color: #0000ff;\"><em>the editors at NRO<\/em><\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Whats-For-Desert-Govt-Shutdown-1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56185\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Whats-For-Desert-Govt-Shutdown-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Whats-For-Desert-Govt-Shutdown-1-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Whats-For-Desert-Govt-Shutdown-1-1-300x147.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;&#8230;<span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>The Democrats are trying to spin the media and the public into thinking that the shutdown is the Republicans\u2019 responsibility, pointing out that Republicans \u201ccontrol\u201d both chambers of Congress and the White House and that several Senate Republicans voted against the bill too. <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><em>It remains the case that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the government would be fully open<\/span> for business <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">if<\/span> Democrats had <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> voted <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">against<\/span> a bill \u2014 a bill, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">again<\/span>, which has <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nothing of substance<\/span> they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">oppose<\/span> \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">to get leverage for the policy they favor<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> The Democrats\u2019 negotiating stance is: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Give us this amnesty, or we\u2019ll make the government shut down and blame you Republicans for it<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">It is the <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">exact<\/span><\/em> tactic they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>decried<\/em><\/span> in 2013, when Republicans refused to pass legislation to keep the government funded unless Democrats agreed to a partial repeal of Obamacare.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>The Democratic demands both are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>unreasonable in themselves and set a bad precedent<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The end of the amnesty for illegal immigrants who came here as minors \u2014 President Obama implemented it without legislative authorization, and President Trump said he would cancel it unless authorized \u2014 will not mean a mass deportation of this population. <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Republicans should agree to a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>limited<\/em><\/span> amnesty <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>only<\/em><\/span> if it comes with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>real enforcement measures<\/em><\/span>, such as mandatory E-Verify for new hires, and limits on the ability of the amnestied population to sponsor further immigrants. <span style=\"color: #008080;\">Only such a deal should be acceptable to Republicans, whether it happens in the context of a bill to keep the government funded or separate legislation.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Hang tough<\/em><\/span>, Republicans.<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, here&#8217;s The Gouge!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First up,<\/strong><strong>\u00a0here&#8217;s a few headlines which indicate there may be big trouble brewing in three separate bastions of Socialism:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Exhibit &#8220;A&#8221; Furman professor of law and leadership at Harvard Law School, outlined a scenario in which the former senator could take the reins of power in the event of a series of impeachments of the Trump administration.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If President Trump resigns or gets impeached, Vice President Mike Pence resigns or is impeached and House Speaker Paul Ryan \u2013 who would legally become the heir to the top job \u2013 appoints Clinton as his deputy and then resigns, Clinton would become the president, the professor said. <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u201cThis is one way that it could happen,\u201d Lessig told\u00a0Newsweek\u00a0magazine on Wednesday.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #940a0a;\"><strong>Lessig first envisioned this scenario in a blog post back in October. <span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cIf Ryan became President because the Trump\/Pence campaign committed treason, who should he nominate as his Vice President?\u201d he wrote.<\/span> \u201cThe answer seems unavoidable: <em>He should nominate the person defeated by the treason of his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">own<\/span> party, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and then step aside<\/span>, and let <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">her<\/span> become the President<\/em>.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>The hypothetical scenario was mocked on social media, with some pointing out that the U.S. Constitution and the existing laws clearly define the line of succession \u2013 leaving no actual legal avenue for Clinton to take office, contrary to the professor\u2019s claims.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #940a0a;\"><strong>Others have taken an issue with the magazine for pushing the theory without scrutiny. <span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cWhat&#8217;s left of Newsweek is actively making people dumber and less informed and honestly should be unfollowed and shunned for this kind of behavior,\u201d\u00a0wrote\u00a0Wall Street Journal journalist Byron Tau<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Except, as this interview with Tucker Carlson confirms&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xGXJs-YH-wA\" width=\"420\" height=\"235\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; We get more freezing rain than snow. The summers are equatorial. August is like one extended scene from &#8220;Barton Fink,&#8221; with everyone pretending not to be drenched in sweat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/FERRARI-OZ-thumb-400x210-245279.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56165\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/FERRARI-OZ-thumb-400x210-245279.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/FERRARI-OZ-thumb-400x210-245279.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/FERRARI-OZ-thumb-400x210-245279-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>The once-Golden State dichotomy: Ferraris and once-fertile fields.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The point is that California attracts an enormous number of rich people who think it&#8217;s worth the high taxes, awful traffic and even the threat of tectonic annihilation to live there &#8212; <em>for reasons that literally <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">have nothing to do with the state&#8217;s liberal policies<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Indeed, most of the Californians I know live there <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>despite<\/em><\/span> those policies, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not because<\/em><\/span> of them.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><i class=\"fa fa-arrow-circle-right\"><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>No offense to South Dakota, but if <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>it<\/em><\/span> adopted the California model of heavy regulation, high taxes and politically correct social engineering, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>there&#8217;d be a caravan of refugees heading to states such as Wyoming and Minnesota<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span> (I suspect South Dakotan pride would keep them from heading to North Dakota.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Anyway, there&#8217;s a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>new<\/em><\/span> data point to inform the debate that hopefully will be more difficult to ignore: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>California is the poverty capital of America<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/california-broke.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56166\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/california-broke.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/california-broke.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/california-broke-228x300.jpg 228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The Census Bureau has come up with a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>new and better way<\/em><\/span> to measure poverty.<\/span> <em>The standard model doesn&#8217;t take into account <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all sorts of factors that matter in the real world<\/span><\/em> &#8212; the overall cost of living, including food, housing prices, utilities, medical care and taxes.<\/strong><\/span> This is just common sense. The median household income in Mississippi is about $41,000 per year. In California it&#8217;s about $65,000. Does anyone doubt that $41,000 goes a lot further in Biloxi than in Los Angeles?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>According to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>standard<\/em><\/span> poverty measure, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Mississippi<\/em><\/span> ranks <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>first<\/em><\/span> in the nation with a rate of 20.8 percent. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>California<\/em><\/span> ranks <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>16th<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The Census Bureau&#8217;s &#8220;Supplemental Poverty Measure&#8221; places <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>California first<\/em><\/span> in the nation with a poverty rate of 20.4, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Mississippi<\/em><\/span> falls to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>fifth<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Wealthy liberal Californians can be quite smug about how they can afford their strict land-use policies, draconian environmental regulations and high taxes. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>wealthy<\/em><\/span> Californians can <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>afford<\/em><\/span> them &#8212; but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>poor<\/em><\/span> Californians <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>are paying the price<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile,
