slaughter the unborn for not even a moment of notoriety.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Next up, writing at the <em>WSJ<\/em>, Bill McGurn relates&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"wsj-article-headline\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\">The Tales of Parson Comey<\/span><\/h1>\n<h3 class=\"sub-head\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Apparently the former FBI chief can see into other men\u2019s souls<\/span>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/31rbts.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-70148\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/31rbts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/31rbts.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/31rbts-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;When in 1800 Parson Weems published \u201cA History of the Life and Death, Virtues and Exploits of General George Washington, \u201d this and later editions would become the source of treasured chestnuts such as the tale of the 6-year old George killing his father\u2019s cherry tree or the older Gen. Washington kneeling in the snow to pray at Valley Forge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>With its saccharine moralizing and portrait of larger-than-life integrity, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>it isn\u2019t unlike today\u2019s tales about former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #800080;\">Except that the <em>glowing picture of Parson Comey as a paragon of virtue<\/em> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is a self-portrait<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Like the itinerant preachers who once brought the Gospel to the vast American countryside, Parson Comey periodically rides the circuit.<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>In <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>his<\/em><\/span> case, this means appearing on CNN, penning an op-ed for the New York Times, or posting his pens\u00e9es on<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/quotes.wsj.com\/TWTR\">Twitter<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span class=\"company-name-type\">,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>where he preaches the moral turpitude of anyone who may question, say, using a dossier he himself characterized as \u201csalacious and unverified\u201d to get a warrant to spy on an innocent American<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">But as with Parson Weems before him, <em>Parson Comey\u2019s tales <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">aren\u2019t holding up under the light<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Parson Weems, for example, gave us Washington telling his father, \u201cI cannot tell a lie&#8230;I did cut it with my hatchet.\u201d <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">In the Parson Comey version, the then-FBI director tells the president \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>I don\u2019t leak<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>I don\u2019t do weasel moves<\/em><\/span>\u201d\u2014\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>only later to leak to the Times FBI memos detailing private conversations with the president<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> To <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>avoid<\/em><\/span> leaving <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>his<\/em><\/span> fingerprints, Mr. I Cannot Tell a Lie <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>leaked via a law-professor friend<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>A crime for which, if &#8220;Bull&#8221; Durham is half the bulldog he&#8217;s cracked up to be, Comey will likely be held to account.<\/em>)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Or what about the parson\u2019s tall tale about the FBI agents who\u2019d interviewed national security adviser Michael Flynn at the White House? <span style=\"color: #333399;\">When Bret Baier of Fox News <em>asked him if he\u2019d told Congress that the two agents who\u2019d interviewed Mr. Flynn<\/em> \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>didn\u2019t believe<\/em><\/span> [he] <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>was lying intentionally<\/em><\/span>,\u201d he <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>insisted he hadn\u2019t said it<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>But when the <em>House Intelligence Committee<\/em><em> got the redaction lifted from their report on Russia<\/em>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>there it was on page 54<\/em><\/span>: <em>Parson Comey testifying that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the FBI agents saw<\/span><\/em> \u201c<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nothing that indicated to them that he knew he was lying to them<\/span><\/em>.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Yet now there\u2019s a new team in the parsonage, and they are taking an objective look at what happened at the FBI during the Comey years. <span style=\"color: #800080;\">The question is whether the mistakes were simply a result of sloppiness and overzealousness or a deliberate abuse of power.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>Though we must observe, people don&#8217;t generally go to the mat to cover-up sloppiness or overzealousness!<\/em>)<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>This may explain why Parson Comey <em>has of late<\/em> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>been casting more first stones than usual<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #800080;\">In recent days he\u2019s informed former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that President Trump has \u201ceaten\u201d his soul, sermonized that Attorney General William Barr lacks the character needed to run \u201can organization based on truth,\u201d and assured America that the president had \u201ccorrupt intent\u201d when he asked the White House counsel to sack Robert Mueller.<\/span> Apparently the former FBI director\u2019s abilities include <em>not only upholding the law and fighting off foreign foes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">but seeing into other men\u2019s souls<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Yet, say <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>this<\/em><\/span> for Jim Comey: The parson <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>knows his congregation<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">And he feeds it from Mount Self-Righteous, <em>with a mix of Democratic talking points, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">proclamations about the wickedness of anyone with a different point of view<\/span>, <\/em>and the occasional lofty quotation from Reinhold Niebuhr.