of American society.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Matthew was 1 of 11 people who helped draft the Centers for Disease Control&#8217;s\u00a0ethical framework\u00a0for allocating COVID-19 vaccines. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">She is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>also<\/em><\/span>\u00a0listed\u00a0as a &#8220;<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">health equity<\/span><\/em>&#8221; consultant to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">voted in November<\/span><\/em> to vaccinate essential workers <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">before the elderly<\/span><\/em>,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>partly<\/em><\/span> on the grounds\u00a0that <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the elderly skew white<\/span><\/em>\u2014<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">only to pull back Sunday in the face of outrage from across the political spectrum<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>The committee\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/acip\/meetings\/downloads\/slides-2020-12\/slides-12-20\/02-COVID-Dooling.pdf\" class=\"broken_link\">openly acknowledged<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>\u00a0that its initial plan <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>would result in more deaths than &#8220;vaccinating older adults first<\/em><\/span>.&#8221; <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">But<\/span><\/em>, the panel said, the plan would <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reduce racial disparities<\/span><\/em>\u2014something <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">they<\/span><\/em> deemed <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">more important than saving lives<\/span><\/em>\u2014<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>because essential workers<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>unlike<\/em><\/span> adults over 65, are <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">disproportionately black and Hispanic<\/span><\/em>, the two groups that have borne the brunt of the pandemic.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How<\/span><\/em> did the committee reach <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">that<\/span><\/em> conclusion? <span style=\"color: #333399;\">According to meeting minutes, presentation slides, public statements, and even civil-rights directives, the now-scuttled plan <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>didn&#8217;t<\/em><\/span> come out of thin air.<\/span> Rather, it <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reflects the reductive, racialist worldview that is rapidly gaining ground in\u00a0education, media,\u00a0nonprofits, and now the U.S federal government<\/span><\/em>\u2014a worldview with concrete policy implications <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and<\/span><\/em> concrete human costs.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">That<\/span><\/em> policy agenda was seeded by outside consultants like Matthew, who\u00a0told\u00a0the\u00a0<em>New York Times\u00a0<\/em>that racial inequality &#8220;<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">requires us to prioritize by race<\/span><\/em>.&#8221; <span style=\"color: #333399;\">But it was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>also<\/em><\/span> seeded by the <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CDC itself<\/span><\/em>, which in September\u00a0<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/christopherrufo.com\/cdc-violates-presidential-order-with-critical-race-theory-training-program\/\" class=\"broken_link\">hosted<\/a><\/span><\/em>\u00a0a series of trainings on &#8220;racism, sexism, and other systems of structured inequality,&#8221; in <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">direct violation<\/span><\/em> of President Trump&#8217;s\u00a0executive order\u00a0<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">barring<\/span><\/em> such programs from government agencies.<\/span> And it was <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">even<\/span><\/em> seeded by the <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">chairman of the CDC committee<\/span><\/em>, Jos\u00e9 Romero, who said in July that <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">minorities &#8220;need to be moved to the forefront<\/span><\/em>&#8221; a word that in Twain\u2019s time was as common as mud and therefore completely unremarkable on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The issue concerning the appropriateness of designating \u201cHuckleberry Finn\u201d and \u201cTom Sawyer\u201d in their original and unexpurgated state as assigned reading in English classes in the public schools has troubled teachers and administrators since at least the 1990s.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>I am <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> concerned here<\/span><\/em> with the question of whether the bowdlerization of these texts is defensible, a moral imperative, or an offense against literature\u2014New South published a sanitized edition of the two books in 2011\u2014but rather <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">with the paradoxical character of postmodern political correctness<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">That<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> character<\/span><\/em> was exposed, also in 2011, when the Virginia Department of Education adopted a textbook, \u201cOur Virginia: Past and Present\u201d by Joy Masoff, <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">which contained the claim that \u201cthousands of Southern blacks fought in the Confederate ranks<\/span><\/em>, including two under the command of Stonewall Jackson.\u201d<\/span> <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">That<\/span><\/em> prompted <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anger and indignation on the left<\/span><\/em> and <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">an advisory to teachers from the department to ignore the passage<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Yet it is a <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">historically confirmed fact<\/span><\/em> that <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">many<\/span><\/em> Southern blacks, <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">freemen as well as slaves<\/span><\/em>, <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fought on the side of the Confederacy<\/span><\/em>, as attested to by the historian William Freehling and documented by Harvard\u2019s Prof. John Stauffer in an\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a class=\"icon none\" style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theroot.com\/yes-there-were-black-confederates-here-s-why-1790858546\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">essay<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0for TheRoot.com.<\/span> <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Even so<\/span><\/em>, many Civil War historians <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">continue to deny it for ideological reasons<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The dispute over the existence of black Confederate soldiers is a <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">clear instance<\/span><\/em> of how radical progressives, in their war on America, <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">have been pursuing two contradictory aims at once<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">First<\/span><\/em>, they have worked tirelessly to expose what they view as <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the fundamentally and indelibly racist character of America from its inception<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Thus the central purpose of the \u201c1619 Project,\u201d conceived by Nikole Hannah-Jones and subsequently developed by the\u00a0<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; own institutions.<\/span> Consider the controversy over a now-retracted paper in the prestigious science journal Nature Communications, <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">which shows how political fashions can dictate what research outcomes are acceptable<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">In November three NYU Abu Dhabi researchers came under fire for an\u00a0article\u00a0questioning the popular academic view that young women scientists are better off with female mentors.<\/span> Their \u201cscience of science\u201d study analyzed the impact of millions of scientific papers with junior and senior authors and drew conclusions about the effect of mentorship on careers.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>\u201cWhile current diversity policies encourage same-gender mentorships to retain women in academia,\u201d the paper says in the abstract, \u201cour findings raise the possibility that <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">opposite-gender<\/span><\/em> mentorship <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">may actually increase<\/span><\/em> the impact of women who pursue a scientific career.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: #800000;\">On Monday Nature Communications <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">retracted the article<\/span><\/em>,\u00a0writing\u00a0that it wants to <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">make sure<\/span><\/em> \u201cthat the review process takes into account the dimension of <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">potential
