color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/magazine\/2021\/07\/12\/dewey-defeats-critical-race-theory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">believe in John Dewey\u2019s vision for public schoolin<\/a><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/magazine\/2021\/07\/12\/dewey-defeats-critical-race-theory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">g<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0as an institution meant to mutually assimilate diverse children to each other, and to provide a civic and social touchstone.<\/span> They want school to give their kids a few critical skills, extracurriculars to support the development of character, to prepare the brightest pupils for college, to give all students a basic familiarity with each other, and to inculcate broad allegiance to a loosely defined American civic creed.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">But an allegiance to even a loosely defined American civic creed can only be the product of a broad consensus about the goodness of America itself, the basic terms of the American project of self-government, and the like.<\/span> Political polarization is dissolving that consensus. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Progressives, who have disproportionate representation in the culture-forming institutions of schools and mass media,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/jabberwocking.com\/if-you-hate-the-culture-wars-blame-liberals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have abandoned the broad cente<\/a><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/jabberwocking.com\/if-you-hate-the-culture-wars-blame-liberals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">r<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>\u00a0for their transformative agenda.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>But what strikes me about the forms of critical pedagogy that are leaking into publication is that they go so far beyond taking a more critical view of the American founding. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The National Education Association, for example, adopted resolutions committing itself to the project of critical race theory and producing a report \u201cthat critiques empire, white supremacy, anti-Blackness, anti-Indigeneity, racism, patriarchy, cisheteropatriarchy, capitalism, ableism, anthropocentrism, and other forms of power and oppression at the intersections of our society.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><strong>If public-school teachers are determined to use their positions to confront \u201ccisheteropatriarchy\u201d and to help people identity \u201cshame\u201d with \u201cwhiteness\u201d \u2014 then it\u2019s probably time to admit that education is an induction into a metaphysical and moral worldview.