<\/span> Ralph Waldo Emerson never met Parson Comey, <em>but plainly he was well-acquainted with the type<\/em>: \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>The louder he spoke of his honor<\/em><\/span>,\u201d Emerson wrote, \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the faster we counted our spoons<\/em><\/span>.\u201d<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comey <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">truly never ceases to amaze<\/span><\/em>: though having <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>supposedly<\/em><\/span>\u00a0been led by an inner voice <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>to take copious notes of his conversations with Trump<\/em><\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/loretta-lynch-james-comey-contradition-clinton-probe-matter-investigation\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">these same feelings never deemed it advisable to memorialize more meaningful conversations with<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a>&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Comey continued:\u00a0\u201cThe Clinton campaign, at the time, was using <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>all kind of euphemism<\/em><\/span>s \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>security review, matters, things like that, for what was going on<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #800080;\">We were getting to a place where the attorney general <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>and<\/em><\/span> I were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>both going to have to testify and talk publicly about<\/em><\/span>. <\/span>And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>I wanted to know<\/em><\/span>, was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>she<\/em><\/span> going to<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em> authorize us<\/em><\/span> to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>confirm we had an investigation<\/em><\/span>?&#8230;<span style=\"color: #800080;\">And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>she said<\/em><\/span>, \u2018<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Yes<\/em><\/span>,<em> but don\u2019t call it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">that<\/span><\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">,<\/span> <em>call it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a matter<\/span><\/em>.&#8217;<\/span> And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>I said<\/em><\/span>, \u2018<em>Why would I do <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">that<\/span><\/em>?\u2019 <span style=\"color: #800080;\">And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>she said<\/em><\/span>, \u2018<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Just call it a matter<\/em><\/span>.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Loretta &#8220;Tarmac Meeting with Slick Willy&#8221; Lynch<\/em><\/span>?!?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>&#8220;I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>did not<\/em><\/span>,&#8221; Lynch responded <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>when asked if she had ever told Comey to call the investigation a &#8220;matter<\/em><\/span>.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;I have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>never<\/em><\/span> instructed a witness as to what to say specifically. <em>Never <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">have<\/span>, never <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span><\/em>,&#8221;<\/span> Lynch continued. &#8220;In the meeting that I had with the Director, we were discussing how best to keep Congress informed of progress and discuss requesting resources for the Department overall. <span style=\"color: #800080;\">We were going to testify separately.<\/span> And the concern that both of us had in the meeting that I was having with him in September of 2015 was how to have that discussion without stepping across the Department policy of confirming or denying an investigation, separate policy from testifying.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;Obviously, we wanted to testify fully, fulsomely, and provide the information that was needed, but we were not at that point, in September of 2015, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>ready to confirm<\/em><\/span> that there was an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>investigation<\/em><\/span> into the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>email matter<\/em><\/span> &#8212; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>or deny it<\/em><\/span>,&#8221; Lynch added.<\/span> &#8220;We were sticking with policy, and that was my position on that.<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> I didn&#8217;t direct anyone to use specific phraseology. <\/span>When the Director asked me how to best to handle that, I said: What <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>I have been saying<\/em><\/span> is we have received a referral and <em>we are working on<\/em> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the matter<\/em><\/span>, <em>working on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the issue<\/span><\/em>, or we have all the resources we need<em> to handle <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the matter<\/span><\/em>, <em>handle <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the members told investigators that they thought the governor would \u201calready be aware of what was on his personal yearbook page,\u201d while Homan insisted on moving forward rather than revisiting photos from the past.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>According to the Washington Free Beacon, <em>Homan has been supporting Northam\u2019s political ambitions <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">since 2013<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">He donated <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>$1,000<\/em><\/span> to Northam\u2019s campaign for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>lieutenant governor<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> He then contributed <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>another $1,000<\/em><\/span> when Northam ran for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>governor<\/em><\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>later donated $10,000<\/em><\/span> to his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>inaugural committee in 2017<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>No conflict of interest there.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Once again, the cover-up was worse than the crime.\u00a0 Because, quite
