2019\u2019s Adult of the Year<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n

Attorney General William Barr has kept his promises and his independence<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n

“Person-of-the-year awards are almost always bestowed on men and women who already<\/em><\/span> meet with fawning praise.<\/strong> Let\u2019s instead<\/em><\/span> craft an award based on a person\u2019s willingness to speak truth to power<\/em><\/span>\u2014whether to the press, the boss, or to partisan operators<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Call it Adult of the Year<\/em>. The winner: Attorney General William Barr<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

President Trump nominated Mr. Barr in December 2018, and for a moment<\/em><\/span> he received<\/em> the respect he deserves<\/em><\/span>. The press had grown accustomed to demeaning all<\/span> Trump nominees<\/em>, but<\/em> was stymied by Mr. Barr\u2019s impressive career and bipartisan legal support<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> A Justice Department and Central Intelligence Agency veteran, he served as attorney general from 1990-91 with distinction. Media outlets had<\/em><\/span> to acknowledge his \u201cpedigree,\u201d and CNN<\/em><\/span> even quoted an unnamed Justice Department lawyer who had been \u201cnervous\u201d about a Trump pick but<\/span> pronounced Mr. Barr \u201c<\/em>a great choice\u201d because \u201che\u2019s tough he\u2019s principled and he\u2019s independent<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Barr remains<\/em><\/span> all those things. He has been vilified<\/em><\/span> precisely because<\/em><\/span> he has maintained an impartial view of the Justice Department and<\/em><\/span> has kept his promises.<\/span> The great hope\u2014and demand\u2014of the Russia-collusion crowd was that Mr. Barr\u2014as a longtime man of the institution<\/em>\u2014would circle the department\u2019s wagons<\/em><\/span>. His refusal to do so<\/em><\/span> has made him a threat<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

And so commenced<\/em><\/span> one of the more obvious<\/em><\/span>, not to mention nasty<\/em><\/span>, delegitimization campaigns in modern Beltway history<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>…”<\/p>\n

Second only to that waged against The Donald himself, along with Clarence Thomas, Bret Kavanaugh and Robert Bork, the man whose utterly undeserved vilification in the cause of the unrestricted slaughter of the unborn…<\/strong><\/p>\n

…set the tone for contemporary politics.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Though we share Kim’s high regard for Bill Barr, she’ll forgive us if we hold off popping the champagne ’til the indictments are handed down.<\/strong><\/p>\n
