href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/other\/president_trump_job_approval-6179.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">high<\/a><\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Independent<\/em><\/span> voters are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>against him<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">GOP congressmen are retiring from suburban districts that trend Democratic.<\/span> The generic ballot\u00a0is\u00a0about where it was\u00a0last cycle. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Trump\u2019s win in 2016<\/em><\/span>, when some <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>78,000 voters in three states gave him the Electoral underline;\"><em>liberals<\/em><\/span> are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>filled with apprehension<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> They are coming to recognize <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the potential size of the president\u2019s pool of supporters<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">They\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>fret<\/em><\/span>\u00a0over the capacities and liabilities <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>of the eventual Democratic nominee<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: recapitulate or expand his winning coalition <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">depends in large part on the identity of his opponent<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Given these <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>uncertainties<\/em><\/span>, it would be foolish to predict Trump\u2019s fate.<\/span> He <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>might<\/em><\/span> even be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>stronger than he appears<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Despite<\/em><\/span> demographic trends that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>continue to favor the Democrats<\/em><\/span>, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>despite<\/em><\/span> Trump\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>unpopularity<\/em><\/span> among <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>wide swathes of the electorate<\/em><\/span>, it will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>still be difficult<\/em><\/span> for the Democrats to prevail <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>against an incumbent president who has presided over a growing, low-unemployment economy and retains strong loyalty among key sectors of the electorate<\/em><\/span>,\u201d\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a style=\"color: #ff0000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/politics-and-elections\/reports\/2019\/10\/24\/476315\/path-270-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">write<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0Ruy Teixeira and John Halpin of the Center for American Progress. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">No conservatives <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>they<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>The Democratic difficulty <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>has a name<\/em><\/span>: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>t<\/em><\/span><em>he <\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Electoral College<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>The voters who put Trump over the top <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>have not abandoned him<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cSome <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>62 percent<\/em><\/span> of voters <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>approve<\/em><\/span> of Mr. Trump\u2019s job performance <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>in the 450 counties in which Mr. Trump outperformed 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney by 20 points or more<\/em><\/span>,\u201d according to the\u00a0<em>Journal<\/em>.<\/span> \u201cThat is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>up<\/em><\/span> from a job approval rating of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>43 percent<\/em><\/span> in those counties <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>during Mr. Trump\u2019s first year in office<\/em><\/span>.\u201d <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">It is also <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>17 points greater<\/em><\/span> than his overall job approval rating in\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/meet-the-press\/nbc-wsj-poll-record-share-voters-dislike-trump-personally-democrats-n1057036\">last month\u2019s\u00a0Journal\u00a0\/ NBC News poll<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>.<\/span> If Trump\u2019s demeanor and brand of national populism has <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>repelled the educated professionals who inhabit America\u2019s economic, political, and cultural institutions<\/em><\/span>, it has <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>failed<\/em><\/span> to drive away his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>core<\/em><\/span> supporters.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> It <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>may<\/em><\/span> even <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>attract<\/em><\/span> them.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">..<span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Which is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>why<\/em><\/span> the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>identity<\/em><\/span> of the Democratic nominee <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>matters<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A study by the Public Religion Research Institute in coordination with Brookings\u00a0found\u00a0that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>one third of Americans say their vote will depend on the winner of the Democratic primary<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> These uncommitted voters identify as moderate and politically independent. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">They don\u2019t <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>like<\/em><\/span> Trump, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>may<\/em><\/span> wind up in his column <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>if<\/em><\/span> the Democratic nominee strikes them as immoderate.<\/span><\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>(<em>Gee, given the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">current crop<\/span>, what are the chances of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">THAT<\/span>?!?<\/em>)<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>A Democratic nominee whose agenda is out of step with the public would be exactly what Trump needs to increase his support among his base and reclaim lost ground among independents and white voters with college degrees.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>As I write, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Elizabeth Warren<\/em><em> leads<\/em><\/span> in both Iowa <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>and<\/em><\/span> New Hampshire.