Mark Milley&#8217;s calls to his Chinese counterpart in the final months of the Trump presidency were made &#8220;<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in the interest of protecting the country<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just so we&#8217;re all on the same page, these were the calls in which Milley assured the ChiComs he&#8217;d give them a heads-up in the event The Donald ordered a nuclear attack on the PRC:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;<em>General Li, you and I have known each other for now five years. If we\u2019re going to attack, I\u2019m going to call you ahead of time. It\u2019s not going to be a surprise<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span> &#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">General Benedict Milley, taking his cue from Sun Tzu&#8217;s adage, &#8220;If you&#8217;re going to attack your enemy, forewarn them so as to give them ample time to prepare a crippling preemptive response.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Wow<\/em><\/span>!\u00a0 Milley knew Li for&#8230;FIVE WHOLE YEARS!!!\u00a0 So General Li would have dutifully informed Chairman Xi Jinping, who would have then: (A). Ducked and covered; (B). Launched a preemptive nuclear strike on the United States and her allies; or, (C). (B) then (A).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Think about it: <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">HAD<\/span><\/em> The Donald ordered such an attack (which was about as likely as Bill having marital relations with Hillary the evening she found out about Monica&#8230;or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>any other evening<\/em><\/span> for that matter!) and Milley <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>HAD<\/em><\/span> forewarned his ChiCom counterpart, how <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>DID<\/em><\/span> Milley expect Xi to respond?!?\u00a0 With a hale and hearty&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Dkq7WZTzkLQ?start=71&amp;end=79&amp;\" width=\"420\" height=\"235\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>And what puts Bob Woodward in any special position or provides him some unique knowledge to render judgment on either the motivation behind Milley&#8217;s ChiCom contacts or what constitutes the interests of the United States?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s two shots of the juice.\u00a0 Shot One: General Milley, despite his exalted position of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had two direct reports: His immediate superior, the Secretary of Defense, and his boss&#8217;s boss, the Commander-in-Chief.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Nothing<\/em><\/span>&#8230;we repeat, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>NOTHING<\/em><\/span>&#8230;in his job description, duties, responsibilities or privileges allowed him to deliberately withhold knowledge from the President (see Chief, Commander-in) of his surreptitious contacts with a foreign power, let alone his nation&#8217;s most powerful foe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shot Two: Based on Woodward&#8217;s asinine assessment, Benedict Arnold&#8217;s act of treason was made &#8220;in the interest of protecting the country&#8221;; only in the case of Arnold, the country Arnold was protecting was Great Britain, whereas Milley was acting in the interests of the People&#8217;s Republic of China.\u00a0 Consider also Arnold only offered the British the plans to West Point, while Milley promised to provide America&#8217;s enemy an opportunity to launch a preemptive nuclear strike.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>To which <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>we<\/em><\/span> say, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>shoot &#8217;em all<\/em><\/span> and let <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Satan<\/em><\/span> sort &#8217;em out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, owing to having spent most of the day helping the plumber install our new sink <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>and<\/em><\/span> temporary countertop and keeping TLJ comfortable following her surgery (she&#8217;s recovering nicely, thank you!), here&#8217;s another somewhat abbreviated edition of\u00a0<em>The Gouge<\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First up, <em>NRO<\/em>&#8216;s Kevin Williamson adds up&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-tuesday\/the-presidency-as-foreign-policy-theater\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=TUE_20210921&amp;utm_term=Tuesday-Smart\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\">The High Price of Big Man Mojo<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/download-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96816\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/download-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/download-2.jpeg 341w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/download-2-244x300.jpeg 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>The American retreat from\u00a0Afghanistan, with its <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">whimpering and scurrying and its generally cringing tail-between-the-legs posture<\/span><\/em>, would have been <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>debacle enough<\/em><\/span> without the Biden administration\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>having added<\/em><em> a massacre of children and innocents<\/em><\/span> to it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>The fact that it was a massacre <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>enabled by incompetence<\/em><\/span> does not improve the situation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>General Frank McKenzie, who is in charge at U.S. Central Command, confirmed last week that a drone strike carried out in Kabul in order to ward off an imminent attack from ISIS-K <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>actually<\/em><\/span> killed a carload of civilians, mostly children.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">\u201cI offer my sincere apology,\u201d General McKenzie said.<\/span> Oh, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>at least<\/em><\/span> it\u2019s\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>sincere<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">He affirmed that he is \u201cfully responsible for this strike and this tragic outcome.\u201d<\/span> If General McKenzie <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is<\/em><\/span> fully responsible, then perhaps <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>he<\/em><\/span> \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>or someone above him<\/em><\/span> \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>should act like it<\/em><\/span> and see to it that he is, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>at a minimum<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>fully relieved of his responsibilities<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>But <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>is<\/em><\/span> General McKenzie really fully responsible?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>\u201cThe strike on 29 August must be considered in the context of the situation on the ground,\u201d General McKenzie said, \u201cin Kabul at Hamid Karzai International Airport following the ISIS-K attack that resulted in the deaths of 13 soldiers, sailors, and Marines, and more than 100 civilians, at Abbey Gate on 26 August. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">And also with the substantial body of intelligence indicating the imminence of another attack.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>That<\/em><\/span> is a useful context to consider, because it is not a relevant\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>military<\/em><\/span>\u00a0context at all \u2014 it is a\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>political<\/em><\/span>\u00a0context.