We personally checked both links, and the figures are correct, at least for the 2018 flu fatalities; as we all know, the numbers of deaths due to the Wuhan virus have been, in many<\/em><\/span> if not most<\/em><\/span> cases,…”inflated<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span>“.\u00a0 Truth is, if today a man jumps off the Empire State Building or is hit by a train, and the corpse was found to contain the faintest<\/span><\/em> traces of the Peking pathogen, his death will be ruled<\/em><\/span> as Wuhan-related<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 Why<\/em><\/span>, inquiring minds want to know? Woodstock Occurred in the Middle of a Pandemic<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n

“In my lifetime, there was another<\/span><\/em> deadly flu epidemic in the United States. The flu spread from Hong Kong to the United States, arriving December 1968<\/em><\/span> and peaking a year later<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> It ultimately killed 100,000 people in the U.S.<\/em><\/span>, mostly over the age of 65, and one million worldwide<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Lifespan in the US in those days was 70<\/em><\/span> whereas it is 78<\/em><\/span> today. Population was 200 million<\/em><\/span> as compared with 328 million<\/em><\/span> today.<\/span> It was also a healthier<\/em><\/span> population with\u00a0low obesity<\/em><\/span>. If it would be possible to extrapolate the death data based on population and demographics, we might be looking at a quarter million deaths today<\/em><\/span> from this virus.<\/span> So in terms of lethality, it was as<\/em><\/span> deadly and scary as COVID-19 if not more so<\/span><\/em>, though we shall have to wait to see.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn 1968,\u201d\u00a0says<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/em>Nathaniel L. Moir in\u00a0National Interest<\/em>, \u201cthe H3N2 pandemic killed more individuals in the U.S. than the combined total number of American fatalities during both the Vietnam and<\/span><\/em> Korean Wars.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

And this happened<\/em><\/span> in the lifetimes of every American over 52 years of age<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I was 5 years old and have no memory of this at all. My mother vaguely remembers being careful and washing surfaces<\/em><\/span>, and encouraging her mom and dad to be careful<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Otherwise,\u00a0it\u2019s mostly forgotten today<\/em><\/span>. Why is<\/em><\/span> that? (We<\/span> have one<\/span> idea!<\/em>)<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Nothing closed<\/em><\/span>. Schools stayed open<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> All businesses did too<\/em><\/span>. You could go to the movies<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> You could go to bars and restaurants.<\/em><\/span> John Fund has a friend who\u00a0reports<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0having attended a Grateful Dead concert<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> In fact, people have no memory or awareness<\/em><\/span> that the famous Woodstock concert of August 1969 \u2013 planned in January<\/em><\/span> during the worse period of death<\/em><\/span> \u2013 actually occurred during a deadly American flu pandemic that only peaked globally six months later<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0There was no thought given to the virus<\/em><\/span> which, like ours today, was dangerous mainly for a non-concert-going demographic<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Stock markets didn\u2019t crash<\/em><\/span>. Congress passed no legislation<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The Federal Reserve did nothing<\/em><\/span>. Not a single governor acted to enforce social distancing, curve flattening<\/em><\/span> (even though hundreds of thousands<\/span><\/em> of people were hospitalized\u00a0(Why was there no a shortage of ventilators, and why weren’t ICUs overwhelmed<\/em>?!?)<\/span>), or banning of crowds<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0No mothers were arrested for taking their kids to other homes<\/em><\/span>. No surfers were arrested<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> No daycares were shut<\/em><\/span> even though there were more infant deaths with this virus than the one we are experiencing now. There were no suicides, no unemployment, no drug overdoses<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Media covered<\/em><\/span> the pandemic but it never became a big issue<\/span>.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As Bojan Pancevski in the\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0points<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0out, \u201cIn 1968-70, news outlets devoted cursory attention to the virus<\/em><\/span> while training their lenses on other events such as the moon landing and the Vietnam War, and the cultural upheaval of the civil-rights movements, student protests and the sexual revolution.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The only actions<\/em> governments took<\/em><\/span> was to collect data, watch and wait, encourage testing and vaccines, and so on. The medical community<\/em><\/span> took the primary responsibility for disease mitigation, as one might expect<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> It was widely assumed that diseases require medical not political responses<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not as if we had governments unwilling to intervene in other matters<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> We had the Vietnam War, social welfare, public housing, urban renewal, and the rise of Medicare and Medicaid. We had a president swearing to cure all poverty, illiteracy, and disease<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Government was as intrusive as it had ever been in history<\/em><\/span>. But for some reason<\/em><\/span>, there was no thought given to shutdowns<\/em><\/span>. (Let alone anyone contemplating the complete destruction of the American economy<\/em>.)\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Which raises the question: why was this different<\/em><\/span>? We will be trying to figure this one out for decades.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Was the difference that we have mass media<\/em><\/span> invading our lives with endless notifications blowing up in our pockets? Was there some change in philosophy such that we now think politics is responsible for all existing aspects of life<\/em><\/span><\/span>? Was there a political element<\/em><\/span> here in that the media blew this wildly out of proportion as revenge against Trump and his deplorables<\/em><\/span>?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
