“During a recent struggle session over his role in the Clarence Thomas-Anita Hill Supreme Court hearings of 1991, prospective presidential candidate Joe Biden declared that the United States had a centuries-old embedded cultural problem with permissive violence against women. \u201cIt\u2019s an English jurisprudential culture,\u201d Biden\u00a0explained\u00a0this week, \u201ca white man\u2019s culture<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> It\u2019s got to change<\/em><\/span>.\u201d <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEnglish jurisprudential culture\u201d is, of course, the foundation of American governance and our Constitutional rights.<\/span> It\u2019s unlikely any culture in history has\u00a0brought\u00a0more freedom and prosperity to more of humankind.<\/strong> <\/span>Now, it\u2019s true that the tenets of this culture have fallen into disfavor with the progressives who Biden is trying to woo. But does any educated person<\/em> truly believe<\/em><\/span> that \u201cEnglish jurisprudential culture\u201d has been more prone towards misogyny than other societies?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

How has Chinese jurisprudential\u00a0culture<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>\u00a0performed for women over history? How about Indian jurisprudential\u00a0culture<\/a><\/em><\/span>?<\/span> Or Russian jurisprudential\u00a0culture<\/a><\/em><\/span>? Or sub-Saharan African jurisprudential\u00a0culture<\/a><\/em><\/span>?<\/span> How has Islamic jurisprudential culture\u00a0<\/em>worked out<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0for women? The \u201cEnglish jurisprudential culture\u201d of New Zealand\u00a0was the first to grant all women the right to vote in 1893, followed over the next decades by\u00a0an array<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0of other English<\/em><\/span> and formerly English<\/span><\/em> colonies.<\/span> Saudi Arabia granted women that same right only in 2011.\u00a0Then again, the women of 1893 \u201cEnglish jurisprudential culture\u201d\u2014voting rights or not\u2014were already leading freer and safer lives than most of the women who have to function under the deeply illiberal legal cultures of the Islamic world today.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Those who\u00a0demand<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>acts of contrition over \u201cEnglish jurisprudential culture,\u201d seem to have a problem with ideals of blind justice and due process that stop us from sacrificing people to the whims of an aggrieved mob<\/em><\/span>. Biden\u2019s transgression against progressivism, as far as I can tell, was\u00a0affirming<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0to Thomas during the Hill hearings that, \u201cfrom the beginning and at this moment, until the end, the presumption [of innocence] is with you.\u201d<\/span> It wasn\u2019t true<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

…If anything<\/em><\/span>, Biden<\/em><\/span> should be apologizing to Thomas<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>…<\/p>\n

Investigators identified no crimes to charge<\/em><\/span>, and so it has, naturally<\/em>, become something else<\/em><\/span>: no longer a theory about a criminal conspiracy<\/em><\/span> \u2014 only an irritable mood<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

…In terms of Donald Trump\u2019s character and habits, there is practically nothing in the Mueller report<\/em><\/span> \u2014 or in the public record since 2016 \u2014 that voters did not already know when they elected him<\/em><\/span>. The Democrats do not<\/em><\/span> propose to impeach Donald Trump for high crimes and misdemeanors<\/em><\/span>, but simply for being Donald Trump<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> One may sympathize with that, but Donald Trump<\/em> is the man the voters chose<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

And that<\/em><\/span> goes to the real<\/em><\/span> issue here: The Democrats cannot accept that they lost an election to Donald Trump<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>…<\/p>\n

…Which is to say: The Democrats\u2019 talk of impeachment is partly<\/em><\/span> about 2020, but it\u2019s mainly<\/em><\/span> about 2016, and their adolescent psychic need to believe<\/span> that the presidential election that brought Donald Trump to the White House was\u00a0illegitimate<\/span>\u00a0rather than an opportunity they simply blew<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span>…”<\/p>\n

Here’s the juice: res ipso loquitur…the thing speaks for itself.\u00a0 Particularly when it comes to the current, incredibly virulent strain of Trump Derangement Syndrome which continues to plague every urban enclave and “newsroom” across the country, as well as the halls of Congress.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“PG&E\u00a0Corp.<\/span>\u00a0can\u2019t prevent its power lines from sparking the kinds of wildfires that have killed scores of Californians.<\/span> So instead<\/em><\/span>, it plans to pull the plug<\/em><\/span> on a giant swath of the state\u2019s population.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

No U.S. utility has ever blacked out so many people on purpose.<\/strong><\/span> PG&E says it could knock out power to as much as an eighth of the state\u2019s population for as long as five days when dangerously high winds arise. Communities likely to get shut off worry PG&E will put people in danger, especially the sick and elderly, and cause financial losses with slim hope of compensation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In October, in a test run of sorts, PG&E for the first time cut power to several small communities over wildfire concerns<\/em><\/span>, including the small Napa Valley town of Calistoga, for about two days<\/span><\/em>. Emergency officials raced door-to-door to check on elderly residents, some of whom relied on electric medical devices.<\/span> Grocers dumped spoiling inventory. Hotels lost business.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

PG&E is \u201cessentially shifting all of the burden, all of the losses onto everyone else<\/em><\/span>,\u201d said Dylan Feik, who was Calistoga city manager until earlier this month.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

By shutting off power in fire-prone parts of its service area, which are home to 5.4 million people, PG&E said in regulatory filings it hopes to prevent more\u00a0deadly wildfires.<\/strong><\/span> The San Francisco-based company\u00a0sought bankruptcy protection in January, citing more than $30 billion in potential damages from fires\u00a0linked to its equipment.<\/p>\n

This plan amounts to an admission by PG&E that it can\u2019t always fulfill its basic job of delivering electricity both safely and reliably<\/em><\/span>. Years of drought and a drying climate have turned the state\u2019s northern forests into a tinderbox, and the utility has failed to make needed investments to make its grid sturdier.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

During this year\u2019s<\/em><\/span> wildfire season, which typically starts around June, PG&E is preparing to make cutoffs to a far larger geographic region than it has targeted for blackouts in the past<\/span>, increasing the number of potentially affected customers nearly 10-fold<\/span><\/em>. While it is unlikely all areas would be affected at once, the outages may turn entire counties dark<\/span><\/strong><\/span>…”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Had these “facts” been offered by the\u00a0Journal<\/em>‘s editorial board, we’d take them with a far smaller grain of salt.\u00a0 But coming as they do from the “news” side, we’re inclined to suspect the powers-that-be in Sacramento bear a much larger share of the blame for the fires which have recently ravaged the once-Golden State than the article “reports”.<\/strong><\/p>\n
