“During President Trump\u2019s impeachment, former U.S. Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch testified to Congress that she knew little beyond an initial briefing and \u201cpress reports\u201d about Burisma Holdings<\/em><\/span>, the Ukrainian natural gas firm that had hired Vice President Joe Biden\u2019s son Hunter and was dogged by a corruption\u00a0<\/em><\/span>investigation<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u201cIt just wasn\u2019t a big deal<\/em><\/span>,\u201d she declared under oath on Oct. 11, 2019<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

…Yovanovitch, for instance, was specifically warned in an email by her top deputy in September 2016<\/em><\/span> \u2014 three years before her testimony<\/em><\/span> \u2014 that Burisma had hired an American firm with deep Democratic connections called Blue Star Strategies to \u201crehabilitate the reputation\u201d of the Ukrainian gas firm and that it had placed \u201cHunter Biden on its board<\/em><\/span>,\u201d the memos show.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>She also met directly with a representative for Burisma in her embassy office<\/em><\/span>, less than 45 days before Trump took office<\/em><\/span>, a contact she did not mention during her impeachment deposition<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The discussions about Burisma inside Yovanovitch\u2019s embassy were so extensive<\/em><\/span>, in fact, that they filled more than 160 pages of emails, memos and correspondence in fall 2016 alone<\/em><\/span>, according to the State Department records obtained under FOIA by the conservative group Citizens United.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

…<\/span>Yovanovitch<\/em><\/span>, who recently retired from State, did not respond Tuesday to a message sent to her private email seeking comment<\/em><\/span>. Her lawyer<\/em><\/span> during the impeachment proceedings, Lawrence S. Robbins, also did not respond to an emailed request for comment<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span>State officials declined comment<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

David Bossie, a former congressional investigator and current outside adviser to Trump who runs Citizen United, said the documents his group obtained raise questions about Yovanovitch\u2019s testimony<\/em><\/span> last fall and what else Congress may not know<\/em><\/span> about the embassy\u2019s involvement with the Hunter Biden-connected Burisma firm.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>“These new records clearly don’t support Ambassador Yovanovitch’s testimony under oath during [Rep. Adam] Schiff’s sham impeachment.<\/span> Her sworn testimony must be investigated and scrutinized just like in the case of General [Michael] Flynn<\/em><\/span>,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can’t<\/em><\/span> have two sets of rules<\/em><\/span>.”<\/span><\/strong><\/span>…”<\/p>\n

“Michael Flynn\u2019s sentencing judge Wednesday asked a former federal judge to explore whether Trump\u2019s former national security adviser should face a contempt hearing for perjury after he pleaded guilty to a crime for which he now claims to be innocent<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan also asked retired New York federal Judge John Gleeson to make a nonbinding<\/em><\/span> recommendation whether to order Flynn, who pleaded guilty to a crime and now claims innocence, to explain why he should not be found in criminal contempt for lying under oath in his guilty plea<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sullivan\u2019s request to Gleeson comes one day<\/em><\/span> after Sullivan had put on hold<\/em><\/span> the Justice Department\u2019s bid to drop charges against Flynn, saying he expects independent groups and legal experts to argue against the move<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u201cThe Court exercises its inherent authority to appoint The Honorable John Gleeson (Ret.) as amicus curiae to present arguments in opposition to the government\u2019s Motion to Dismiss<\/em><\/span>,\u201d Sullivan wrote in a two-page order<\/strong><\/span>…”<\/p>\n
