{"id":75383,"date":"2019-12-05T19:10:58","date_gmt":"2019-12-06T00:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/?p=75383"},"modified":"2019-12-05T19:11:08","modified_gmt":"2019-12-06T00:11:08","slug":"the-daily-gouge-archive-wednesday-december-4th-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/?p=75383","title":{"rendered":"The Daily Gouge Archive, Wednesday, December 4th, 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>It&#8217;s Wednesday, December 4th, 2019&#8230;but before we begin, at a time when American Socialists contemptuously denigrate the greatest force for freedom the world has ever known, those seeking liberty from the yoke of continued Communist tyranny recognize reality:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T1qsoVLIJyY\" width=\"420\" height=\"235\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ANY questions<\/span><\/em>?!?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, here&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Gouge<\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We lead off our mid-week edition with the latest, utterly clueless composition courtesy of the world-wide Socialist conspiracy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"wsj-article-headline\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mr-schiffs-impeachment-opus-11575418600?mod=opinion_lead_pos1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mr. Schiff\u2019s Impeachment Opus<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h3 class=\"sub-head\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mr-schiffs-impeachment-opus-11575418600?mod=opinion_lead_pos1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">His overstatements reveal the weakness of the Democratic case<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/download-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-75313\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/download-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/download-2.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/download-2-300x204.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;&#8230;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The Starr report laid out <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>irrefutable evidence<\/em><\/span> that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Mr. Clinton lied to a grand jury and tampered with witnesses<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Those<\/em><\/span> were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>criminal offenses<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The evidence that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Richard Nixon obstructed justice<\/em><\/span> was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>also clear<\/em><\/span> once the tapes became public. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>By contrast<\/em><\/span>, Mr. Schiff\u2019s report <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>mentions no specific crime<\/em><\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is full of too many inferences and overbroad assertions to provide a convincing impeachment case<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>This explains why Mr. Schiff\u2019s report <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>won\u2019t gather a single Republican vote<\/em><\/span>, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>why this impeachment will remain partisan<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">On <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">this<\/span><\/em> score, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>we had to smile<\/em><\/span> at Mr. Schiff\u2019s high-toned invocation of the Founding Fathers\u2019 fear of \u201cexcessive factionalism.\u201d<\/span> He <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>claims<\/em><\/span> to be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>defending \u201cdemocracy&#8221; against \u201cthe power of faction\u201d that would dare defend Mr. Trump against impeachment<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Like<\/em><\/span> the President, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Mr. Schiff lacks the virtue of being self-aware<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frankly, he reminds us of either the Jacobins&#8230;who initiated the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution&#8230;or the equally-blood-thirsty Red Queen in <em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CENJTSMfwOM?start=58&amp;end=61&amp;\" width=\"420\" height=\"235\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Since we&#8217;re on the subject of those lacking the virtue of self-awareness, writing at his\u00a0<em>Morning Jolt<\/em>, Jim Geraghty suggests to the under-informed among us&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/the-national-review-shopping-list-you-need-for-the-holidays\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000; color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/natashakorecki\/status\/1200930292707536896?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1200930292707536896&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonexaminer.com%2Fnews%2Fwho-farmer-who-ignored-biden-in-iowa-diner-becomes-conservative-hero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noticed a gentleman in the Corn Stalk Cafe with no interest in the hubbub surrounding the former vice president<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">.<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>When she asked him moments later if he just wasn\u2019t a fan of Biden\u2019s, the man, who said he was a farmer in the Missouri Valley, <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">said he had never heard of Biden<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>This man <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>may be a terrific farmer and a swell guy<\/em><\/span> \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>or<\/em><\/span> he <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>may have just wanted to keep watching the game and wasn\u2019t interested in talking to a reporter<\/em><\/span> \u2014 and most people are just enjoying this as a funny anecdote about the indignities of running for president. <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>But Biden\u2019s been, on and off, one of the most prominent figures in American politics for about four decades now<\/em><\/span> \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>probably the entirety of this farmer\u2019s life<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> On the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>one hand<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>freedom must include the freedom to not care about what\u2019s going on in your country\u2019s government<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">But <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>on the other<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>self-government presupposes that the people know what they want and care about what they get<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Remember those \u201cJay-walking\u201d segments when Jay Leno hosted the Tonight Show, where he regularly found people on the street or in line at Universal Studios who couldn\u2019t name which country we fought in the<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WJlY9C7YWzI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Revolutionary War, or what the Emancipation Proclamation was<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>, what month Election Day was in, what the three branches of the government were, and so on? <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Some<\/em><\/span> of these people were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>accomplished in other fields<\/em><\/span>; they <em>simply saw<\/em> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>no need to know any of this<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>What happens to the <em>government being accountable to the people<\/em> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>if the people just aren\u2019t interested<\/em><\/span>?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>And it goes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>beyond<\/em><\/span> recognizing politicians who have been on TV and radio and in newspapers and magazines <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>for decades<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Americans<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2019\/10\/09\/americans-and-digital-knowledge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">score poorly on survey tests about using the Internet securely and safely<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>We\u2019re<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/science\/2019\/03\/28\/what-americans-know-about-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">okay on some basic science concepts, shaky on others<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>We <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>know<\/em><\/span> the basics of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Christianity<\/em><\/span>, but<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/2019\/07\/23\/what-americans-know-about-religion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">struggle with basic questions about other religions<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>. (Just 20 percent knew that Protestantism, not Catholicism, traditionally teaches that salvation comes from faith alone.)<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>(<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Assuming<\/span>, for sake of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">argument<\/span>, Protestantism and Catholicism are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">irreconcilably separate religions<\/span>!<\/em>)<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>One<\/em><\/span> of the reasons that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Medicare for All is polling poorly<\/em><\/span> in recent months <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is that<\/em><\/span> a segment of the public <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>just now<\/em><\/span> realized that the proposal <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>wouldn\u2019t let people keep their private insurance if they like it<\/em><\/span> \u2014 suggesting a lot of folks <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>missed<\/em><\/span> the \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>for all<\/em><\/span>\u201d part.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Every November<\/em><\/span>, federal, state, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>and<\/em><\/span> local governments <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>come to the people<\/em><\/span> and essentially <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>ask them what they think<\/em><\/span>: about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>who should represent them<\/em><\/span>, about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>referendums<\/em><\/span>, about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>school budgets<\/em><\/span>, even <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>who should be a judge or a sheriff<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">And a lot of people respond with a metaphorical, \u201cuh, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>I don\u2019t know<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>I\u2019ve never thought about it<\/em><\/span>.\u201d<\/span> We\u2019re <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>free to tune out<\/em><\/span>, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>that decision amounts to wasting a great gift that is still pretty rare in this world<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Right now<\/em><\/span>, only about\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>57 percent<\/em><\/span> of the world\u2019s countries <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>are considered fully Democratic with free and fair elections<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Freedom House\u2019s annual reports\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>have assessed the world moving in a less democratic direction every year for the past thirteen years<\/em><\/span> \u2014 <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">more countries with elections that aren\u2019t really free or fair, with coercion, fraud, or gerrymandering<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Because<\/em><\/span> <\/strong><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>if you can tune out the existence of Joe Biden, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">you can tune out a lot Progressives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why not <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>only permit<\/em><\/span> federal assistance to be spent on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>certain items<\/em><\/span>?\u00a0 Better yet, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>stop providing<\/em><\/span> anyone <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>dependent<\/em><\/span> on the government <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>anything other than a cell phone capable of dialing 911<\/em><\/span>?
