text-decoration: underline;\">Imagine one vast airport that you cannot leave<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3dfgaa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73723\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3dfgaa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3dfgaa.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3dfgaa-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"drop\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>W<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>ith apologies to Margaret Atwood and a thousand other dystopian novelists, we do not have to\u00a0<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">theorize<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>about what an American police state would look like, because we\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>know<\/em><\/span>\u00a0what it looks like: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the airport<\/em><\/span>, that familiar totalitarian environment where Americans are disarmed, stripped of their privacy, divested of their freedom of speech, herded around like livestock, and bullied by bovine agents of \u201csecurity\u201d in a theatrical process that has an 85 percent failure rate <em>because <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">it isn\u2019t designed as a security-screening protocol at all<\/span> but as a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">jobs program for otherwise unemployable morons<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>An assessment we frankly find at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">little<\/span> harsh<\/em>.)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Now, when I hear the words \u201cotherwise unemployable morons,\u201d I think of Robert Francis O\u2019Rourke <span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>An assessment we frankly find <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">spot on<\/span>!<\/em>)<\/span> and his sad little presidential campaign, which suffered a little setback on Tuesday night when the gentleman who advertises himself as \u201cBeto\u201d tried out some tough-guy shtick on Pete Buttigieg, who is, whatever else you can say about him, a veteran of the Afghanistan campaign, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>one who rightly pointed out that he doesn\u2019t have to prove his \u201ccourage\u201d to the idiot son of a well-connected El Paso political family who has done almost nothing with his life other than show himself a reasonably effective fundraiser in the family business<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>O\u2019Rourke is a cretin<\/em><\/span>, and an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>ambitious<\/em><\/span> cretin at that.<\/span> And what are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>his<\/em><\/span> ambitions?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Turning America into the airport<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>borders may go unsecured<\/em><\/span> and the <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">felons may continue to run wild in the streets of this or that Democrat-controlled city<\/span><\/em>, but in Robert Francis O\u2019Rourke\u2019s America, <em>you<\/em> \u2014\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>you<\/em><\/span>, citizen \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>will do as you\u2019re told<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">It will be as petty and imbecilic as a trip through security at JFK, <em>with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one<\/span> important exception<\/em>: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>The airport has an exit<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second, he soundly suggests why&#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"article-header__title\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2019\/10\/elizabeth-warren-is-jussie-smollett\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=WIR%20-%20Sunday%202019-10-13&amp;utm_term=WIR-Smart\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000; text-decoration: underline;\">Elizabeth Warren Is Jussie Smollett<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n<h3 class=\"article-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-component=\"iframeEmbed\"><span class=\"article-header__subtitle\" style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2019\/10\/elizabeth-warren-is-jussie-smollett\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=WIR%20-%20Sunday%202019-10-13&amp;utm_term=WIR-Smart\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What they have in common turns out to have nothing to do with skin tone<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Naive-American.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73820\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Naive-American.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Naive-American.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Naive-American-300x147.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"drop\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>E<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>lizabeth Warren has a moving story about being fired from a teaching job because she was pregnant, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>a story that perfectly complements her political narrative that she is the tribune and champion of those who have been treated\u00a0unfairly\u00a0by the powerful<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Joe Biden has a moving \u2014 and horrifying \u2014 story about his wife and daughter being killed by a drunk driver, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>a story that similarly could not have been designed more perfectly to bolster his political image as a man who can be counted on to soldier on in the face of adversity<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Of course, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>neither story<\/em><em> is true<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Fiction<\/em>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>yes<\/em><\/span>. Deployed, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>as we are always told when these lies are exposed as lies<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>in the service of a larger truth<\/em><\/span>, a truth of which such habitual and irredeemable liars as Warren, Biden, Smollett \u2014 and Lena Dunham, and the so-called journalists of\u00a0<em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, and the perpetrators of a thousand phony campus hate-crime hoaxes \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>are the appointed apostles<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A few weeks ago, the headlines were full of angst and alarum over the fact that a young black girl attending a school at which Karen Pence teaches suffered a racial assault at the hands of three smug white boys who cut her hair.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Of course Karen Pence\u2019s name appeared in the headlines<\/em><\/span>: \u201c<span class=\"small_caps\">SIXTH GRADERS HOLD DOWN CLASSMATE, CUT HER DREADLOCKS AT PRIVATE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL WHERE KAREN PENCE TEACHES<\/span>,\u201d in\u00a0<em>Newsweek<\/em>\u2019s all-caps account.