contribute to unfair disparities in grades<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">For example, a student may have struggles <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">related to home or other responsibilities<\/span><\/em> that impact their ability to <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">turn in work on time or learn content before a test<\/span><\/em>.<\/span>\u00a0Common grading practices such as averaging a student\u2019s grade over time <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">can disadvantage students<\/span><\/em> who started the year behind grade level and can discredit the progress a student has made,\u00a0<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">experts<\/span><\/em> have said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">With the new policy adopted Tuesday, academic grades\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>will only be about showing progress toward \u201cmastery of standards<\/em><\/span>,\u201d rather than\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>rewarding students for completing a certain quantity of work<\/em><\/span>, according to San Diego Unified\u2019s\u00a0new grading policy, which will be implemented over this year and next.<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>This approach is called \u201cstandards-based grading,\u201d which has been the norm for elementary grades in San Diego Unified for years, said Kisha Borden, president of the teachers union.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008080;\">The changes approved Tuesday will primarily impact middle and high school students.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Students will\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>no longer be docked<\/em><\/span>\u00a0in their academic grades\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>for turning work in late or other factors related to work habits<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Those<\/span><\/em> aspects of student behavior <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will be judged in a separate<\/span><\/em> citizenship grade.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Rather than getting\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>one chance<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>to get a good grade, students will be given\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>additional chances to revise their work and show improvement<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008080;\">\u201cThe idea that you can make a mistake and go back and fix it is powerful and allows kids to learn and grow in a more reparative and less punitive environment,\u201d said Amy Wood, a parent at Lewis Middle and Franklin Elementary, during the grading presentation at the school board meeting Tuesday.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Under the <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">new<\/span><\/em> grading policy, when a student\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is caught cheating<\/em><\/span>, schools\u00a0<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">must give the student a chance to reflect on what he or she did<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">repair trust and receive counseling or other help<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008080;\">Instructional Support Officer Nicole DeWitt said the district <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">also<\/span><\/em> is exploring offering \u201ccredit\/no credit\u201d grades to students with extenuating circumstances.<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>For years, some teachers and experts have pointed to\u00a0issues with traditional grading practices.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008080;\">Typically grading is often arbitrary and differs widely from one teacher to another.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Poor grades often are\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>cemented<\/em><\/span>\u00a0into a student\u2019s record\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration:
