It’s Monday, June 25th, 2018…but before we begin, we’re compelled to comment on this little dust-up:

Sarah Sanders booted so restaurant could uphold ‘certain standards,’ co-owner says: report

First of all, one must consider the source, particularly when the source in question runs a restaurant in an incredibly Leftist enclave, and has been known to protest sporting a pink pussy hat.

That being said, Stephanie Wilkinson is simply the inevitable product of decades of Progressive political-correctness, as exemplified by this Tracey Ullman spoof, courtesy of our the younger of our three sons, Travis and Michael:

This snippet from her WaPo interview is particularly telling:

“…Wilkinson told The Washington Post that her staff had called her to report Sanders was in the restaurant. She cited several reasons, including the concerns of several restaurant employees who were gay and knew Sanders had defended Trump’s desire to bar transgender people from the military.

Tell me what you want me to do. I can ask her to leave,” Wilkinson told her staff, she said. “They said yes.”

We can just picture Chuck Koskinos calling Tommy Jacomo at home to report some Republican luminary had frequented the Washington Palm.  Tommy would have first asked Chuck how much Ouzo he’d had, then told him to make certain to sell them on either the Silver Oak or the Lakoyaafter which he’d advised him to either do his job or find alternative employment.

Forgetting for the moment this embarrassing episode is representative of an astonishing lack of civility and outright disdain for legitimate opposing opinions exhibited almost exclusively by The Left, inquiring minds are left wondering how does the presence of the White House spokeswoman serving a President who recognizes the adverse impact of transgenders to the cohesiveness and combat effectiveness of U.S. Military units present any kind of threat to gay restaurant employees?!?

Sorry, but if Progressive politics have moved into the gutter…

…the likes of Lexington, VA and Stephanie Wilkinson are fast approaching the outfall.  Meanwhile, given the local politics, it’s our opinion this entire episode is nothing more than a sordid publicity stunt.

Now, here’s The Gouge!

First up, since we’re on the subject of Progressive hypocrisy and double-standards, Juan Williams demonstrates why we no longer watch FOX News:

With the exception of Bret Baier…and the possible exception of Laura Ingraham…FOX is all about maximizing ratings at the cost of reasoned debate.  We for one will no longer be party to promoting their percentage of viewership…period!

By the way, for the record, we don’t find the separation of children from parents…or NON-parents…attempting to enter the United States illegally at all abhorrent.  But that’s just us!

In a related item, Townhall.com‘s Matt Vespa trumpets another conveniently unreported truth:

Hey, Liberal Media, Canada Also Detains Migrant Children And Separates Them From Their Parents. Are They Nazis Too?

“…It’s becoming increasingly clear that Democrats care more about illegal aliens than Americans, but that’s for another time. My question is when will the Left go after Canada? They detain migrant children. They’ve separated them from their parents. And in some cases, they’ve detained these for months at a time. My God—most of North America is Hitler, or something (via CBC News):

Canada has also detained migrant children — and in some cases, has restricted access to their asylum-seeking parents — despite its stated policy to do whatever possible to avoid it. Last year, 151 minors were detained with their parents in Canadian immigration holding centres.

Eleven others were held in custody unaccompanied by an adult, according to the Canada Border Services Agency. The CBSA would not speculate on the circumstances surrounding why a minor was unaccompanied.

The Canadian holding centres, which are off limits to the public, resemble medium-security prisons. They are surrounded by razor-wire fences and kept under surveillance by guards. There are three such facilities across Canada, in Vancouver, Toronto, and Laval, Que. In some provinces, asylum seekers are detained in prisons.

A recent McGill University study found that detention can be a “frightening experience” for children, leaving them with “psychiatric and academic difficulties long after detention.” (As opposed to life back in Central America.Inside, boredom is “pervasive,” as children are often left “idle, sleeping or lying on the couches for long periods during the day.” (In contrast to all the fun they were having back home or trekking across most of Central America!)

The minors detained last year spent an average of 13 days in custody, but the time period can vary significantly. The study recounts how, in one instance, a six-year-old girl detained for more than six months asked her parents, “Are they gonna keep us here permanently?” (To which the parents should have replied, “Shut up, or they might send us back to El Salvador!”)

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tried to claim the high ground criticizing Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda, saying, “This is not how we do things in Canada.” Yeah—you do, bro, so…”

Progressives: they lie but once…at that continuously!

With all due respect to the efforts of those committed to defending America’s sovereignty and border security, what measures are in place to prevent…

…this same event (minus the subtitles) from reoccurring on our southern border?  If Dimocrats have their way, NOT A D*MN THING!!!

My Lazy Summer as a Public Employee

Baltimore’s utility workers are in hot water for loafing on the clock. That brings back a few memories.

Each morning after we’d punched in and donned our uniforms, a half-dozen of us summer hires—mostly college kids like me who had gotten the job via our parents’ connections—would pile into a utility van. Waiting behind the wheel was a genial old-timer named Hank, who drove us to the assigned neighborhood, where we would walk house-to-house recording the meter readings. Once we finished our routes, Hank told us that first morning, the rest of the day was ours. Typically, it took only about two hours.

The upshot was that we spent most of the summer devising creative ways to kill entire afternoons, and not a few late mornings. We’d read, nap, hit the beach, shoot hoops, catch a movie, play video games and engage in various other activities that I’m almost certain fell outside the job description for a water-meter reader. After we’d decided on a plan, Hank would drop us off and disappear until it was time to return the van to the dispatcher and punch out for the day. My recollection is that no one on my crew ever asked questions or feared getting caught. And the summer workers on other crews, we eventually learned, were up to the same antics.

