Trevor, Tod Hirt, Peter J. and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>last<\/em><\/span>, but certainly <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not least<\/em><\/span>, became <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>re<\/em><\/span>acquainted with our old shipmates John Herr and Brian Smith) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>and<\/em><\/span> changed careers, little knowing it was Black Monday, 1987!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>That being said, we&#8217;re going to do something we rarely if ever do: plug a movie.\u00a0 So read and heed as the <em>WSJ<\/em>&#8216;s Jason Riley explains why&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"wsj-article-headline\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">\u2018<a style=\"color: #ff00ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/gosnell-like-its-namesake-faces-a-media-blackout-1539730589\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Gosnell,\u2019 Like Its Namesake, Faces a Media Blackout<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n<h3 class=\"sub-head\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/gosnell-like-its-namesake-faces-a-media-blackout-1539730589\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Reviews are withheld and ads rejected for fear of facing up to what \u2018abortion rights\u2019 mean in practice<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_295720181016030534.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-63924\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_295720181016030534.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_295720181016030534.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_295720181016030534-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cGosnell\u201d is a difficult film to watch, not because of what appears on the screen\u2014it\u2019s rated PG-13\u2014but because of what is left to the viewer\u2019s imagination. This might explain why the theater where I caught the film Friday was mostly empty. <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>But <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>other<\/em><\/span> explanations are worth considering.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Kermit Gosnell, <em>who was convicted of murder following a two-month trial in 2013, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">is currently serving a life sentence in prison with no possibility of parole<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">He was an abortion doctor based in Philadelphia, where state law <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>prohibits<\/em><\/span> the procedure beginning at 24 weeks gestational age.<\/span> By <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>his own admission<\/em><\/span>, Dr. Gosnell <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>regularly performed illegal late-term abortions<\/em><\/span>, mostly on low-income minority women. <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">In some cases he would induce labor, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>deliver live babies<\/em><\/span>, <em>and t<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hen kill them by snipping the backs of their necks with scissors<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-read-next-mobile\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Nick Searcy directed the film, based on a book of the same title by a married couple of investigative journalists from Ireland, Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer. In an essay last month, Mr. Searcy explained why he was drawn to the subject. \u201cIt is nearly impossible to find an adult person who does not have an opinion on the issue of abortion,\u201d he wrote in National Review, \u201cand yet how little we all know about it\u2014how it is done, what the laws are surrounding it, how it is regulated, legislated, and practiced. I wanted to share that knowledge.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Dr. Gosnell\u2019s story may not change a single mind about abortion, yet the movie and book make an important contribution to a debate that continues to rage 45 years after\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>. <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><em>They offer a better understanding of what \u201cabortion rights\u201d <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mean in practice<\/span> and a renewed appreciation of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">tragic consequences<\/span> that can result <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">when politicians, public-health officials and the media put blind ideology ahead of basic human decency<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Dr. Gosnell had been performing illegal abortions <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>for decades<\/em><\/span> before law-enforcement officials stumbled upon him, <em>and when they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">did<\/span>, it was for reasons that had <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nothing to do with his abortion practice<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">In 2009 a detective investigating prescription-drug dealing in Philadelphia received a tip about Dr. Gosnell from an informant.<\/span> It turned out he was selling prescriptions for OxyContin, Percocet and Xanax to anyone who could afford his $150 fee.<\/strong><\/span> On a typical night, Dr. Gosnell would write some 200 prescriptions. <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>After law-enforcement officials raided his clinic in 2010, however, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>busting up one of Pennsylvania\u2019s largest pill mills was no longer the most pressing concern<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>In their book, Ms. McElhinney and Mr. McAleer write that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the Gosnell raid unveiled \u201ca house of horrors<\/em><\/span>.\u201d <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">The toilets were clogged with fetal remains.<\/span> Cupboards contained jars with the severed feet of infants inside. <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">In refrigerators and freezers, detectives found more discarded fetuses stored in milk cartons, water jugs, cat-food containers and Minute Maid juice boxes with the tops cut off to make the openings larger.<\/span><\/strong><\/span> Later, authorities would discover that Dr. Gosnell employed \u201cassistants\u201d\u2014who had no medical training and were paid under the table\u2014to sedate patients, conduct ultrasounds and administer labor-inducing drugs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Dr. Gosnell\u2019s story becomes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>even more upsetting<\/em><\/span> when you realize <em>how much sooner he <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">should<\/span> have been caught<\/em>. <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">State inspectors visited the clinic <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>three times<\/em><\/span> between 1989 and 1993. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Each time<\/em><\/span> they discovered that <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">no registered nurses were on staff<\/span>, as the law requires, yet permitted him to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">continue providing abortions<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> After <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Tom Ridge<\/em><\/span>, <em>a pro-choice Republican, became governor in 1994<\/em>, <em>the state Department of Health stopped <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all<\/span> routine inspections of abortion clinics<\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Even when state officials <em>received complaints<\/em> about Dr. Gosnell, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>they were reluctant to follow up<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">A woman who received an abortion at his clinic in 1999 later became ill and was admitted to the hospital. <\/span>Dr. Gosnell <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>had mistakenly left the baby\u2019s arm and leg inside the mother<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><em>State Health Department officials <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">decided that no investigation was warranted<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> When Dr. Gosnell botched another abortion in a similar fashion years later, <em>state officials <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">again looked the other way<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Once Dr. Gosnell\u2019s trial began in 2013, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>it was the national media\u2019s turn to ignore him<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong> <\/span>Fox News gave the trial significant attention, but few other major outlets did the same. <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong><em>The liberal press knew the story would cast a negative light on abortion, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">that<\/span> concerned them <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">much more<\/span> than <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bringing to justice a doctor who committed infanticide and routinely risked the health of women<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Ultimately, social media shamed the press into covering the trial, and you won\u2019t be shocked to find out that interest in the story hasn\u2019t lasted. <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Some outlets have refused to run ads for the film, and almost all major publications have declined to review it<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Which also helps explain why I had so little company on Friday.<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>What a difference subject matter makes: the same MSM which literally <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>trumpeted<\/em><\/span> coverage of the Catholic Church&#8217;s Pennsylvania sex scandal <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">from the rooftops<\/span><\/em> was by comparison almost silent on Gosnell&#8217;s crimes against primarily poor Black women in Philadelphia, despite the good doctor&#8217;s record rivaling even the worst the Nazis could offer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We urge you see <em>Gosnel<\/em>l, not to support Hollywood, but to send a message.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, here&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Maybe not<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/image1-4.37.58-PM.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-63963\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/image1-4.37.58-PM.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/image1-4.37.58-PM.jpeg 250w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/image1-4.37.58-PM-216x300.jpeg 216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>The conventional wisdom is that the DNA report backfired and may damage Ms. Warren\u2019s standing as a possible presidential nominee, providing fodder for ridicule from Kamala Harris, Cory Booker and Joe Biden. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I <em>doubt<\/em> it.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Ms. Warren understands that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the conventional wisdom about what works in politics died with the Trump presidency<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff0000;\"><em>She has elevated herself as Mr. Trump\u2019s most visible opponent<\/em><\/span>. <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Political celebrity<\/span>, a straight-line function of little more than exposure, is the coin of the realm, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">no matter how tarnished<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The most ambitious politicians are becoming increasingly cynical about the reality of inhabiting a world defined by social media and biased press spin. You play the game. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Elizabeth Warren\u2014who incidentally has created a formidable nationwide political machine\u2014is playing it.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">During the Kavanaugh hearings, one wondered why Sens. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You have <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">under three weeks left<\/span><\/em> to publish your last batch of over-the-top pre-election puff pieces on Texas Democrat\/cross-country liberal sensation\/wing-and-a-prayer Senate candidate Beto O\u2019Rourke!<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>It is here that we must face the difficult truth: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Barring a GOP-related disaster of some sort<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>possibly involving a manufactured incident involving a conveniently timed migrant caravan!<\/em>)<\/span> <em>O\u2019Rourke<\/em> \u2014 he of that ineffable \u201ccool factor\u201d and \u201cspecial sauce,\u201d at least according to easily impressed columnists at the<em>\u00a0Washington Post \u2014\u00a0is likely to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lose big<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span> According to the latest polls, Senator Ted Cruz leads him by anywhere between seven and nine points.
