dogged attempts to divide us, as the <em>WSJ<\/em>&#8216;s Jason<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Riley records&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"wsj-article-headline\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-race-card-has-gone-bust-11563318876\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Race Card Has Gone Bust<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n<h3 class=\"sub-head\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-race-card-has-gone-bust-11563318876\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">America has never been fairer or more integrated, yet politicians obsess over wiping out discrimination<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/35yufw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-71401\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/35yufw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/35yufw.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/35yufw-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>In William Julius Wilson\u2019s 1978 book, \u201cThe Declining Significance of Race,\u201d the sociologist argued that racial discrimination was no longer the biggest barrier to black economic advancement. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">His <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>fellow liberals<\/em><\/span> were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>outraged<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Forty-one years later<\/em><\/span>, Mr. Wilson is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>still right<\/em><\/span> and the political left is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>still in denial<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Accusations of white racism are all the rage in Washington these days.<\/span> If you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>oppose school busing<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>you\u2019re a racist<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">If you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>want immigration laws enforced<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>you\u2019re a racist<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> If you\u2019re <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>against slavery reparations or support adding a citizenship question to the census or criticize minority members of Congress<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>you\u2019re a racist<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>One problem is that Donald Trump has adopted the kind of identity politics we usually associate with Democrats. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Another is that Democratic presidential contestants in search of black votes have taken racial pandering to new lows.<\/span> Pete Buttigieg, the 37-year-old mayor of South Bend, Ind., spoke for many of the candidates when he told National Public Radio last week that \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>white America\u201d needs to come to grips with what he says explains today\u2019s racial inequities<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Namely, the \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>systemic racism all around us<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>It\u2019s the air we breathe<\/em><\/span>.\u201d<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>We highly recommend reading the rest of Riley&#8217;s commentary, though we must make two observations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First, we&#8217;re not in agreement with the assessment Trump has adopted the Dims&#8217; identity politics.\u00a0 We&#8217;re rather of the opinion even Jason Riley, a Conservative writer deserving of great respect, has been adversely effected by the MSM&#8217;s relentless assault on The Donald, who is no more a racist than the&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/360dp8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-71440\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/360dp8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/360dp8.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/360dp8-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>2nd-worst<\/em><\/span> President in American history.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump simply puts <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Americans first<\/em><\/span>; NOT <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>illegal aliens<\/em><\/span>&#8230;NOT <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>anti-American Islamists<\/em><\/span>&#8230;and CERTAINLY NOT <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>four, foul-mouthed freshman Congresswomen\/people\/persons\/whatever constantly condemning their country with contrived, concocted shortcomings while extolling the virtues of undeniably failed Socialist\/Islamic alternatives<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Second, we disrespectfully suggest whatever ill-odor Pete Buttgag&#8217;s sensing in the air he&#8217;s breathing is owing to the fact he&#8217;s repeatedly had his nose in areas of the male anatomy our good Lord never intended other men to savor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In a related item, courtesy of <em>NRO<\/em>,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>A.G. The recipients included two nonprofits, Americans for Prosperity and the American Legislative Exchange Council; a trade association, American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers; an oil company,\u00a0Marathon Petroleum, and a coalition, Energy4US, that includes dozens of union locals and business groups. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The letters\u2014sent without notifying GOP committee members\u2014didn\u2019t mince words.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Mr. Pallone explained he was investigating the administration\u2019s move to reform Barack Obama\u2019s auto-efficiency standards. A change to these rules was a given on day one of the Trump presidency. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Yet Mr. Pallone insists they were the result of a \u201ccovert lobbying and social media campaign.\u201d<\/span> His <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>evidence<\/em><\/span> was a December 2018 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>New York Times investigation<\/em><\/span>, which sought to describe a straightforward policy push as a sinister, secret plot orchestrated by (who else?) the libertarian billionaire <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Koch brothers<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Mr. Pallone then got down to his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>unconstitutional demands<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He insisted that these private entities turn over \u201call documents exchanged and communications\u201d about the rule with any employee, current or former, of key federal departments and the office of the president.<\/span> The groups were also ordered to hand over documents and communications they\u2019d exchanged with each other. Mr. Pallone further demanded groups like AFP detail all of their efforts, \u201cwhether directly or indirectly,\u201d in \u201clobbying\u201d or \u201csocial media efforts\u201d related to the reform. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He gave them <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>two weeks<\/em><\/span> to sign up for his colonoscopy.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">..<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>good news<\/em><\/span> is that at least nonprofits <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>now understand the left\u2019s strategy<\/em><\/span>\u2014to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>scare<\/em><\/span> them (and those who affiliate with them) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>out of free-market or conservative advocacy<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> And they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>aren\u2019t rolling over for it<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong> <\/span>That\u2019s evidenced by two impressive letters that landed back recently on Mr. Pallone\u2019s desk, which I\u2019ve seen, one from AFP (which does receive Koch funding) and one from ALEC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Mark Holden, a member of AFP\u2019s board, pointed out to Mr. Pallone that the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>sum total of the Times\u2019s crack evidence<\/em><\/span> of AFP\u2019s involvement in a plot was that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>one<\/em><\/span> of AFP\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>3.2 million members<\/em><\/span> \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>spoke in favor<\/em><\/span>\u201d of the reform <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>at a public meeting in Michigan<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Mr. Holden, in a spirit of helpfulness, revealed that AFP had also submitted a comment in favor of the rulemaking\u2014<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>one<\/em><\/span> of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>600,000<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>rest<\/em><\/span> of the letter <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>served as a tutorial for Mr. Pallone on the First Amendment and its longstanding protection of free association and speech<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">AFP is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not<\/em><\/span> turning over documents.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Nor is ALEC<\/em><\/span>. Its own letter, penned by Washington attorney Cleta Mitchell, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>pointed Mr. Pallone to a very public record showing ALEC\u2019s support for a model policy to reform fuel-efficiency standards<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">She kindly included links to <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">several readily available tweets<\/span> highlighting ALEC\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">noncovert position<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> She drolly noted that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>her own investigation<\/em><\/span> turned up <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>nothing in committee rules that authorized Mr. Pallone to snoop into \u201cthe activities, programs, or internal operations of a non-governmental, private sector organization\u2019s policy development activities<\/em><\/span>.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>House Democrats are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>losing<\/em><\/span> the debate about auto efficiency as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the public passes on electric cars<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>so they\u2019ve moved to shutting down the other side<\/em><\/span>. <span