When I told my father what was going on, he just laughed and recounted the old joke about why government employees don’t look out the window in the morning. (So they’ll have something to do in the afternoon.) For a summer, it felt like I was living the punch line. The real joke, though, is on the local taxpayers, who fund all the featherbedding. And that joke never gets old.

Last week, Baltimore’s inspector general revealed that over a 20-month period, city meter readers earned $120,000 while loafing on the clock. “For over a year, Baltimore’s water meter readers would get a list of jobs at the beginning of their shifts,” the Baltimore Sun reported. “When they were done, workers either drove around aimlessly or went home instead of getting more work to do.” Investigators used GPS records from work vehicles to catch the errant employees, but their behavior was an open secret among supervisors. As the Sun explained: “Investigators learned that Department of Public Works, which employed the meter readers, had an unofficial policy condoning the practice.”

Yes, $120,000 is chump change in a city the size of Baltimore, which passed a $2.8 billion budget earlier this month. But you’d be a fool to think that meter readers in Baltimore are the only public employees gaming the system

In government, where there is no profit motive and agencies tend to be monopolies, a bloated workforce can help politicians win votes and placate special-interest groups, such as labor unions. Whether hiring more people makes sense economically is often an afterthought for a mayor or governor. Private employers, held accountable by shareholders and the need to remain competitive, don’t have the same luxury. Cities like Baltimore and New York continue to spend more money to hire more workers to perform more tasks, even though neither city is experiencing explosive population growth.

If Target operated this way, rivals would eat its lunch. Yet city officials in Baltimore can simply apologize, promise to do better, and then move on. Even the meter readers probably won’t face serious consequences. Prosecutors had considered bringing charges but eventually decided not to, the Sun reported, “because the workers appeared to have the approval of the department.” Ah, the memories.

Turning to a related item forwarded by long-time reader/first-time contributor Bill Kreisl, who informs us of the facts of the Fitzgerald collision which cost the lives of seven U.S. sailors:

Pentagon Covering Up Fact That Female Officers Nearly Sank Navy Ship

During the early weeks after the USS Fitzgerald was speared by a lumbering Philippine container ship, it was noteworthy that the captain and a couple of admirals were publicly named, but not the actual officer in charge, the officer of the deck. (OOD) The other person who should have kept the Fitz out of trouble is the person in charge of the combat information center, the Tactical Action Officer. That individual is supposed to be monitoring the combat radar, which can detect a swimmer at a distance of two miles.

Not until a year later, when the final reports are made public and the guilty parties have been court-martialed, does the truth come out. The OOD was named Sarah, and the Tactical Action Officer was named Natalie, and they weren’t speaking to each other!!! The Tactical Action Officer would normally be in near constant communication with the OOD, but there is no record of any communication between them that entire shift!

  • Another fun fact: In the Navy that won WWII, the damage control officers were usually some of the biggest and strongest men aboard, able to close hatches, shore up damaged areas with timbers, etc. The Fitz’s damage control officer was also a woman, and she never left the bridge. She handled the aftermath of the accident remotely, without lifting a finger herself!

Look it up: The OOD was Sarah Coppock, Tactical Action Officer was Natalie Combs

When I noticed last year that they were doing all they could to keep the OOD’s name out of the headlines, I speculated to my son that it was a she. Turns out all the key people (except one officer in the CIC) were female!

Indeed, I did some searching, and Lt. Coppock pleaded guilty to dereliction of duty. Lt. Combs faced a hearing last month:

In an 11-hour hearing, prosecutors painted a picture of Lt. Irian Woodley, the ship’s surface warfare coordinator, and Lt. Natalie Combs, the tactical action officer, as failing at their jobs, not using the tools at their disposal properly and not communicating adequately. They became complacent with faulty equipment and did not seek to get it fixed, and they failed to communicate with the bridge, the prosecution argued. Had they done those things, the government contended, they would have been able to avert the collision.

That two of the officers — Coppock and Combs — involved in this fatal incident were female suggests that discipline and training standards have been lowered for the sake of  gender integrationwhich was a major policy push at the Pentagon during the Obama administration. It could be that senior officers, knowing their promotions may hinge on enthusiastic support for “gender integration,” are reluctant to enforce standards for the women under their command.

This was the story of Kara Hultgreen, the Navy pilot who died in a 1994 F-14 crash (Due solely, politically-correct attempts to place the blame elsewhere, to her inadequate aviation skills). Investigation showed that Hultgreen had been allowed to proceed in her training after errors that would have meant a washout for any male pilot. But the Clinton administration was pushing for female fighter pilots, which resulted in a competition between the Navy and Air Force to put women into these combat roles. (We witnessed the same process in the approval of Black fighter crews back in the early ’80’s; and yes, we will testify to the truth of our recollections under oath!!!) It is not necessary to believe that (a) women shouldn’t be fighter pilots, in order to believe (b) lowering standards for the sake of quotas is a bad idea. Of course, you may believe both (a) and (b), but it is (b) that gets people killed.

It seems obvious that the Pentagon (and the liberal media) sought to suppress full knowledge of what happened to the Fitzgerald in the immediate aftermath of the June 2017 incident that killed seven sailors, in the same way the details of Kara Hultgreen’s death were suppressed. (Though anyone who actually flew the F-14A knew what happened at a glance!)It took investigative reporters like Rowan Scarborough of the Washington Times a lot of hard work to find out what actually happened to Hultgreen. Let’s hope other reporters will dig into what’s happening in our military with the “gender intergration” agenda at the Pentagon now.
