Goodbye, Washington DC<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h1>\n

Mayor Bowser broke her contract with residents like me. So we\u2019re leaving<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n

“During the last night in my condo in DC, I had to walk my dog an extra lap around the block because a crazy person was outside screaming obscenities. I wasn\u2019t afraid.<\/span> I just didn\u2019t feel like getting into it with him or having to listen to his story\u2014his \u201cLet me just tell you something,\u201d attempt to get money from me. It was 1 A.M., and I was tired from a night out\u2014but more so, just tired in general.<\/span> Tired<\/em><\/span> of it all<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

…<\/span>We put up with a lot in order to live in the city: lousy transportation, noise, traffic, pollution, and our fair share of homeless people.<\/span> It\u2019s all just a part of living in urban America. But I\u2019ll gladly tolerate sirens and car horns in exchange for a new restaurant on the corner.<\/span> For major league sports, performing arts, museums, and bars, I will put up with the occasional crazy guy on the street, metro derailment, or gridlocked traffic because an intersection is blocked by some group \u201craising awareness\u201d about something or other. That\u2019s just the price of the urban lifestyle, and as a life-long city dweller, I knew what I was paying for\u2014and with what.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I did my part<\/em><\/span>, too. My role<\/em><\/span> in the fabric of urban society, overlooked but essential<\/em><\/span>, was to spend my money<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Eat, drink, shop, spend, tip, pay<\/span><\/em>. And man<\/em><\/span>, did I pay<\/em><\/span>: taxes, rents, then a mortgage and HOA fees.<\/span> I paid taxes on things the government deemed \u201cbad\u201d for me<\/em><\/span>, like alcohol and cigarettes<\/em><\/span>;\u00a0 taxes on services<\/em><\/span> which organized labor deemed \u201cbad\u201d for them<\/em><\/span>, like rideshare<\/em><\/span>. I paid gas tax, cable tax, cell phone tax<\/em><\/span>, and<\/em><\/span>, of course, income tax<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Lots<\/em><\/span> of income tax<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

All I asked in return was relative safety and to be left alone to enjoy the city.<\/span> City-living in America, for decades, meant tolerating mild inconveniences so that you could be left alone<\/em><\/span>, alongside millions of others<\/em><\/span>. That<\/em><\/span> was the tacit pact<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

And DC broke it<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

…<\/span>I\u2019ve left<\/em><\/span>\u2014we are leaving<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span>…”<\/p>\n

And the District of Columbia will be the poorer for his leaving…and not only economically.\u00a0 Something tells us the author won’t be the last to leave…either D.C. or the numerous other<\/em><\/span> urban hellholes Progressive policies have excavated over recent decades.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here’s the juice: THE<\/em><\/span> primary responsibility of ANY<\/em><\/span>\u00a0government is protecting the life and property of its citizens<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 Truth is, be it Seattle, Baltimore, Chicago, New York, Portland, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Louisville, Detroit, Atlanta, Austin or Washington, D.C., Dimocratic-controlled cities are failing miserably<\/em><\/span> in performing their very reason for being<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n