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Now<\/em><\/span> you know <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>why<\/em><\/span> Democrats are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>worried<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Though we agree with most of Matt&#8217;s assessments, we believe he, like many Conservative pundits and writers, <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">grossly underestimates<\/span><\/em> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>discounts<\/em><\/span> Trump&#8217;s support among <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not only<\/em><\/span> college-educated Whites, but Blacks and Hispanics <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>as well<\/em><\/span>&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>ourselves<\/em><\/span> and almost <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>all of our friends<\/em><em> and readers included<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For more on the subject of the Dimocrats rapidly fading field, we turn to the\u00a0<em>Morning Jolt<\/em>, where Jim Geraghty details&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/john-durham-steps-in-to-investigate-the-trump-russia-probes-origins\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>A \u2018Wow\u2019 Poll That Should Freak Out Elizabeth Warren Supporters<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/04\/upshot\/one-year-from-election-trump-trails-biden-but-leads-warren-in-battlegrounds.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" removefontsize=\"true\" originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\" class=\"broken_link\">Elizabeth Warren is tied in Arizona, trails President Trump by 2 percentage points in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and trails Trump by 4 points in Michigan, Florida, and North Carolina<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>That\u2019s the sort of thing that will probably leave a lot of Democrats <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>breathing into paper bags<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Maybe Warren <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>resembles Hillary<\/em><\/span> Clinton <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>a lot more than her supporters want to admit<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>That&#8217;s not just a &#8220;pow&#8221; poll, it &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>conceal their shallow concepts<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #800000;\">But they\u2019re also Crichtonesque in the way <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>they foreclose any argument from the other side<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> If you\u2019re <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>against food stamps or children\u2019s health spending<\/em><\/span>, you\u2019re <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>heartless<\/em><\/span>, even though <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>they are inefficient, ineffective and rife with fraud<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #800000;\">And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>friendly sounding<\/em><\/span> No Child Left Behind and Common Core?<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Sorry<\/em><\/span>, math scores <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>went down<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Free<\/em><\/span> college, day care and medical care? <span style=\"color: #003300;\">Didn\u2019t <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Cuba<\/em><\/span> try that?<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Free<\/em><\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>price-controlled goods<\/em> <em>always<\/em><\/span> end up <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>like subsidized bread in the Soviet Union<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #003300;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>You get less of it and empty shelves<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The same is true of rent control, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>as California will soon learn<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>Unfortunately, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/proposed-california-rule-threatens-to-drive-out-plastics-californians-11573008063?mod=djemBestOfTheWeb\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">California never seems to learn anything from experience<\/span><\/span><\/a>!<\/em>)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Nobel Prize-winning economist<\/em><\/span> (who could be against <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>that<\/em><\/span>?) Joseph Stiglitz last year suggested <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>relief of Puerto Rico\u2019s burdensome debt<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #008000;\">Ah, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>relief<\/em><\/span>\u2014except <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>then<\/em><\/span> Puerto Rico would probably <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not be able to borrow again for a long time<\/em><\/span> (which applies to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>student loans<\/em><\/span> as well).<\/span> And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>then<\/em><\/span> there\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>social justice<\/em><\/span>.<span style=\"color: #008000;\"> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>No one<\/em><\/span> is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>for injustice<\/em><\/span>, but now <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>campus mobs are threatening free speech<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Many counterarguments are hard to frame. <span style=\"color: #008000;\">You can\u2019t just argue the opposite.<\/span><\/strong> <strong>Crichton reminds us to question the science, the data and the studies, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>and to argue outside the box you\u2019re put in<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Crichton would have a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>field day today<\/em><\/span>: democratic socialism, implicit bias, medical marijuana, open curriculum, small class sizes, surveillance capitalism, HOV lanes, electric-vehicle credits, renewable-fuel standards, carbon taxes\u2014<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>it never ends<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #800000;\">We\u2019re <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>sorely missing<\/em><\/span> the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>other side<\/em><\/span> of the argument.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking of Michael Crichton, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2005\/sep\/29\/comment.bookscomment\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Guardian&#8217;s dismissal of his testimony before the U.S. Senate back in 2005<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a>&#8230;along with <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/ng-interactive\/2019\/oct\/16\/the-guardians-climate-pledge-2019\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the publication&#8217;s pledge of undying support for the junk science of anthropogenic global warming<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span>&#8230;notwithstanding, the research for his books and movies, not to mention his medical degree from HARVARD, makes him <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>far more compelling and informed<\/em><\/span> than <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>others<\/em><\/span> The Guardian has recently championed as&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/3fdzs5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-74506\"
