priorities<\/em><\/span>,&#8221; following calls from many to &#8220;defund the police.&#8221; <span style=\"color: #800080;\">According to the\u00a0<em>Minneapolis Star Tribune<\/em>, Bender sees the city&#8217;s <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">potentially revamped public safety force<\/span><\/em> as <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">potentially sending social workers or other civilian personnel into situations that are traditionally handled by police<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soooo&#8230;one of the ideas being America in the aftermath of George Floyd\u2019s death.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>If<\/em><\/span> we live in a liberal world that <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Christianity makes possible<\/span><\/em>, George Floyd\u2019s death is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>singular transgression<\/em><\/span>, which <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>law can and will punish<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> George Floyd was a\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>person<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">So, too, was the <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">policeman who killed him<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Persons<\/em><\/span> are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>protected<\/em><\/span> by the law; and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>those persons granted policing authority<\/em><\/span> by the liberal state have a somber responsibility to use their vested authority <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>to protect persons<\/em><\/span> rather than to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>harm them<\/em><\/span>.<span style=\"color: #333399;\"> That is why the death of a civilian by police hands will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>always<\/em><\/span> attract attention.<\/span> The same\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>original sin<\/em><\/span>\u00a0that is the basis for establishing the category of persons is also the reason <span underline;\"><em>white<\/em><\/span>\u00a0nation, and <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">still is<\/span><\/em>? <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>This is the position of many on the American left today<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">It is a position that holds that the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">black\u00a0man<\/span>, George Floyd, and the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">white\u00a0police officer<\/span> responsible for his death, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>are representatives of blood nations, not singular persons<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The murder of one by the other is representative of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>collective murder<\/em><\/span> of one people by the other. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">American law <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>cannot bring about justice<\/em><\/span>, because each blood nation <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">has its own justice<\/span><\/em>, from which <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>marginalized<\/em><\/span> blood nations <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>can never benefi<\/em><\/span>t.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>American law is white law<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: descendants of Adam are\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>persons<\/em><\/span>, to be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>treated equally before the law<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Pagan blood vengeance<\/em><\/span>, we would contentedly conclude, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is the style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Christian way forward<\/em><\/span>, through which we will recognize <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the singular person of George Floyd<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the transgression that ended his life<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>and the law through which man does what he can to bring about justice<\/em><\/span>, in a broken world that God alone can heal.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Americans today are torn between these two distinctly different understandings of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>what justice entails<\/em><\/span>: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>pagan blood payment<\/em><\/span> between peoples, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>which treats persons as mere proxies<\/em><\/span>; or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>liberal justice<\/em><\/span>, whose foundation is, finally, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Christian understanding of persons<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Paganism<\/em><\/span>, let us remember, is the\u00a0<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">natural<\/span><\/em>\u00a0condition of man, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the condition for which there is no remedy without the divine antidote that breaks in upon the natural world and informs us that justice entails more than cathartic rage that settles scores<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">An observer with a trained eye will see in the aftermath of George Floyd\u2019s death an America that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>cannot decide between pagan justice and liberal justice<\/em><\/span>, and which has settled into a dangerous and unstable intermediate arrangement <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">having elements of both<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> Logic would dictate that <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">either we go back to guiltless paganism or go forward to guilt-ridden, person-centered, liberalism<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">We have <span style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Rather than bend to China\u2019s pressure on Taiwan, the United States should consider rebuilding #ff0000;\"><strong>Taiwan has equally importance as a political, social, and economic symbol of a free Chinese people. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Nothing in China\u2019s long history or experience requires that it must fall subject to a brutal one-party dictatorship.<\/span> Taiwan, together with Singapore and (before the CCP took it over) Hong Kong, proves that an authentically Chinese society rooted in Confucian traditions can live side-by-side with a constitutional democracy that protects individual rights and free markets. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Taipei, not Beijing, can serve as the model for a future unified and democratic China.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic only highlights the differences between Taiwanese democracy and the CCP\u2019s authoritarianism. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">A mass of evidence shows that Beijing covered up the outbreak, suppressed researchers and doctors who tried to raise the alarm, and even allowed travelers from Wuhan to fly to the rest of the world even while quarantining them within China.<\/span> By contrast, Taiwanese officials closely monitored the outbreak on the mainland, quickly shut off travel, and instituted a strict testing and contact tracing regime. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">In a country of 23 million, the Taipei government has limited the coronavirus to only 440 cases and seven deaths.<\/span> Taiwan, not the CCP, has proven itself as a reliable, transparent partner for international cooperation in facing the world\u2019s deadliest problems, from global pandemics to North Korea\u2019s nuclear weapons.<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"> If a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>free, democratic regime ruled the mainland<\/em><\/span>, it would benefit <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not only<\/span><\/em> the people of China <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>but also the rest of the world<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Washington should reconsider whether to welcome an independent Taiwan back into the common defense of free nations from a rising China. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">The U.S. can also promote the recognition that Taiwan, not the CCP, is the true heir of four thousand years of Chinese civilization.<\/span> The CCP seeks to absorb a Taiwan whose very existence preserves the memory of the Chinese past. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Taiwan\u2019s survival keeps alive the memory of the CCP\u2019s failures against Japan (the Communist Army fought only one major battle against the Japanese) and the horrors of Mao\u2019s Great Leap Forward (Frank Dikotter estimates about 45 million died) and Cultural Revolution.<\/span> The CCP wants to obliterate all recollection of its appalling past. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">But the real interests of the Chinese people, and of the world at large, require <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>clear-eyed recognition<\/em><\/span> of the CCP\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>often disastrous impact on Chinese history<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Unless the CCP is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>forced<\/em><\/span> into an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>honest confrontation with its past<\/em><\/span>, its <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>paranoia<\/em><em> about the outside world<\/em><\/span> and its <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>resistance to an open society<\/em><\/span>
