…Biden did not offer a detailed description of being shot at. But he was forced to walk back a similar claim in 2007 as veterans warned him not to exaggerate. Biden said during a CNN-hosted Democratic presidential debate in 2007 that he was “shot at” inside Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone.
He later revised the claim, saying that in fact, “I was near where a shot landed.”…”

We lead off the week with a follow-up to Lee Smith’s incredible The Thirty Tyrants commentary featured in the February 5th edition of The Gouge, as, courtesy of James Nichols, Time helpfully provides…
“To the President, something felt amiss. “It was all very, very strange,” Trump said on Dec. 2. “Within days after the election, we witnessed an orchestrated effort to anoint the winner, even while many key states were still being counted.”
In a way, Trump was right.
There was a conspiracy unfolding behind the scenes, one that both curtailed the protests and coordinated the resistance from CEOs. Both surprises were the result of an informal alliance between left-wing activists and business titans. The pact was formalized in a terse, little-noticed joint statement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and AFL-CIO published on Election Day. Both sides would come to see it as a sort of implicit bargain–inspired by the summer’s massive, sometimes destructive racial-justice protests–in which the forces of labor came together with the forces of capital to keep the peace and oppose Trump’s assault on democracy.
The handshake between business and labor was just one component of a vast, cross-partisan campaign to protect the election–an extraordinary shadow effort dedicated not to winning the vote but to ensuring it would be free and fair, credible and uncorrupted. For more than a year, a loosely organized coalition of operatives scrambled to shore up America’s institutions as they came under simultaneous attack from a remorseless pandemic and an autocratically inclined President. Though much of this activity took place on the left, it was separate from the Biden campaign and crossed ideological lines, with crucial contributions by nonpartisan and conservative actors. The scenario the shadow campaigners were desperate to stop was not a Trump victory. It was an election so calamitous that no result could be discerned at all, a failure of the central act of democratic self-governance that has been a hallmark of America since its founding.
Their work touched every aspect of the election. They got states to change voting systems and laws (in many if not all instances, illegally change them!) and helped secure hundreds of millions in public and private funding. They fended off voter-suppression lawsuits, recruited armies of poll workers and got millions of people to vote by mail for the first time. They successfully pressured social media companies to take a harder line against disinformation(such as news of Hunter Biden’s laptop!) and used data-driven strategies to fight viral smears.
…This is the inside story of the conspiracy to save the 2020 election, based on access to the group’s inner workings, never-before-seen documents and interviews with dozens of those involved from across the political spectrum. It is the story of an unprecedented, creative and determined campaign whose success also reveals how close the nation came to disaster. “Every attempt to interfere with the proper outcome of the election was defeated,” says Ian Bassin, co-founder of Protect Democracy, a nonpartisan rule-of-law advocacy group. “But it’s massively important for the country to understand that it didn’t happen accidentally. Four brief thoughts immediately come to mind:
(1). to borrow a phrase from Cordell Hull, in all our nearly 10 years of Conservative blogging, we’ve never seen an article more crowded with infamous falsehoods and distortions – on a scale so huge we never imagined until today that any publication on this planet was capable of uttering them.”
(2). Thus does life once again imitate art, as demonstrated by this clip from The Big Short in which a mystified Mark Baum expresses incredulity after two mortgage brokers readily admitted to processing loans for borrowers they knew to be unqualified:
(3). Is it any wonder rank-and-file Republican support for corporations has plummeted?!?
(4). Reinforcing, as this does, our existing unyielding belief the 2020 election was stolen by massive ballot fraud, we say…
Assuming Manchin’s defection doesn’t induce the Dimocrats to draw Collins, Murkowski or Romney completely over to the Dark Side, whatever inducements Manchin receives will be well worth it.
And in today’s installment of the National Security segment, as American Military News tells us…
“…According to a CBP press release, agents encountered five women and six men from Iran traveling in a group on a bridge near San Luis, Ariz., around 6 p.m. After determining the group had crossed the international border unlawfully, U.S. border patrol agents transported them to Yuma Station for processing.
Iran is considered a “special interest” country due to its relationship with terrorism, but CBP did not suggest anyone in the group was linked to terrorist activity.
…“The primary mission of the Border Patrol is to prevent nefarious people and devices from entering the United States. Iran is a designated Special Interest Country and the agents of Yuma Sector work diligently to protect our borders for the safety of our nation,” the statement said. “Border security is national security.”
Earlier this year, President Joe Biden signed an Executive Order that terminated former-President Trump’s national emergency declaration of the United States’ southern border and canceled border wall funding, calling the project “not a serious policy solution.”
In the order, Biden said that while the United States has the right and duty to secure its borders and protect Americans from threats, a “massive wall that spans the entire southern border” is a “waste of money that diverts attention from genuine threats to our homeland security.”…”
“To be clear, these actions do not mean that the U.S. border is open. While we are committed to expanding legal pathways for protection and opportunity here and in the region, the United States is a country with borders and laws that must be enforced.“
Just not by any arm of 46*’s Administration. Which begs the question why Groper Joe isn’t under threat of impeachment now for demonstrably violating his oath of office, which as we recall, includes the solemn vow…
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.“
Said Constitution to include the Faithful Execution Clause, which states the President must “take care that the laws be faithfully executed.” Which, last time we looked, includes current laws criminalizing illegal immigration and entry into the United States. Just sayin’.
