinese during their Rape of Nanking&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/t3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-55981\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/t3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/t3.png 400w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/t3-300x183.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>alone<\/em><\/span>!\u00a0 By the way, the mother being beheaded in the center photo is holding her baby.\u00a0 &#8220;Fruits of war&#8221; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>our a*s<\/em><\/span>; more like having sowed the wind, Imperial Japan was bound to reap the whirlwind.\u00a0 Or perhaps that particular verse (Hosea 8:7) isn&#8217;t contained in Francis&#8217; They are taking the journalist\u2019s free pass as observers, not participants. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>problem<\/em><\/span> is <em>that stance <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">is a lie<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The Super Bowl is American theatre.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> It is perhaps <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the most orchestrated live event that takes place in the U.S. today<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> It is designed, carefully framed, its halftime show meticulously planned and the placement of its ads, which have become key accouterments to the show, are choreographed down to the second.<\/strong> <\/span>All that surrounds the game is such a pre-written play that even the \u201cfans\u201d who cheer the bands on the field at halftime all have the same wave, the same color clothes or whatever fits the performance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The Super Bowl is not just some live event journalists are watching. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">It is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>composed affair<\/em><\/span> <em>designed to make us <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">feel<\/span> a certain way, even to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">buy<\/span> certain products<\/em>\u2014<em>the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">central product<\/span> being the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NFL<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>And that brand has been tarnished.<\/em><\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Not simply harmed by the protest Colin Kaepernick began and the NFL players after him who\u2019ve kneeled during our national anthem have continued, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>but fundamentally damaged by a lack of honesty from the NFL and from many of the networks that broadcast NFL games<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If NBC focuses a camera in on players who choose not to respect the flag and all it stands for before the big game then they aren\u2019t just showing what happens at a live event, but are making the protest a part of their choreographed show. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Might they <em>also<\/em>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>during the anthem<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>show a group of fans holding signs saying \u201cGod Bless America<\/em><\/span>\u201d?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This is at the heart of why fans are turning away from the NFL. property, and have failed to protect essential public trust resources.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">I leave the numerous\u00a0legal issues\u00a0to the lawyers, <em>although precisely how the ineffable Hansen came to be the &#8220;guardian&#8221; for future generations <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">is a question both fascinating and amusing<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> Instead, it is crucial to recognize first that <em>the fundamental policy assumption underlying this lawsuit<\/em> \u2014 we can make &#8220;the children&#8221; better off by making them poorer \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is preposterous<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>More generally, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the lawsuit is a blatant attempt to circumvent democratic processes, in terms of both the Congressional power to make policy and the authority of the president to implement it<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Climate policies \u2014 mandated reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions \u2014 by and large are energy policies, and the constitution is silent on which such policies would serve the interests of future generations, or on the appropriate tradeoffs between the interests of &#8220;the children&#8221; and the adults alive in the here and now.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Those are policy questions, and this attempt to induce judges to interfere with Congress&#8217; legislative powers is deeply destructive of our constitutional institutions.<\/span> Should &#8220;the children&#8221; <em>not be concerned about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">that<\/span><\/em>? <span style=\"color: #003300;\"><em>Why are &#8220;the children&#8221; not suing #008000;\"><strong>Second, the claim about the protection of &#8220;essential public trust resources&#8221; boils down to an assertion that carbon dioxide is a &#8220;pollutant.&#8221;\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>most important<\/em><\/span> GHG <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is water vapor<\/em><\/span>; does anyone claim <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>that<\/em><\/span> it is a &#8220;pollutant?&#8221;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #003300;\">Obviously not, and not because ocean evaporation is a natural process; so are volcanic eruptions, and the massive amounts of effluents emitted by volcanoes are pollutants by any definition.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Third, consider a\u00a0<em>homo sapiens<\/em>\u00a0baby born in a cave some tens of thousands of years ago, in a world with environmental quality effectively untouched by mankind.<\/strong> <\/span>That child at birth would have had a life expectancy on the order of ten years; had it been able to choose, it is obvious that it willingly would have given up some environmental quality in exchange for better housing, food, water, medical care, safety,\u00a0<em>ad infinitum<\/em>. <span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>That is, it is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>obvious<\/em><\/span> that people <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>willingly choose<\/em><\/span> to give up <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>some<\/em><\/span> environmental quality <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>in exchange<\/em> <em>for a life both longer and wealthier<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In other words, the children&#8217;s lawsuit is inconsistent\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>with actual interests of future generations<\/em><\/span>, as the obvious underlying assumption is that future generations would prefer the purest possible environmental quality.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #003300;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>That is not correct<\/em><\/span>: Future generations want to inherit the most valuable possible capital stock in all of its myriad dimensions, among which environmental quality is one important component among many, <em>and among all of which there are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">tradeoffs<\/span> that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cannot be avoided<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Precisely what <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">is<\/span><\/em> the children&#8217;s climate lawsuit trying to achieve? <span style=\"color: #003300;\">It <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>cannot be<\/em><\/span> protection of our constitutional principles, or protection of future generations, or environmental improvement.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Only one possibility remains<\/em>: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>It is part of the long-term effort by the environmental left to use any means possible to exert control over other people&#8217;s property, economic choices, and lifestyles<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The plaintiff attorneys are happy to participate in a litigation process in which
