color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2021\/jun\/13\/newly-respectable-wuhan-lab-theory-remains-fanciful\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Robert Grimes writes that<\/a><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em>Alternatively, there is hypothesis two: a lab leak. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">For this to be viable, we are obliged to add additional assumptions. We\u2019d need to accept that the virus was engineered and subsequently released by accident or design.<\/span> More damning for this narrative are the implicit temporal conditions it imposes: Wuhan, a city with a population of more than 11 million, with thriving wet markets, has millions of human-animal interactions each day, occasions when a virus could jump to humans. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">But the city has only a single virology lab where, accidentally or by design, everything would have to go wrong at once to yield the same result.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">First<\/span><\/em>, the city has\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>two<\/em><\/span>\u00a0labs researching novel coronaviruses in bats, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not\u00a0one<\/em><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the Wuhan Centers for Disease Control. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Second<\/em><\/span>, an accidentally released virus is not necessarily an engineered one.<\/span> Third, for \u201ceverything to go wrong at once\u201d requires a scratch or bite from a bat, an improperly sealed mask, improperly disposed waste, or other biological material.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/an-unnerving-review-of-accidents-in-high-level-labs-handling-viruses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lab accidents happen with unnerving regularity<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 \u201cneedle sticks and other through the skin exposures from sharp objects; <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">dropped containers or spills and splashes of liquids containing pathogens;<\/span> bites or scratches from infected animals; <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">pathogens manipulated outside of a biosafety cabinet or other equipment designed to protect exposures to infectious aerosols;<\/span> failure to follow safety procedures; <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">failure or problems with personal protective equipment;<\/span> mechanical or equipment failure; <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">and failure to properly inactivate pathogens before transferring them to a lower biosafety level lab for further research.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>We\u2019re <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>18 months<\/em><\/span> into this pandemic; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>how<\/em><\/span> are op-eds in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>major<\/em><\/span> publications <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>still<\/em><\/span> making these mistakes?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Or, perhaps more accurately, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>why<\/em><\/span>?\u00a0 We&#8217;re gonna go out on a limb and&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/balls3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-94694\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/download-5.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/download-5.jpeg 420w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/download-5-300x175.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>On Monday,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/14\/politics\/china-nuclear-reactor-leak-us-monitoring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN reported what could be an enormously consequential scoop<\/a>:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em>The US government has spent the past week assessing a report of a leak at a Chinese nuclear power plant, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">after a French company that part owns and helps operate it warned of an \u201cimminent radiological threat<\/span>,\u201d according to US officials and documents reviewed by CNN.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>The warning included an accusation that the Chinese safety authority was raising the acceptable limits for radiation detection outside the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant in Guangdong province in order to avoid having to shut it down, according to a letter from the French company to the US Department of Energy obtained by CNN.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">While US officials have deemed the situation <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">does not currently<\/span> pose a severe safety threat to workers at the plant or Chinese public, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">it is unusual that a foreign company would unilaterally reach out to the American government for help when its Chinese state-owned partner is yet to acknowledge a problem exists<\/span>.<\/span> The scenario <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">could<\/span> put the US in a complicated situation should the leak continue or become more severe without being fixed.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em>However, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">concern was significant enough<\/span> that the National Security Council held multiple meetings last week as they monitored the situation, including two at the deputy level and another gathering at the assistant secretary level on Friday, which was led by NSC Senior Director for China Laura Rosenberger and Senior Director for Arms Control Mallory Stewart, according to US officials.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>The Taishan Nuclear Power Plant in Guangdong Province is right next to Macau, which is right across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">The whole area is\u00a0effectively <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one sprawling mega-city<\/span><\/em>\u00a0that houses an\u00a0astounding <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>65 million people<\/em><\/span>, which makes it a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>particularly terrible place<\/em><\/span> to have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>any<\/em><\/span> kind of nuclear accident or radiation leak.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--center ad-unit--inline\">\n<div class=\"ad-unit__inner\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>It will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>probably not surprise you<\/em><\/span> to hear that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the Chinese government insists everything is fine<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><strong>This isn\u2019t picking on China. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">This is a problem for<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em> any<\/em><\/span> regime that turns <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>acknowledging any problem<\/em><\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>admitting any mistake<\/em><\/span> into a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>major threat to careers<\/em><\/span>, which <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>turns<\/em><\/span> those mistakes and problems into <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>major threats to lives<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Authoritarian and totalitarian regimes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>realize<\/em><\/span> that their legitimacy <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>does not<\/em><\/span> stem from popular support, so they rely on an image of being <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>all-knowing and all-powerful<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Any<\/em><\/span> screw-up <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>undermines that image<\/em><\/span> of supremacy and all-encompassing hyper-competence.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Reporting<\/em><\/span> a problem becomes a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>dangerous move<\/em><\/span> that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>could<\/em><\/span> lead to damaging the reputation of everyone involved. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Thus, when something goes wrong in an authoritarian regime, the first instinct is always to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>deny<\/em><\/span> the problem exists, then <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">downplay<\/span><\/em> how severe the consequences could be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>and hope that somehow, people don\u2019t notice<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The Soviet Union\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/world-news\/soviet-documents-reveal-cover-ups-at-chernobyl-nuclear-plant-before-1986-disaster-2422532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">covered up failed safety tests before the Chernobyl disaster<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>\u00a0and then\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2201677-chernobyl-disaster-how-the-soviet-unions-cover-story-was-blown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">downplayed the seriousness of the crisis for days<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rez ipsa loquitur, people, rez ipsa loquitur.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Since we&#8217;re on the subject of the ChiComs and their worldwide network of paid promoters, former CDC director\u00a0Robert Redfield (who&#8217;s NOT on Xi&#8217;s payroll) told\u00a0<em>Fox News<\/em>\u00a0Tuesday\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/former-cdc-head-who-too-compromised-to-conduct-covid-origin-probe\/?utm_source=email&amp;utm_medium=breaking&amp;utm_campaign=newstrack&amp;utm_term=24155909\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>the World Health Organization was too compromised to conduct a thorough investigation of the origins of the coronavirus<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span>:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><em>I think they were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">highly<\/span> compromised.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Clearly<\/span>, they were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">incapable<\/span> of compelling China to adhere to the treaty agreements that they have on global health, because helped cement in the American mind,\u201d he would either have to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>lie<\/em><\/span> about history, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>ignore<\/em><\/span> it, or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>condemn<\/em><em> his entire life\u2019s work purely on the basis of his race<\/em><\/span> \u2014 thereby <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>committing the very sins<\/em><\/span> that, when they are sitting in their Motte, \u201canti-racists\u201d such as Deggans strenuously deny they are demanding. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Perhaps anticipating this objection, Deggans concludes his litany of complaints by submitting that Hanks has failed to use his position to tell\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>other<\/em><\/span>\u00a0important stories.<\/span> But, even <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>if<\/em><\/span> this were true, it would <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>still<\/em><\/span> represent a trap. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Tom Hanks could announce tomorrow that he intends to spend the rest of his life making films of which Eric Deggans approves, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>within hours<\/em><\/span> he would be accused of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>taking up spaces that belong to black actors, writers, producers, and directors<\/em><\/span>; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>within days<\/em><\/span>, it would be said that he was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>undermining important \u201cvoices of color<\/em><\/span>\u201d; and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>within a month<\/em><\/span>, he\u2019d be charged with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>possession of a \u201cwhite savior complex<\/em><\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>In the grand scheme of things, Eric Deggans\u2019s view of Tom Hanks is not going to have a profound effect on the future of the United States. <span style=\"color:
