organizations!\u00a0 After all, doesn&#8217;t EVERY streaming service sign $50,000,000 contracts to &#8220;produce&#8221; content with couples <em>possessing <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">no prior production experience whatsoever<\/span><\/em>?!?\u00a0 This is <em>NBC<\/em> hiring Chelsea Clinton for over $600,000\/year for who knows <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>what<\/em><\/span>\u00a0on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>hemorrhoids<\/em><\/span>&#8230;er,&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>steroids<\/em><\/span>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As <em>CNN premeditatively\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">misstated<\/span><\/em>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Obamas want to highlight positive stories about people making a difference, <em>they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">do not<\/span> want to use it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">as a platform to take on President Trump<\/span> (at least <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">directly<\/span><\/em>).<\/span><\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IOfMKv5fxgQ?start=19\" width=\"420\" height=\"235\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; text-decoration: underline;\">His story about the Papadopoulos meeting calls the FBI\u2019s into question<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/download-16.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-59908\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/download-16.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/download-16.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/download-16-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hey, if <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Trey Gowdy<\/span> believes it, it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MUST<\/span> be true&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and<\/span> in the best interest of\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">America<\/span>!!!<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>To hear the Federal Bureau of Investigation tell it, <em>its decision to launch a counterintelligence probe into a major-party presidential campaign <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">comes down to a foreign tip about a 28-year-old fourth-tier Trump adviser, George Papadopoulos<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>The FBI\u2019s media scribes have dutifully reported the bare facts of that \u201cintel.\u201d<\/strong><\/span> <strong>We are told the infamous tip came from Alexander Downer, <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">at the time the Australian ambassador to the U.K<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Mr. Downer invited Mr. Papadopoulos for a drink<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>WHY<\/em><\/span><em>?!? How would Alexander Downer have the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">faintest clue<\/span> as to who or what Papadopoulos was?!?<\/em>)<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">in early May 2016, where the aide told the ambassador the Russians had dirt on Hillary Clinton.<\/span><\/span> Word of this encounter <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>at some point<\/em><\/span> reached the FBI, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>inspiring it to launch its counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign on July 31<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong><em>Notably<\/em> (nay, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>suspiciously<\/em><\/span>) <em>absent or muddled are the details of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">how and when<\/span> that information made its way to the FBI, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">what exactly was transmitted<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span> A December 2017 New York Times story vaguely explains that the Australians passed the info to \u201cAmerican counterparts\u201d about \u201ctwo months later,\u201d and that once it \u201creached the FBI,\u201d the bureau acted. Even the Times admits it\u2019s \u201cnot clear\u201d why it took the Aussies so long to flip such a supposedly smoking tip.<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> <strong>The story meanwhile slyly leads readers to believe that Mr. Papadopoulos told Mr. Downer that Moscow had \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>thousands of emails<\/em><\/span>,\u201d <em>but read it closely and the Times in fact never specifies <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">what<\/span> the Trump aide said, beyond \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dirt<\/span><\/em>.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">When Mr. Downer ended his service in the U.K. this April, he sat for an interview with the Australian, a national newspaper, and \u201cspoke for the first time\u201d about the Papadopoulos event. Mr. Downer said he officially reported the Papadopoulos meeting back to Australia \u201cthe following day or a day or two after,\u201d as it \u201cseemed quite interesting.\u201d<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> <strong>The story nonchalantly notes that \u201cafter a period of time, Australia\u2019s ambassador to the US, Joe Hockey, passed the information on to Washington.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>My reporting indicates otherwise<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">A diplomatic source tells me <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Mr. Hockey neither transmitted any information to the FBI nor was approached by the U.S. about the tip<\/em><\/span>. <\/span>Rather, it was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Mr. Downer<\/em><\/span> who at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>some point<\/em><\/span> decided to convey his information\u2014<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>to the U.S. Embassy in London<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">That matters<\/span> because it is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> how things <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">are normally done<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Trey Gowdy&#8217;s contention to the contrary notwithstanding.\u00a0 And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the rest<\/em><\/span>, as they say, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is history<\/em><\/span>, courtesy of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Jeff Sessions<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Since we&#8217;re on the subject of the man whose only notable achievement as Attorney General has been his principled opposition to the irresistible tide of marijuana legalization, as\u00a0<em>NRO<\/em>\u00a0reports, The Donald has nomination One, James Comey and Andrew McCabe&#8230;not to mention Lois Lerner, John Koskinen, Cheryl Mills, Huma Abedin, Barack Obama, Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder and the rest of the Commie cast of Americans who are ready, willing, and able to defend themselves and others should carry a gun in public<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/file-repository\/active-shooter-incidents-us-2016-2017.pdf\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest report<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>on active-shooter incidents in the United States, two things are increasingly clear.<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> First, the United States has a growing problem with actual or attempted spree killers.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">And second, armed and alert citizens <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>can<\/em><\/span> be\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>part<\/em><\/span>\u00a0of the solution.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Let\u2019s begin with the problem.<\/strong> <\/span>The FBI defines an \u201cactive shooter\u201d as \u201cone or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area.\u201d In many ways, it\u2019s a better metric for our nation\u2019s mass-shooting problem because it includes attempts, not just completed mass killings (which the FBI defines as \u201cthree or more killings in a single incident\u201d).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Make no mistake, active shooters are on the rise.<\/strong><\/span> In 2016 and 2017 there were a total of 50 active-shooter situations, 20 in 2016, and 30 in 2017. These shooters inflicted a total of 943 casualties, with 221 people killed. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Let\u2019s contrast this with previous years.<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>In 2014 and 2015, there were<\/strong><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/file-repository\/activeshooterincidentsus_2014-2015.pdf\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">40 active-shooter incidents<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>(20 each year), which inflicted a total of 231 casualties, with 92 fatalities.<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Extending the analysis even farther, we find that\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/file-repository\/active-shooter-study-2000-2013-1.pdf\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">between 2000 and 2013<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>there were an average 11.4 incidents per year, with a low of just one in 2000 and a high of 26 in 2010.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>In the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>14 years<\/em><\/span> between 2000 and 2013, there were 20 or more active-shooting incidents <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>only twice<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">There have been 20 or more incidents\u00a0<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">every year\u00a0since<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> In other words: <em>America, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">we have a problem<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">As I wrote right after the Santa Fe school massacre, the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/why-do-mass-shootings-happen-best-explanation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">best explanation<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">for the rise in active shooters is the least comforting.<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>That explanation comes from Malcolm Gladwell in a<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2015\/10\/19\/thresholds-of-violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seminal 2015 essay<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>for the\u00a0<em>New Yorker\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>As featured in an earlier edition of The Gouge.<\/em>)<\/span>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">In essence, we are in the midst of a slow-motion \u201criot\u201d of mass shootings, with each shooting lowering the threshold for the next.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>sophisticated<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>&#8220;sophisticated&#8221;: spelled &#8220;i-n-t-e-l-l-i-g-e-n-t&#8221;