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The horrifying attack on August 26 confirmed only the general sense that violent attacks against U.S. forces and those under their protection were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>likely<\/em><\/span>, if not <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>inevitable<\/em><\/span>, during our headlong retreat from Afghanistan.<\/span> It <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>told us<\/em><\/span> what we <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>already knew<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">The events of August 26 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>did\u00a0not<\/em><\/span>\u00a0tell us <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>anything<\/em><\/span> about whether <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>that particular vehicle<\/em><\/span> \u2014 packed with an aid worker and his family \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>was likely to be part of an ISIS-K operation<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The events of August 26 are unlikely to have shed <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>any light<\/em><\/span> on whether the intelligence, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>if we can call it that<\/em><\/span>, preceding that drone strike <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>ought to have been judged credible<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>The events of August 26 are relevant mainly for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>political<\/em><\/span> \u2014 or, we might as well say,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>cosmetic<\/em><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 reasons.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>And it seems to have been the politics that we were responding to.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The collapse of the Afghan government and the surrender of U.S. forces to the Taliban (and we might as well call it what it is) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>already<\/em><\/span> was shaping up to be a fiasco.<\/span> Subcomandante Malarky boasted that the Afghan military had been so well-trained and splendidly provisioned by the U.S. government that its ability to hold off the Taliban was a near certainty.<span style=\"color: #333399;\"> \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>They<\/em><\/span> have an air force,\u201d Joe Biden said of the Kabul government.<\/span> \u201cThe Taliban <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>doesn\u2019t<\/em><\/span>.\u201d <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Someone <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>might have reminded him<\/em><\/span> that the Taliban <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>already<\/em><\/span> conquered Afghanistan <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>once<\/em><\/span> without the benefit of an air force, and that the attack on the United States that precipitated our involvement in Afghanistan was carried out <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>by means of box-cutters and building schematics<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Secretary of State Antony Blinken was even more emphatic: \u201cWe are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not<\/em><\/span> withdrawing. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">We are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>staying<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>embassy<\/em><\/span> is staying. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Our <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>programs<\/em><\/span> are staying.\u201d<\/span> (I know the Blinken type. When one of these bloodless, dead-eyed Ivy League lawyers says he <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>isn\u2019t<\/em><\/span> going to screw you, you\u2019re <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>already<\/em><\/span> screwed. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Blaming them for it is like blaming a wasp for stinging you \u2014 it is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>what they do<\/em><\/span>, their <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>nature<\/em><\/span>.)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><strong>Because Barack Obama had at least the good sense to more or less ignore Joe Biden out of existence for eight years, Osama bin Laden did not live to see his expectations finally come to pass. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">But a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>symbolic retaliation followed by retreat<\/em><\/span> is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>precisely<\/em><\/span> what President Biden ultimately intended to offer, at the end, in Afghanistan. <\/span>After the airport attack \u2014 the deadliest attack on U.S. forces in Afghanistan in a decade \u2014 President Biden was\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>politically<\/em><\/span>\u00a0compelled <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>to do something<\/em><\/span>, lest his Big Man Mojo be seen to wane and the Mandate of Heaven slip from his quavering grasp. <span style=\"color: #333399;\">That compulsion surely was felt all the way down the chain of command.<\/span> And it resulted in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>taking the first opportunity<\/em><em> to make a<\/em> <em>theatrical show of force<\/em><\/span> \u2014 in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>this<\/em><\/span> case, against <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>a car with seven children in it<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Because Congress is run by Democrats, there probably will be no serious oversight effort made to learn how that decision was made and how it went wrong.<\/span> But the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>political dynamics<\/em><\/span> animating the administration are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>plain enough<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"leading-tight pb-4 italic\"><strong>The Left has always excelled at one thing: Paying the debts and obligations they&#8217;ve incurred with other people&#8217;s blood, sweat, toil and assets.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"article-excerpt\"><strong>Since we&#8217;re on the subject of the Big Man, also writing at <em>NRO<\/em>, Zach Evans<i>\u00a0<\/i>reports on the exposure of yet another of his bald-faced lies, as an&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"article-header__title\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/independent-source-confirms-authenticity-of-damning-hunter-biden-emails\/?utm_source=email&amp;utm_medium=breaking&amp;utm_campaign=newstrack&amp;utm_term=25101717\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/hunter-biden-business-partner-confirms-email-showing-joe-was-offered-ten-percent-stake-in-chinese-business-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tony Bobulinski<\/a><\/em><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 Hunter Biden\u2019s former business partner and a recipient on the email \u2014 said referred to Hunter holding a 10 percent stake in the deal for Joe Biden.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>President Biden has insisted that he was never involved in his son\u2019s business dealings<\/strong><\/span><\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yeah,&#8230;and Slick Willy never had sex with that woman&#8230;Ms. Lewinsky.\u00a0 Then again, perhaps 46* feels the fruits of graft and corruption are just as much his due as Clinton did sex from those in his employ.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Next up, again courtesy of <em>NRO<\/em>, Michael Brendan Dougherty sagely warns America&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"article-header__title\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2021\/09\/we-will-regret-masking-kids\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;
