Trevor so insightfully observed, while the language Biden used is unbecoming of anyone, let alone a sitting President*, Doocy&#8217;s question <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>was<\/em><\/span>, nonetheless, stupid.\u00a0 Asking what Biden planned on doing to reduce inflation prior to the midterms would have a fair and balanced question, so in our mind both Biden <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>and<\/em><\/span> Doocy exercised poor judgement.\u00a0 But Doocy is just 34, with frankly less journalistic experience than his position warrants, and Biden is supposed to be the elder statesman, the &#8220;adult in the room&#8221; in contrast to The Donald.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yeah, an adult who takes any question regarding his record as an assault deserving of an angry, personal attack.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, here&#8217;s <em>The Gouge<\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First up,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>a thought-provoking piece from the <em>Washington Times<\/em> in which Michael McKenna poses a legitimate question:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"page-headline\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2022\/jan\/22\/why-are-we-rushing-to-defend-ukraine\/\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #6d7ba6; text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8; text-decoration: underline;\">Why are we rushing to defend Ukraine<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\">?<\/span><\/h1>\n<h3 class=\"page-subheadline\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2022\/jan\/22\/why-are-we-rushing-to-defend-ukraine\/\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">No one has yet explained what American interest is at risk<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><a style=\"color: #607fa8;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/ukraine.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-99484\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/ukraine.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/ukraine.png 420w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/ukraine-300x224.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong>The military-industrial complex and its clients sprinkled throughout both political parties seem to have decided that the next place we need to go and kill people (or at least sell weapons to help others kill people) is\u00a0Ukraine, assuming that\u00a0Russia\u00a0decides to slice off a section of its former province.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Good for them.<\/span> But before the rest of us get involved in yet another war that no one intends to win, it might be worthwhile to consider a few features of the landscape.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">There is no nice way to say this, but the idea of\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0as a nation-state is relatively new.<\/span> In the 350 years since the Eternal Peace Treaty (actual name) was signed in 1686,\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0has been either a vassal state or province of\u00a0Russia.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Ukraine\u00a0has been independent only since 1991, and that independence happened only as a consequence of the United States and its allies winning the Cold War.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong>Like all people living near great powers, the Ukrainians have suffered from the proximity. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Ireland has suffered for 1,000 years in the shadow of England.<\/span> Our own neighbors \u2014 Canada and Mexico \u2014 do not consider living on the same continent with the United States an unmixed blessing.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">However, misfortunes of geographical fate do not mean that we should wander into conflict.<\/span> In the long sweep of American history, no serious person has ever suggested we assist Ireland in gaining or preserving her independence from England. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">There\u2019s a good reason for that.<\/span> We\u2019re Americans \u2014 not Irish and certainly not Ukrainians. Our own problems are sufficient to themselves.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Nevertheless, folks ranging from President Biden to Rep. Dan Crenshaw, Texas Republican, have made it clear (well, sort of clear in the case of Mr. Biden) that they intend to view any crossing of the Ukrainian border as an act against the United States.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong>That is especially odd given that Mr. Biden and his party \u2014 and a pretty sizable chunk of the pre-Trump Republican Party \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>have been content to watch the slow-motion invasion of our own southern border for most of the last 50 years<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Last year, for example, about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>10 divisions<\/em><\/span> crossed the border each month.<\/span> We did <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>nothing<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>I guess there\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>no money for the weapons crowd<\/em><\/span> in protecting our own border.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong>The fixation on\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0is also odd because we are under no legal or moral obligations to protect\u00a0Ukraine, nor do we have any treaty obligations to\u00a0Ukraine. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">No one has explained what American interest is at risk in\u00a0Ukraine, nor has anyone explained why American lives or property should be put at risk in the event of a Russian invasion into one of its former provinces.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong>Mr. Biden has not even done us the courtesy of pretending to seek congressional approval for whatever he might have in mind.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">There are a handful of border disputes underway on this planet at any given moment.<\/span> There is a 100-year-old border dispute in Ireland. There are border disputes in Sudan, India, Gibraltar, etc. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">There is a border dispute on our southern border where pretty much everyone on the planet believes they have the right to enter our country at will.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong>There is an increasingly ominous border dispute between the Republic of Taiwan and Communist China. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">That one, and the one on our southern border, are most material to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>specific American interests<\/em><\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>specific American legal and moral obligations<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong>It is not clear why this border dispute in a corner of Eastern Europe is worthy of our attention. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">As the great German prime minister Otto von Bismarck once noted: \u201cThe entire Balkans are not worth the bones of one Pomeranian grenadier.\u201d<\/span> Nor are they worth the bones of a single United States soldier or Marine.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Russia\u00a0is not a material threat to the United States.<\/span> With a GDP of less than $2 trillion,\u00a0Russia\u2019s economy is smaller than Canada\u2019s. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">It is a country with deteriorating economics and demographics.<\/span> The real and existential threat we face is from the Communist Chinese Party.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Russia, and by extension\u00a0Ukraine, is a sideshow.