Here’s a look back on the 2009 swine flu pandemic with eight key facts from the\u00a0CDC<\/a><\/em><\/span>:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. The flu strain responsible for the outbreak \u2014 influenza A (H1N1)pdm09\u00a0\u2014 was first\u00a0detected in America<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>\u00a0in April 2009<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

2. The strain represented a unique combination<\/em><\/span> of influenza viruses never before seen in humans or animals<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

3. The virus quickly spread globally<\/em><\/span>, primarily<\/em><\/span> affecting children and adults under 65<\/em><\/span> who lacked immunity to H1N1<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

4. The WHO declared the swine flu outbreak a pandemic<\/em><\/span> on June 11, 2009<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

5. Between April 12, 2009, and April 10, 2010<\/em><\/span>, the CDC estimates swine flu caused 60.8 million illnesses<\/em><\/span>, 273,304 hospitalizations<\/em><\/span> and 12,469 deaths<\/em><\/span> in the U.S<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

6. On Oct. 5, 2009<\/em><\/span>, (6 months, give or take<\/em>)<\/span> the U.S. began administering a newly approved H1N1 vaccine to select Americans<\/em><\/span>, with vaccination coverage expanding nationwide by that December<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

7. WHO declared an end<\/em><\/span> to the pandemic on Aug. 10, 2010<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

8. Globally, an estimated 151,700 to 575,400 people died from swine flu<\/em><\/span> in the first year of the pandemic.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

For reference, the COVID-19 pandemic has\u00a0sickened<\/em><\/span>\u00a01,323 Americans and killed<\/em><\/span> 38, as of March 12<\/span><\/em>. More than 127,00 cases<\/em><\/span> and 4,700 deaths<\/em><\/span> have been reported globally<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong>“<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
