said on Dec. 2.<\/span> \u201cWithin days after the election, we witnessed an orchestrated effort to anoint the winner, even while many key states were still being counted.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>In a way, Trump was right.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>There <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">was<\/span><\/em> a conspiracy unfolding behind the scenes, one that both curtailed the protests and coordinated the resistance from CEOs. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Both surprises were the result of an informal alliance between left-wing activists and business titans.<\/span> The pact was formalized in a terse, little-noticed joint statement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and AFL-CIO published on Election Day. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Both sides would come to see it as a sort of implicit bargain\u2013inspired by the summer\u2019s massive, sometimes destructive racial-justice protests\u2013in which the forces of labor came together with the forces of capital to keep the peace and oppose Trump\u2019s assault on democracy.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>The handshake between business and labor was just one component of a vast, cross-partisan campaign to protect the election\u2013an <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">extraordinary shadow effort<\/span><\/em> dedicated <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not to winning the vote<\/em><\/span> but to <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ensuring it would be free and fair, credible and uncorrupted<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">For more than a year, a loosely organized coalition of operatives scrambled to shore up America\u2019s institutions as they came under simultaneous attack from a remorseless pandemic and an <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">autocratically inclined President<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> Though much of this activity took place on the left, it was separate from the Biden campaign and crossed ideological lines, with crucial contributions by nonpartisan and conservative actors. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The scenario the shadow campaigners were <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">desperate<\/span><\/em> to stop was <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not a Trump victory<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> It was an election <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>so calamitous that no result could be discerned at all<\/em><\/span>, a failure of the central act of democratic self-governance that has been a hallmark of America since its founding.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Their work touched every aspect of the election.<\/span> They got states to change voting systems and laws <span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>in many if not all instances, illegally change them!<\/em>)\u00a0<\/span>and helped secure hundreds of millions in public and private funding. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">They fended off voter-suppression lawsuits, recruited armies of poll workers and got millions of people to vote by mail for the first time.<\/span> They <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">successfully pressured social media companies to take a harder line against disinformation<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>such as news of Hunter Biden&#8217;s laptop!<\/em>)<\/span> and used data-driven strategies to fight viral smears.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">This is the inside story of the conspiracy to save the 2020 election, based on access to the group\u2019s inner workings, never-before-seen documents and interviews with dozens of those involved from across the political spectrum.<\/span> It is the story of an <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unprecedented, creative and determined campaign<\/span><\/em> whose success also reveals <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>how close the nation came to disaster<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cEvery attempt to interfere with the <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">even though it sounds like a paranoid fever dream<\/span><\/em>\u2013<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a well-funded cabal of powerful people, ranging across industries and ideologies, working together behind the scenes to influence perceptions, change rules and laws, steer media coverage and control the flow of information<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> They <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">were not rigging<\/span><\/em> the election; they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>were fortifying<\/em><\/span> it<\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Four brief thoughts immediately come to mind:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>(1). to borrow a phrase from Cordell Hull, in all our nearly 10 years of Conservative blogging, we&#8217;ve never seen an article more crowded with infamous falsehoods and distortions &#8211; on a scale so huge we never imagined until today that any publication on this planet was capable of uttering them.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>(2). congressperson&#8230;er, congressper<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>sister<\/em><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/02\/07\/rep-cori-bush-scolded-after-supporting-st-louis-jail-riot\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cori Bush<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a> (George and Jeb&#8217;s missing sister?!?), who, curiously enough, observed of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>comparatively peaceful protestors<\/em><\/span> who breached the Capitol&#8217;s defenses last month:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">There are rioters roaming the halls of the Capitol. <span style=\"color: #008080;\">I <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">saw<\/span><\/em> them with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>my own eyes<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Our country deserves better<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><span
