Obama Administration Secretly Helped Iran Skirt Financial Sanctions<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n

“The Obama administration helped Iran utilize sanctioned oil revenue stranded in a foreign bank account in 2016 while actively misleading Congress about the cooperation, according to the results of a Republican led Senate investigation released Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

After signing the 2015 nuclear deal, which unfroze Iran\u2019s U.S. accounts in exchange for the regime\u2019s non-proliferation pledge, the Obama administration publicly maintained<\/em><\/span> that all non-nuclear sanctions<\/em><\/span> barring Iran from operating within the U.S. financial system would remain in place<\/em><\/span>. \u201cSenior U.S. government officials repeatedly<\/em> testified to Congress<\/em><\/span> that Iranian access to the U.S. financial system was not on the table or part of any deal<\/em><\/span>,\u201d congressional investigators wrote in the report.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Despite this pledge to the public and Congress, in February 2016<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0the administration assisted Tehran in recovering\u00a0$5.7 billion<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0held in the\u00a0Bank Muscat in the Persian Gulf state of Oman<\/strong><\/span>, according to the\u00a0report, compiled by the\u00a0Senate\u2019s permanent subcommittee on investigations.\u00a0And, according to the report, administration officials continued<\/em><\/span> to misled Congress after<\/span> the license was issued<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u201cEven after the specific license was issued, U.S. government officials maintained in congressional testimony that Iran would not be granted access to the U.S. financial system,\u201d the report noted.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