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #607fa8;\"><strong>Finally, we\u2019ve just lost the longest and most pointless war in the history of our nation. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Now is not the time for more foreign and military adventurism and yet another pointless war.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Though we strongly disagree with McKenna&#8217;s characterization of the U.S. presence in Afghanistan as a pointless war, and don&#8217;t find the relative situations of Ireland and Ukraine even remotely comparable, he makes some valid points.\u00a0 But what neither he, nor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XXA_qq8-6ow\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em>Tucker Carlson<\/em><\/span><\/a>, another adamant opponent of U.S. assistance to Ukraine, mentions is why on earth isn&#8217;t the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>U.N<\/em><\/span>. stepping in to halt Russian aggression against one of its members?!?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As long as we&#8217;re on the subject of the Useless Nations, in what a\u00a0<em>New York Sun<\/em> headline forwarded by George Lawlor describes as <em>A Staggering Act of Appeasement<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysun.com\/editorials\/a-staggering-act-of-appeasement\/91963\/\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em>the Biden clown car arranged for South Korea to pay Iran&#8217;s back dues, restoring the Mad Mullah&#8217;s voting right<\/em><\/span><\/a> at a time Winken, Blinken and Nodding Off are desperate to bring Iran back to the table so they can pretend to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/62orq8.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-99542\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/62orq8.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/62orq8.jpeg 420w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/62orq8-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Had Trump attempted such subterfuge, he&#8217;d have been <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>impeached<\/em><\/span>&#8230;a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>third<\/em><\/span> time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In a related item, the\u00a0<em>Morning Jolt<\/em>\u00a0takes a&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.democracyinaction.us\/2020\/biden\/bidenpolicy071119foreignpolicy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Look back to Joe Biden\u2019s foreign-policy address in July 2019<\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/original.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-99543\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/original.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/original.png 420w, https:\/\/www.thedailygouge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/original-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em>We are facing enemies \u2014 both without and within \u2014 hoping to exploit the fissures in our society, undermine our democracy, break up our alliances, and return us to an international system where might determines right.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em>The answer to this threat is more openness \u2014 not less. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">More friendships, more cooperation, more alliances.<\/span> More democracy.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em>Vladimir Putin wants to tell himself and anyone he can dupe into believing him that the liberal idea is \u201cobsolete\u201d \u2014 because he\u2019s afraid of its power.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em>No army on earth can match \u2014 how the Electric Idea of Liberty \u2014 passes freely from person to person, jumps borders, transcends languages and cultures \u2014 how it can supercharge communities of ordinary citizens into activists and organizers and change agents.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em>We must once more harness that power and rally the Free World to meet the challenges facing our world today. <span style=\"color: #800080;\">And it falls to the United States of America to lead the way.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em>No other nation has the capacity. <span style=\"color: #800080;\">No other nation is built on that idea \u2013 that promise.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em>And it\u2019s in our self-interest.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">We have to champion liberty and democracy.<\/span> We have to reclaim our credibility.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">In retrospect, Biden\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>campaign-trail vision<\/em><\/span> for U.S. foreign policy amounted to a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>whole bunch of pretty words that didn\u2019t mean much<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Once in office<\/em><\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/is-the-saudi-crown-prince-exacting-revenge-on-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden flinched on punishing Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #800080;\">He gave up on blocking the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/joe-biden-wimps-out-on-russias-nord-stream-2-pipeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nord Stream 2 pipeline<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span>, which strengthened Putin\u2019s leverage over Europe.<\/span> When push comes to shove with Xi Jinping, the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/the-functionally-pro-china-biden-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\">Biden administration backs down in the name of \u201cstability<\/span><\/em><\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800080;\">And the administration keeps letting the Iranians\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/irans-giant-middle-finger-to-the-biden-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metaphorically urinate on U.S. shoes while it\u2019s inviting them to further negotiations about their nuclear program<\/a><\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>And of course, we <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>saw<\/em><\/span> how Afghanistan turned out. <span style=\"color: #800080;\">After ISIS killed 13 American servicemen, Biden stood before the country and pledged, \u201cTo those who carried out this attack, as well as anyone who wishes America harm, know this \u2014 we will not forgive.<\/span> We will not forget. <span style=\"color: #800080;\">We will hunt you down and make you pay.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>ISIS <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>has yet<\/em><\/span> to pay <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>any<\/em><\/span> price. <span style=\"color: #800080;\">Those were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>just words<\/em><\/span> on a teleprompter; they didn\u2019t really <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>mean anything<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>And Vladimir Putin <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>was watching<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Last week, the good folks at the\u00a0<em>Daily Mail\u00a0<\/em>asked me what I thought of Biden\u2019s mental acuity after his lengthy press conference.<\/span> In short, \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10424393\/Bidens-mental-decline-disastrous-consequences-world-writes-JIM-GERAGHTY.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At least Biden didn\u2019t blurt out the nuclear launch codes<\/a><\/em><\/span>.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A small boon for which we guess we should be grateful.