There is a life outside politics, and there are places and situations that are outside politics. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>We have, for the moment, abandoned that distinction, <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">especially for those on the left<\/span> <\/em>who insist on a totalitarian model of political life in which everything is subject to political scrutiny, in which<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the personal<\/span> <\/em>is<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> truly and categorically<\/span> \u2014 <\/em>and horrifyingly<em> \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the political<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>They <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">insist that this is necessary<\/span> because of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">extraordinary times<\/span> in which we live, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">extraordinary threats<\/span> that we currently face, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">emergency under which we are living<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>But there <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">is no emergency<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Those familiar with the political career of Indira Gandhi will have a special appreciation for the concept of \u201cemergency.\u201d The Emergency refers to a 21-month period during which Mrs. Gandhi suspended civil liberties, ruled by decree, jailed political opponents, censored newspapers, and laid the foundations for what might have been a permanent dictatorship. Dissident political parties were banned, regional governments were dissolved and their leaders incarcerated. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>(The Malthusians <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>never sleep<\/em><\/span>: India <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>also<\/em><\/span> set on a course of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>involuntary sterilization during this period<\/em><\/span>, as a means of population control.) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">There had been political unrest and political violence (as, unhappily, there long had been in India), <em>but the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">proximate cause<\/span> of the Emergency was the fact that Mrs. Gandhi <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">had lost a court case that might have resulted in her being removed from office<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> <em>The Emergency was the fact that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">there was <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">political opposition to her government<\/span>, and that the opposition <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">was effective<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Our situation is not quite so stark, but it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is<\/em><\/span> analogous. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Longstanding American institutions ranging from the First Amendment to the Electoral College to the Senate <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">have been suddenly and rashly declared \u201cillegitimate<\/span><\/em>.\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Why<\/em><\/span>? Because, <em>at the moment<\/em>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>they are keeping the Left from getting what it wants<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The Left wants to silence certain right-wing critics and dissidents, and the First Amendment stops them. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Senate and the Electoral College perform their intended constitutional role in protecting the interests of the less-populous states and their residents, ensuring the protecting of minority interests from the tyranny of the majority.<\/span> <em>This <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">annoys<\/span> the would-be tyrants<\/em>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(They are, to their discredit, unable to truly appreciate that political tides turn, and that majorities are fickle things.)<\/span> <em>The ordinary political processes of the United States <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">have produced results that the Left does not like<\/span>, and, hence, those processes and the institutions that enable them <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">must be considered illegitimate<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court is to be understood as a national emergency because&#8230;<em>Democrats would prefer to have somebody else, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and they believe they having something like a divine right to rule<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>At that level, this is about something other than politics per se. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I have spent about 30 years covering political protests of various kinds, and, of course, <em>people rarely show up at a protest because they are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">happy<\/span> about something.<\/em><\/span> But many of the people one encounters at such events (from Occupy Wall Street to the tea-party rallies)\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>are categorically unhappy, bereft and adrift in a way that is only tangentially related to politics<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>though we&#8217;d dispute Williamson&#8217;s inclusion of most Tea-Partiers, particularly in light of his next assertion.<\/em>)<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">They turn to politics to provide a sense of meaning that might once have been provided by family or religion, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>two anchors from which many of us enlightened moderns have cut ourselves away<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> But politics provides a sense of meaning only when we convince ourselves that there is a great deal at stake.<\/strong><\/span> I do not know how many planning-and-zoning meetings I have been to, how many suburban school-board meetings and small-town municipal board meetings. Rarely does one get the sense that there is much that is urgent going on. They are boring, and, generally, free of drama. (Not always. A visit with the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2012\/07\/penniless-paradise-kevin-d-williamson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Bernardino, Calif.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span>, city leadership will cause one to despair for democracy.) Democratic statewide winners exist here and there, such as North Carolina governor Roy Cooper and Louisiana governor Jon Bel Edwards. Doug Jones won his Senate race in Alabama, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>though it helps to run against Roy Moore<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The profile pieces of the Great Southern Democratic Hopes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>always include the same ingredients<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u201c<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">This<\/span><\/em> Democrat <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>owns a gun and hunts<\/em><\/span>!\u201d<\/span> (Never mind that they usually support some form of gun control that is anathema to many gun owners and the NRA.) <span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>They can quote a Bible verse<\/em><\/span>!\u201d<\/span> (Yet they almost inevitably pay tribute in one form or another to Planned Parenthood.) <span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>This<\/em><\/span> Democrat <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>wears cowboy boots<\/em><\/span>!\u201d<\/span> (As if apparel indicated anything meaningful about their governing philosophy.)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>But what the national media <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>really<\/em><\/span> yearn to see is a Democrat <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>who can win Texas<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A Democrat who could win Texas in a presidential race <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>would end the competition before it began<\/em><\/span>; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>a Republican candidate is<\/em> <em>up a creek with no paddle without the Lone Star State\u2019s 38 electoral votes<\/em><\/span>, and a Democrat charismatic and appealing enough to win Texas would <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>probably<\/em><\/span> put <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>other<\/em><\/span> red states in play.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>The stage was set for a torrid media love affair the moment O\u2019Rourke decided to run for Senate.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Give O\u2019Rourke credit for his strengths. He\u2019s handsome and good on the stump, and uses social media in creative ways.
