…now meets\u00a0Phil Sheridan’s definition of a “good Indian<\/span><\/a>“<\/span><\/em>…at least in a political sense.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, here’s The Gouge<\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n

First up, courtesy of Slate<\/em>, Ruth Graham notes The Red Queen’s dogged determination to rewrite Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nancy Pelosi Keeps Quoting Her Favorite Bible Verse. The Mystery: It\u2019s Not Actually in the Bible<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h1>\n

“Nancy Pelosi\u00a0addressed\u00a0a gathering of presidents of Christian colleges (we can only assume they’re “Christian” in name only!<\/em>)<\/span> this week in Washington, where she thanked the evangelical community for its leadership on immigration and refugee policy reform. To this end, the speaker of the House quoted a favorite bit of biblical wisdom in her opening statement: \u201cTo minister to the needs of God\u2019s creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

OK,\u00a0actually<\/em><\/span>, she said, it might not\u00a0technically<\/em><\/span>\u00a0be from the Bible. \u201cI can\u2019t find it in the Bible, but I quote it all the time,\u201d Pelosi said as she introduced the quote.<\/span> \u201cI keep reading and reading the Bible\u2014I know it\u2019s there someplace<\/em><\/span>. It\u2019s supposed<\/em><\/span> to be in Isaiah.<\/span> I heard a bishop say, \u2018To minister to the needs of God\u2019s creation \u2026 \u2019 \u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

To clarify<\/em>: It is not<\/em><\/span> \u201cthere someplace.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

…It\u2019s easy to see why the line is useful for a politician<\/span><\/em>. It suggests that to do any kind<\/span> of earthly good<\/em>\u2014\u201cto minister to the needs of God\u2019s creation\u201d\u2014is a holy act<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The quote is a dollop of ancient wisdom on top of a dry discussion of policy. It\u2019s the next best thing to the Prophet Isaiah himself appearing on the House floor to, say, oppose a particular iteration of the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013<\/em><\/span> (\u201cto ignore those needs, as this bill does, is to dishonor the God who made us\u201d).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
