It’s Monday, September 13th, 2021…but before we begin, a brief explanation is in order.\u00a0 First, some of you, our valued readers, may not know writing The Gouge<\/em>\u00a0isn’t our day job, but rather part labor of love, part catharsis and most importantly our personal effort to make a difference in the world by disseminating the truth in what we consider a satirically humorous manor.\u00a0 Like our dear departed Dad, no one find our jokes as funny as we do.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So in addition to trying to put the finishing touches on a residential development project, upon our return fr0k Africa back on August 17th, we immediately began what has become the Afghanistan debacle of home improvement projects.\u00a0 Without boring you with the gory details, first, the electrician working the job turned out to be awaiting an urgently needed liver transplant, so when he here, he was, understandably, not at the top of his game.\u00a0 And when he was fortunate enough to receive a transplant (like Balls Cotton, he’s recovering nicely!) and no longer able to work, we discovered none of the outlets for the appliances were located according to the manufacturer’s specs, the low voltage wires located anywhere and everywhere BUT 54-1\/2″ off the floor, the eleven new cables run to the circuit panel were unidentified and somewhere one particular wire was broken.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So guess who just spent the last week+ playing electrician, relocating all the appliance outlets and installing all the low voltage LED cabinet and under-cabinet lighting?\u00a0 If not for the able assistance for one day of a friend from church identifying the various circuits, wiring the panel and finding the broken wire, we’d STILL be working the problem, people.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Then there’s the cabinets, which the fabricators evidently put together without ever consulting the shop drawings.\u00a0 You know, the schematics which detail helpful things to know…like DIMENSIONS?!?\u00a0 The pantry, which was to be 94″ INCLUDING a 4″ toe kick arrived 94″ WITHOUT the toe kick.\u00a0 The wall cabinets, which were to be 12-3\/4″ deep, were delivered and hung with a 12″ depth.\u00a0 No big deal…other than the fact TLJ’s 11″ plates won’t fit in a 12″ deep inset cabinet.\u00a0 And the blind corner cabinets which were to provide additional storage in an otherwise useless corner weren’t blind, just cabinets.\u00a0 All of which requires 6 of the 14 cabinets to be totally remade…cabinets which were ordered back in mid-February.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Add to that the fact the demo guys scratched the beejeebers out of our teak flooring when they removed the fridge and freezer, the GC cut the 10″ hole for the hood duct in the wrong place, the island wasn’t built deep enough to accommodate the warming drawer and none of the drawer inserts to house the silverware, spices, etc. seem to have been ordered and you’ve got what amounts to one colossal…<\/strong><\/p>\n