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Moving on, writing at the <em>Brownstone Institute<\/em> via <em>The Epoch Times<\/em>, Harvey Risch, Jayanta Bhattacharya and Paul Elias Alexander<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>offer their <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>expert<\/em><\/span> opinions as to why&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brownstone.org\/articles\/the-emergency-must-be-ended-now\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900; text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\">The Emergency Must Be Ended, Now<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>We don\u2019t mean that the virus is gone\u2014Omicron is still spreading wildly, and the virus may circulate forever. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But with a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>normal focus on protecting the vulnerable<\/em><\/span>, we can treat the virus as a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>medical<\/em><\/span> rather than a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>social<\/em><\/span> matter <span style=\"color: #008000;\">(<em>or, perhaps more accurately, a political matter<\/em>)<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>manage it in ordinary ways<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>A declared emergency needs <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>continuous justification<\/em><\/span>, and that\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>now lacking<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Over the last six weeks in the United States, the Delta variant strain\u2014the most recent aggressive version of the infection\u2014has according to the CDC been declining in both the proportion of infections (60 percent on Dec. 18 to 0.5 percent on Jan. 15) and the number of daily infected people (95,000 to 2,100).\u00a0<\/span>During the next two weeks, Delta will decline to the point that it <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">essentially disappears<\/span><\/em> like the strains before it.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Omicron is mild enough that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>most people<\/em><\/span>, even many <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>high-risk<\/em><\/span> people, can adequately cope with the infection.<\/span>\u00a0Omicron infection is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>no more severe<\/em><\/span> than seasonal flu, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>generally less so<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A large portion of the vulnerable population in the developed world is already vaccinated and protected against severe disease.<\/span> We have learned much about the utility of inexpensive supplements like Vitamin D to reduce disease risk, and there\u2019s a host of good therapeutics available to prevent hospitalization and death should a vulnerable patient become infected.<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And for younger people, the risk of severe disease\u2014<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>already low before Omicron<\/em><\/span>\u2014is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>minuscule<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Even in places with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>strict lockdown measures<\/em><\/span>, there are hundreds of thousands of newly registered Omicron cases daily and countless unregistered positives from home testing. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Measures like mandatory masking and distancing have had <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>negligible or at most small effects on transmission<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> Large-scale population quarantines <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>only delay the inevitable<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vaccination and boosters have not halted Omicron disease spread; heavily vaccinated nations like Israel and Australia have more daily cases per capita than any place on earth at the moment.<\/span> This wave will run its course <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>despite<\/em><\/span> all of the emergency measures.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Until Omicron, recovery from COVID provided substantial protection against subsequent infection.<\/span> While the Omicron variant can reinfect patients recovered from infection by previous strains, such reinfection tends to produce <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>mild disease<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Future variants, whether evolved from Omicron or not, are unlikely to evade the immunity provided by Omicron infection for a long while.<\/span> With the universal spread of Omicron worldwide, new strains will likely have more difficulty finding a hospitable environment because of the protection provided to the population by Omicron\u2019s widespread natural immunity.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">It\u2019s true that\u2014despite emergency measures\u2014hospitalization counts and COVID-associated mortality have risen.<\/span> Since mortality tends to trail symptomatic infection by about 3\u20134 weeks, we\u2019re still seeing the Delta strain\u2019s remaining effects and the waning of vaccine immunity against serious outcomes at 6\u20138 months after vaccination.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">These cases should decline over time as Delta finally says goodbye.<\/span> It\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>too late<\/em><\/span> to alter their course with lockdowns (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>if<\/em><\/span> that were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>ever<\/em><\/span> possible).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Given that Omicron, with its mild infection, is running its course to the end, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>there\u2019s no justification for maintaining emergency status<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The lockdowns, personnel firings, and shortages and school disruptions <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">have done at least as much damage to the population\u2019s health and welfare as the virus<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The state of emergency <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>isn\u2019t justified now<\/em><\/span>, and it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>can\u2019t be justified by fears of a hypothetical recurrence<\/em><\/span> of some more severe infection <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>at some unknown point in the future<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> If such a severe new variant <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>were<\/em><\/span> to occur\u2014and it seems unlikely from Omicron\u2014then <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>that<\/em><\/span> would be the time to discuss a declaration of emergency.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Americans have sacrificed enough of their human rights and of their livelihoods for two years in the service of protecting the general public health.<\/span> Omicron is circulating but it\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>not<\/em><\/span> an emergency. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The emergency is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>over<\/em><\/span>.<\/span> The current emergency declaration <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>must be canceled<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">It\u2019s time.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s worth noting the credentials of the three authors which appear at the end of the article