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Newsweek<\/em>\u00a0put Pence\u2019s name in the lead, too \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>in fact, it made sure to put her front and center even before it described what was alleged to have happened<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The smear was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>transparent<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>obvious even by the low standards of\u00a0Newsweek<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Of course <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>it was a lie<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Here\u2019s\u00a0<em>Newsweek<\/em>\u00a0now: \u201cAmari Allen, who accused her classmates of hurling verbal abuse at her and forcibly cutting her hair <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>has told reporters that she fabricated the event<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Allen family has formally apologized to both the school and the falsely accused boys.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<em>Newsweek<\/em>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>has not apologized to Karen Pence<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>who had no connection at all to the fictitious events save that they were purported to have happened at her place of employment<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">But the Democrats have invested a great deal in the storyline that Mike Pence must be some kind of crypto-racist, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>and it would follow that this tendency infests everyone and everything around him<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Warren\u2019s fictions, and Biden\u2019s, and Smollett\u2019s, and\u00a0<em>Newsweek<\/em>\u2019s smear of Karen Pence, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>all have in common that they are lies that have been put into the service of the campaign against Donald Trump in 2020<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(I assume, for the moment, that there will be such a campaign.)<\/span> There is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>supreme irony<\/em><\/span> in that: <em>Trump himself is not what one would call excessively scrupulous with the facts, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">but to resort to lies and inventions in the race against him is a confession of sorts<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which is why Fauxcahontas is the 2020 opponent of The Donald&#8217;s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>dreams<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Next up, writing at his <em>Morning Jolt<\/em>, Jim Geraghty details how House Dimocrats expect America to&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/rep-elijah-cummings-dies-unexpectedly\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399; And then the next morning the Speaker suggested the President is a cruel coward. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>But wait until you hear what <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>else<\/em><\/span> he said about her!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>This<\/em><\/span> is where the story gets <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>especially odd<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Mrs. Pelosi was joined at her\u00a0post-meeting press conference at the White House on Wednesday by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D., Md.).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Speaking of the President, Mr. Hoyer said, \u201dWe we were offended deeply by his treatment of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.\u201d<\/span> And according to all three Democratic leaders, the Speaker\u2019s departure was indeed triggered by one of a number of insults from Mr. Trump, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>but not the one you\u2019d expect<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Mr. Schumer reported that during their discussion of terrorists in Syria Mr. Trump \u201csaid that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>there are communists involved<\/em><\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>you guys might like that<\/em><\/span>.\u201d<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>At that point, based on their eyewitness accounts, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not one<\/em><\/span> of the three leading Democrats <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>got up to leave<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>But what they allegedly considered <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>beyond the pale<\/em><\/span> and led to the end of the meeting <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">was when Mr. Trump called the Speaker a \u201cthird-rate politician<\/span><\/em>.\u201d <span style=\"color: #008000;\">The #003300;\">Environmental scientists tend to respond to degradation of the natural world by ignoring, suppressing, or denying the resulting painful emotions while at work.<\/span> The risks that this entails are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>profound<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #003300;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Emotional trauma can substantially compromise self-awareness, imagination, and the ability to think coherently<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> As Charles Darwin put it, one \u201cwho remains passive when overwhelmed with grief loses [the] best chance of recovering elasticity of mind\u201d.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"p-4\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Academic institutes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>must allow environmental scientists to grieve well and thus emerge stronger from traumatic experiences to discover new insights about our rapidly changing world<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Much can be learned from other professions in which distressing circumstances are commonplace, such as health care, disaster relief, law enforcement, and the military. <span style=\"color: #003300;\">In these fields, well-defined organizational structures and active strategies exist for employees to anticipate and manage their emotional distress.<\/span> Effective systems can facilitate healthy grieving processes, enhance psychological recovery, and reduce the risk of long-term mental health impacts, potentially leading to better practice, decision-making, and resilience in future periods of trauma. <span style=\"color: #003300;\">Improved psychosocial working environments for scientists <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">might include<\/span><\/em> systematic training of employees, early-intervention debriefing after disturbing events, social support from colleagues and managers, and therapeutic counseling.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"p-5\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>pervasive illusion that scientists must be dispassionate observers is dangerously misguided<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #003300;\">Rather, grief and post-traumatic recovery can strengthen resolve and inspire scientific creativity.<\/span> <em>To understand and find solutions for our increasingly damaged natural ecosystems, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">environmental scientists must be
